Mount Everest avalanche kills
12 guides; 4 still missing

USA Today, by Natalie DiBlasio

An avalanche has left 12 dead and four missing in the worst-ever recorded disaster on Mount Everest. With peak season just days away on the deadly mountain, Sherpas and guides are busy preparing for the trek up the highest peak in the world. "The Sherpa guides were carrying up equipment and other necessities for climbers when the disaster happened," a spokesman for Nepal´s Tourism Ministry, Mohan Krishna Sapkota, told the AFP news agency. Before a climber begins the ascent, hired Sherpas set up camps at higher altitudes and fix routes and ropes on the slopes above. The Sherpa guides had

Comments:
The Nepalese Sherpas have arguably the most dangerous jobs in the world. Let´s pray that 2014 isn´t deadlier than 1996 on Everest. Climbers caught above the avalanche have no way to descend, their ladders and fixed ropes no longer there. At times I have wanted to go to the Himalayas and climb, but then reason takes over.

Not having a need for adventure I don´t understand people climbing, sky diving, bungi jumping (sp), snake handling, or dying your hair crayon red etc. For me adventure is trying a new toilet paper. But I am sorry for their deaths and the pain it will cause their families. I hope it was worth it but I assume in the back of their minds the possibility of death always lingered. I know tomorrow is promised to no one and we can go at any time for any reason. At least they were doing what they loved and without the spirit of adventure America might not have been discovered and we might not have landed on the moon. Thank you to those who have made our lives better because of your spirit. Prayer for them and for their friends and families.

I have hike to Everest Base Camp.
It was an amazing trip and I recommend everyone that is adventurous, put it in their bucket.
Climbing Everest is not such a good idea.
First of all thousands have summited and hundreds do it each year so it is not that special anymore.
The monetary cost is crazy (75K USD) the time required is several months and the human cost is off scale.
Going to base camp is 10% of the cost in time and money and 90% of the fun and experience. Above base camp its hard work, cold and dangerous.

Articles of the avalanche disaster are appearing in profusion now. The link below shows a picture of the rugged beauty of the high Himalayas, taken from an airplane out of Kathmandu. In the center of the picture, all of Everest that can be seen is the pyramid of the mountain´s upper regions. To the left is the long, mainly horizontal summit ridge of the 25,900 foot Nuptse; to the right is the awesome south face of Lhotse, the fourth highest summit in the world, at about 27,800 feet elevation.

Just as soon as Israel accepted an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire Hamas fired 47 rockets killing one Israeli citizen. Anyone who has followed the conflict could have predicted this with certainty; the point of a ceasefire — for a terrorist organization — is to break it for exactly the same reason it purposely attacks women and children. Dr. Anna Geifman tried to explain that the reason why innocents are selected as terror targets is because “children are the last consecrated absolute”. That is just why they must be killed in the cruelest way possible. For “militant nihilism strives to ruin first and

Charlie Haden, who died on Friday at age 76, was one of the most revered and influential acoustic jazz bassists of his generation, largely because he was incapable of being dull. Rooted in folk and country music, Haden combined earthy simplicity with an engaging storytelling style that inspired and propelled the music of dozens of artists, from saxophonist Ornette Coleman and pianist Keith Jarrett to drummer Ginger Baker and singer Norah Jones. His conversational approach to improvisation forged a new model for post-1960 jazz bassists, resulting in four Grammys.

Bill Roggio has a very interesting article describing the ISIS plan to invest Baghdad. (Snip) As everyone now knows the campaign against US forces back in 2006 failed. The attackers were counter-encircled by US-led forces who established intelligence assets of their own to find and destroy the enemy. Much effort was put into tracking back weapons smuggling routes back to their sources, including explosively formed penetration IEDs whose cores were manufactured in Iran. US conventional units provided the “top cover” for the intel guys who went out to look for the enemy. Now ISIS is playing the same number on

Why Israel will soon be the only state able to govern Judea and Samaria, and the only military force capable of securing its borders. A one-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is upon us. It won’t arrive by Naftali Bennett’s proposal to annex the West Bank’s Area C, or through the efforts of BDS campaigners and Jewish Voice for Peace to alter the Jewish state. But it will happen, sooner rather than later, as the states on Israel’s borders disintegrate and other regional players annex whatever they can. As that happens, Israeli sovereignty in Judea and Samaria is becoming inevitable.

The Democratic Party creates its coalition by catering to a diverse group of ethnic interest groups, and sometimes the special interests of those special interest groups clash. (Snip) It’s true that our government’s reaction to what’s happening on the border makes no sense if we ordinary people look at it conventionally. But it makes plenty of sense to Obama and others in his party who think it will give them a permanent and unbeatable majority in the not-too-distant future, as well as placate the huge Hispanic voting bloc in the present. The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security.
