Students Demand Acknowledgement of
Robert E. Lee´s ´Racist and Dishonorable Conduct´

A group of seven multiracial Washington and Lee University (W&L) students are demanding the school remove all Confederate flags from campus and "acknowledge" General Robert E. Lee´s "dishonorable side." According to the Roanoke Times, "seven multiracial students, calling themselves ´The Committee,´" have also demanded the school "acknowledge and apologize for participating in chattel slavery." They want recognition of "Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the undergraduate campus" and an end to "neo-Confederates" marching across campus "to the Lee Chapel on Lee-Jackson Day." The students say they will "engage in civil disobedience" if their demands are not met by September 1st. They added: "The

My distant relative, Gen. Robert E. Lee, whose family estate is now Arlington National Cemetery, voluntarily freed all of his slaves well before Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. These students are allergic to learning history, and want to impose their ignorance on others. A pox on them. As noted, Lee was the founder of W&L.

Although he chose loyalty to Virginia over loyalty to the United States at the beginning of Civil War hostilities, Gen. Lee, an honorable and principled gentleman as well as one of the greatest battlefield commanders in our history, was unquestionably one of the greatest of Americans.

If you live or work in the northern Virginia area, every so often local talk radio will discuss one of these burning topics. A few months ago it was a proposal renaming Jefferson Davis Hwy (US1) to someone or something else. One caller to a radio show said he and his wife moved to VA from PA a few years ago and felt as if the Civil War had not ended what with all the street names, etc. in honor of Confederate Generals, etc. I think what surprises so many Yankees (A Yankee by birth but a Virginian by choice) is that even though the South lost, many here still remember and revere their history. For example - I´ll bet the majority of students at Bowdoin College in Maine don´t even know who Joshua Chamberlain was beside once the school´s president.

I grew up with a few Lees in the East, who were also related to R.E.Lee and to a person, they were all Honorable and Respected members of the community. As another has said, this is a questionable use of educational resources by these students. One thing a person should learn is how to effectively use those resources to educate themselves. Another thing that should be obvious here is the realization that threats of civil disobedience are seldom effective in this process. Especially at W&L.

The threat may be seen by these students as a way to emphasize their demands but in reality will be seen by the outside world as juvenile demands like ice cream for breakfast. Or an entreaty to "Save your Confederate Money Folks, The South is going to rise again!", or some such nonsense.

As long as college administrations take this stuff seriously and knuckle under to it, it will NEVER stop. The average adolescent mind would rather have some excitement than study. These students should be learning something about R.E. Lee and the U.S. Civil War. not wasting their time on nonsense like this.

But the students are not to blame. They don´t know any better. Those to blame are administrators and faculty, grownups who DO or should know better, but who time after time, on campus after campus, and regarding issue after issue have responded to foolishness like this by taking it seriously and rewarding it.

It is a betrayal of the basic trust Americans place in their educators for universities to encourage or even to tolerate juvenilia that obstructs learning. Students attend university not to instruct adults but to be instructed themselves.

May I respectfully suggest that they transfer to Bowdoin College? They should get out of W&L as soon as possible. Their transcripts will betray them.
They need the help of Al less-than-Sharp to find them a good anti-slavery school.
Pity they knew no history when they applied.
Perhaps a University in Qatar would be appropriate.

The Civil War is l-o-n-g over. Lee was a traitor (see US Constitution Article 3, Section 3) in that he levied: *War against [the United States], or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.* He should have been tried for treason and summarily hanged. It´s time we all faced up to our true history. To hold slaves is to believe that one group of people is so inferior to another that it can be denied life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Well I sure do not believe in slavery, but there was a time when most of the folks in the world did. And some of the folks still do. Just visit parts of Africa. As to hanging Lee I believe, having read some history that Lincoln thought that we should put the country back together quickly and forgive those that fought for the grey as long as they fought under the existing rules of war. Shame he did not live to bring the country back together – a horrendous loss. Times were different then and judgment should be based on what thoughts and rules existed at that time.
As an aside I have a letter written by a relative that was recovering from wounds , his uniform was blue, and he talks of Lincoln’s assignation. Oh and as to the 20th Maine – Chamberlain agreed with Lincoln.

"In all my perplexities and distresses, the Bible has never failed to give me light and strength."
General Robert Edward Lee
(1807-1870)

One of the best books ever written about General Robert E. Lee, in my opinion, is Charles Bracelen Flood´s "LEE: The Last Years," published in 1981. It covers the years 1865 to 1870, when General Lee, a former Superintendent of The United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, served as President of Washington College. (Renamed Washington & Lee University after his death).

Professor Flood´s conclusion---"Robert E. Lee, one of the most famous figures in American history, vanishes after his dramatic surrender at Appomattox. In fact, he lived only another five years, during which time he did more than any other American to heal the wounds between North and South during the tempestuous postwar period."

W&L probably didn´t admit women at first either. Another thing to grovel about. Why isn´t Harvard blamed for that?

And those northern states also signed the Constitution which permitted slavery. No none of them are any good either.

Notwithstanding #3´s statement that Lee freed his slaves prior to the Emancipation Proclamation, he owned 63 of them that he inherited from his Father in Law. The idea of the inheritence set by his father in law was that he would free them upon receiving ownership. He reneged on the deal and did not free them. He also had one beaten for trying to escape. like many southerners at the time he believed that the benefits of slavery outweighed the negatives and that blacks were better off being slaves in the US rather than being back in Africa. He also that God did not object to slavery. The following reflects his take on slavery from a letter based on testimony of one of his slaves.

http://fair-use.org/wesley-norris/testimony-of-wesley-norris

In any case, even if he did not personally believe in slavery, he would be complicit by fighting to continue the practice. There is no doubt he was a brilliant general, but he was not the kind elder statesman that he is frequently portrayed as. He was a traitor and deserved to be treated as such. To me displaying the Confederate flag is akin to Germans displaying the Nazi flag.

The link provided by #27 is not testimony; it is an uncorroborated letter published in an anti-slavery tract some seven years after the alleged fact. Thusly does ahistorical rumor and truthiness insinuate its venom into the historical record. It´s still going on today. Lee´s son Custis quotes his father in Reading the Man: A Portrait of Robert E. Lee: "There is not a word of truth in it.... No servant, soldier, or citizen that was ever employed by me can with truth charge me with bad treatment."

Because I didn´t live one hundred fifty years ago, I don´t claim to know all of what motivated secessionists of that time. (Slavery was only one of many issues.) There are probably infinitely more good reasons for secession today.

It´s like no good deed goes unpunished. The school allowed them in and is probably paying their tuition. As long as the school goes on appeasing them, they will never be satisfied, and will eventually be demanding that all remnants of the old Confederate South be removed and destroyed.

If Obama and the liberal Democrats thought they could get a few votes out of that, you can bet that they would be passing laws taking the names of anyone connected to the Confederacy off the names of places throughout the South and making all confederate memorials illegal.

To tell you the truth, I am getting very tired of many minorities and their liberal defenders, seeking offense at everything in the past as a reason to render all southern society as racist and seek to destroy every personality who was southern. Give us southerners a break, and look at your own history, KKK was founded and supported by DEMOCRATS. The civil rights laws were passed against the Democrats´ wishes by REPUBLICANS. These poor dumb clucks and their "Committee" could better spend their time trying to become persons of character after the example set by Robert E. Lee. He was a great and honorable man, something the "Committee" very clearly and obviously knows nothing about. Should they have the basic intelligence to study the life of Lee, they would see a man of great honor, clearly unlike themselves. Not a man like these twerps. They are a sad excuse for students at Washington & Lee.

Wow! This is one of the best threads I´ve read in a long, long time.

I had to laugh when I read the note about how things were in the ´60´s and ´70´s - there were a lot of people who were pretty serious about what the Mason Dixon Line meant back then. One was my aunt who swore she´d never been north of the Mason Dixon Line. I remember looking at her like she was some kind of freak! My Dad (her brother) had no such attitudes towards anyone.

Two things to remember: (1) we are talking about young people in the age group of anywhere from 17 to 25 - prime for all sorts of over the top feelings. History should be taught with an eye towards understanding, not re-igniting very old wounds.

(2) Yes, the Civil War is over. It was an atrocious war, killed some 600,000 people from both sides and all colors. There were heroes and scoundrels. Lee´s penance was his beautiful home and farm becoming what is now Arlington cemetery. As Lincoln said when he said to bury them on Lee´s land: he will have to see those graves til the end of his days.

The civil war took such a toll on the country and still, clearly, upsets people. Lincoln chose, wisely, not to continue the war by bringing any charges on Lee and others. The war, in essence, would have continued for another four years if that had happened. He was wise in that there was a lot to forgive on both sides, and that was the legacy he left.

The war ended but I want to remind everybody that what we witnessed in Nevada is how the war started. Also, the Lees, Custis and Washingtons are all buried in the same crypt in Lexington, Virginia outside W&L University. Lee´s horse, Traveler, is buried outside the crypt. If these idiots don´t like the place, they should transfer to another school. Lee was an honorable man. The south is full of places where him and Stonewall Jackson (whose house is also in Lexington) are remembered. How many "shrines" you have in Yankeeland to remember Grant and Sherman - the butcher of the north? Just asking.

Robert E. Lee died within his era. His conduct, for good or ill, has ended. Little can be gained from apologies for him by people in this era. History is there for our learning. Our present conduct toward each other is what matters.

"What the world needs now" is an acknowledgment of the present dishonorable conduct that is tearing our nation and world apart right now, and a day of reckoning for that dishonorable conduct. If not, we all may get the taste of what it means to be slaves in our era, and future generations would certainly deserve an apology from us for that.

Lest we forget, the war did not start because of slavery. Lincoln promised freedom to generate support. The North owned slaves but called them indentured servants. Slaves were going to become outdated due to technology and machinery. I have never owned a slave or met a slave. Get over it. That is why they call it History.

NEW YORK — The US Open Tennis Championship appears on a wish list of terror targets in an al Qaeda magazine, an NYPD official said Wednesday. In a briefing for New York City’s private security community, Rebecca Weiner, the NYPD’s director of intelligence analysis, warned that Inspire magazine is instructing would-be terrorists on how to make bombs and where to set them off, WCBS 880´s Marla Diamond reported. The magazine lists targets in Washington, D.C.; Virginia; and New York — including the US Open, which begins Aug. 25 in Flushing Meadows, Queens. Weiner stressed that police are not aware of any

State Sen. Michael Watson of Pascagoula argued the case for McDaniel, one of his close friends and political allies. Cochran finished with a 7,667-vote margin of victory, according to official results.

Welcome to America! As reported earlier today by Kristinn Taylor… The Obama administration has awarded a $50 million contract to a charitable group to buy a Texas resort hotel and transform it in to a 600 bed facility for juvenile illegal aliens. The beautiful Palm Aire resort and hotel has an indoor Olympic sized pool and an outdoor pool. Free Wi-Fi and cable TV are included in the simply decorated guest rooms. The Palm Aire Hotel and Suites is set to be sold to Baptist Child & Family Services (BCFS) operating under a federal contract, pending local government approval, according

The former Taliban prisoner is gearing up for the investigation into his disappearance and abduction in Afghanistan. His new lawyer says Bergdahl is grateful to the president for making the prisoner swap that brought him home. U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl has a new lawyer to defend him as the Army investigates the circumstances surrounding his kidnapping by the Taliban in 2009. And the former hostage wants President Obama to know that he is grateful the U.S. government traded five Taliban commanders in exchange for his release in May. “Sergeant Bergdahl is deeply grateful to President Obama for saving his life,” Bergdahl’s

If the Palestinians are merely engaged in a nationalist struggle for self-determination, then why are they inciting genocide of Jewry? In the midst of Operation Protective Edge, Hamas released a music video in Hebrew calling for the Palestinians to bomb Israel and kill all Israelis. “Raze it [Israel] to the ground, exterminate the cockroaches’ nest, and banish all the Zionists,” the lyrics read. Some human rights activists and lawyers may get a sense of déjà vu upon reading these words. Back in 1994, there were several radio broadcasts calling for the extermination of human cockroaches. They were in Rwanda. When the Hutus began their

TOPEKA, Kan. — Democratic challenger Paul Davis sought Tuesday to give his campaign for Kansas governor a bipartisan boost by announcing endorsements from more than 100 moderate Republicans who´ve split with conservative GOP Gov. Sam Brownback over education and tax policy. The disaffected Republicans include outgoing Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger, three former Kansas Senate presidents and three former Kansas House speakers. More than half are former legislators, and the list includes former U.S. Rep. Jan Meyers, who represented the Kansas City-area 3rd District from 1985 to 1997. They announced that they formed Republicans for Kansas Values because of their concerns about the

The headline from AP certainly is alarming: “100 Kansas GOP endorse Democrat for governor.” And the lead paragraph continues the theme: Democratic challenger Paul Davis sought Tuesday to give his campaign for Kansas governor a bipartisan boost by announcing endorsements from more than 100 moderate Republicans who´ve split with conservative GOP Gov. Sam Brownback over education and tax policy. You might be wondering, to borrow Thomas Frank’s infamous book title, “What’s the matter with Kansas”? I can’t claim to be an expert on the Jayhawker State, but it does appear that this is a matter of sour grapes: Six state senators on

The U.S. deported Honduran children as young as 1-1/2 years old on Monday in the first flight since President Obama pledged to speed up the process of sending back illegal immigrant minors from Central America. Fleeing violence and poverty, record numbers of children from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala have crossed into the United States over the past year, sparking intense debate about how to solve the problem. Monday´s flight from New Mexico to San Pedro Sula, the city with the highest murder rate in the world, returned 17 Honduran women, as well as 12 girls and nine boys, aged

The Obama administration quietly announced on Tuesday that it intends to change the way Americans learn about natural disasters and other major emergencies during radio and TV broadcasts, giving the president the ability to flip a switch and address the entire nation at once. The Emergency Alert System, the latest version of a program first established in 1951, blasts out emergency messages in the event of local weather emergencies, but can also be used to warn Americans about terror attacks and major natural disasters. In his message to the “Mexico/Holy See Colloquium on Migration and Development,” Pope Francis characterized the tens of thousands of illegal immigrants that have crossed the U.S. southern border as a product of globalization, suggesting that the phenomenon is happening worldwide. Francis proclaimed, “Despite the large influx of migrants present in all continents and in almost all countries, migration is still seen as an emergency, or as a circumstantial and sporadic fact, while instead it has now become a hallmark of our society and a challenge.” Emmer McCarthy for Vatican Radio said Francis expressed his concern for “the tens of thousands of

The First Lady of these United States has declared war on Chick-fil-A. It seems the home of plump juicy breasts and hot buttered buns has run afoul of the new Smart Snacks in School program. The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School. They’ve just learned they will no longer be allowed to buy Chick-fil-A

“Trust” is for Con Men: The reaction to the border chaos in Texas has accomplished one thing: It has exploded the lie at the heart of current “comprehensive” immigration reform plans. The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security. Mr. McCain, the highest-profile Republican of the U.S. Senate’s “Gang of Eight” that came up with amnesty as the solution to the immigration crisis — and it truly is a crisis — is finally taking a hard line against President Obama for his encouraging the tidal wave of illegal aliens swamping the southwestern border. “There has to be a halt to this,” Mr. McCain thundered Sunday on CNN. “That’s what we want, and the best way to do that is for planeloads of these young people to be returning to their country of origin

It had to come sometime, and it came in one very bad week for the Democrats: that the many big problems with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama finally grew too great for the press to ignore. WASHINGTON — It was an enduring image of his presidency: a chastened Bill Clinton walking his dog while wife Hillary keeps her distance as the family leaves town at the height of the Monica Lewinsky scandal — but it was all part of a contrived public-repentance campaign, according to a new book. With Bill on the skids and his wife’s future prospects on the line, it was necessary for the pubic to see the president being punished, said Weekly Standard online editor Daniel Halper in his new book, “Clinton, Inc.: The Audacious Rebuilding of a Political Machine.” “They understood that
