Detroit bailout plans just paper over
the problem with more money

Washington Examiner, by Shikha Dalmia

In Detroit´s unfolding saga, the only innocent victims are city residents. So if there is any case for a Motown bailout, it is to make the city more livable for them. However, that seems to be the main goal of neither the Democratic White House nor the state´s Republican governor -- both of whom have come up with nifty new schemes to shovel taxpayer largesse to city retirees. Just two weeks ago, Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr had been threatening to put a buzzsaw to the city´s $3.5 billion unfunded pension liabilities to lop off savings to “invest” in city services. Detroit is facing

The people of Detroit are not "innocent". They have elected and continue to elect the crooks who have put the city in the economic situation that it finds itself in.

The people of Detroit are not innocent for more than their voting record. They are the people who shoot out street lights so they can deal drugs, murder each other for no good reason, won´t tell who the murderers and drug dealers are, mob attack people based on their skin color, and basically just tear everything up and demand more. 0bama´s sons.

Under the leadership of crooks and sleazy mayors, one wonders how the city ever became the impressive city it once was. Having lived about 50 miles West of Detroit from January 1967 until July 2013, I watched Detroit´s decline with sadness.

1967 was not really the beginning of the decline, but the 1967 riots sealed Detroit´s fate. Once Coleman Young took over Detroit as mayor for twenty years, New Orleans lost, IMO, as the foremost "chocolate city". Detroit ultimately was as "under water"( only financially) as New Orleans ever was during its terrible flood caused by hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Detroit thinks they have secured enough OPM to pay, almost all, of the pension promises.

The Governor and Legislature will be for it because otherwise they might have to come up with even more later. And they just want the issue to go away.

Washington will be for it because the money will go to public employees, the aristocracy of our society. And besides, it is all OPM. The Treasury somehow magically always has enough.

Asking the public employees to vote on it is a farce.

And the Emergency Manager leaves soon. He wants to leave things tidy. And the Mayor and Council want it done by then so they won´t face the problem.

The Bankruptcy Judge has no reason to care.

Searching for Hillary Clinton’s big idea

Here’s one thing you won’t find in Hillary Clinton’s book: a clear reason to run for president again. The “Hard Choices” book tour has had all the trappings of a warm-up for 2016, and even though Clinton insists she hasn’t decided yet, she keeps dropping hints that she has ideas for the future of the country. “You’ve got to ask people who want to run for anything, but particularly president, what’s your vision? What is your vision for our country, and do you think you can lead us there?” Clinton said at a CNN “town hall” forum.

The gun-control group founded by former New York mayor Michael R. Bloomberg (I) will begin surveying all federal candidates in the 2014 midterm elections on gun issues Monday as it tries to become a political counterweight to the National Rifle Association. This is the first big step by Bloomberg — who has committed to spending $50 million of his personal fortune this year to build a national grass-roots movement that will pressure lawmakers to pass more restrictive gun laws — to devise a political strategy heading into the November elections. Bloomberg’s group, Everytown for Gun Safety, is asking all Senate and House

You wouldn’t think, five years into the Obama presidency, that so many liberal Americans wouldn’t like America. A new Pew survey found that 44 percent of Americans don’t often feel pride in being an American, and only 28 percent said that America is the greatest country in the world. Respondents who “often feel proud to be American” were overwhelmingly conservative (from 72 percent to 81 percent depending on the kind of conservative). A majority (60 percent) of “solid liberals” said they don’t often feel proud to be an American. The polling data only proves what has been obvious for a

So much for secular stagnation. Thanks to the headline figures and revisions for previous months contained in the Labor Department’s jobs report for June, which was released a day early because of the July 4th holiday, we know that, since the end of March, the economy has generated more than a quarter of a million jobs a month. For June, the payroll figure was 288,000, well above economists’ expectations. During the past three months, the unemployment rate has fallen from 6.7 per cent to 6.1 per cent, and it’s now at its lowest level since Lehman Brothers collapsed in the fall

Brazil banned alcohol sales at soccer matches in 2003 in a bid to curb fan violence. But Budweiser is a major World Cup sponsor and the tournament´s organizer, FIFA, insisted Brazil

DENVER - A new kind of driver’s license for non-citizens will soon be available but even before the Department of Motor Vehicles can issue them, advance requests are clogging up the system. Tens of thousands of drivers in Colorado are calling the DMV to register for the new ID which is clogging the system. Those licenses are the result of a law passed last year that aims to improve public safety by making sure every driver in Colorado, regardless of their legal status, has a license. President Obama will acknowledge Monday that there is no hope for legislation overhauling the immigration system in Congress this year and announce he is redirecting immigration enforcement from the interior of the United States to the border. The action, which beefs up efforts to stem illegal immigration across the border but could slow efforts to deport undocumented immigrants already in the country, is one of series of executive actions Obama will pledge since the House decided not to take up immigration legislation this year. The announcement represents the ends of hopes in the White House and elsewhere that the House might pursue legislation to strengthen the nation’s borders and immigration enforcement while also providing a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. The Senate passed such a bill last year.

Here’s one political paradox: A substantial majority of Americans do not fit neatly into the conventional “liberal” and “conservative” boxes, yet there is no coherent political center. Those who dream of a middle-of-the-road third party are destined to be disappointed. Here’s another: Groups broadly sympathetic to the Democratic Party significantly outnumber those sympathetic to the Republican Party. But in the smaller but influential universe of the ideologically committed, conservative Republicans outnumber liberal Democrats. The larger Democratic coalition has mixed convictions while the smaller Republican core is filled with passionate intensity. Every decade or so, the Pew Research Center sorts the U.S. electorate

Publicly, Obama has remained noncommittal on the 2016 race, but privately he worries that Clinton would undo and undermine many of his policies. There’s also a personal animosity, especially with Bill Clinton, that dates from their tough race six years ago.
