Malcom Young announces
his retirement amid
AC/DC breakup rumors

United Press International, by Annie Martin

SYDNEY, April 16 -- AC/DC founding member Malcom Young announced his retirement on Wednesday amid rumors that the band is breaking up. The band writes in an announcement on their Facebook that "after forty years of life dedicated to AC/DC," Young will be "taking a break from the band due to ill health." "Malcom would like to thank the group´s diehard legions of fans worldwide for their never-ending love and support," the statement continues. "In light of this news, AC/DC asks that Malcom and his family´s privacy be respected during this time. The band will continue to make music."

Comments:
Malcom Young has suffered a stroke, and might not ever be able to play again. To rock and roll fans who´ve enjoyed AC/DC since the early 1970s, this is terrible news. The band has carried their vitality into middle age, recording one of their best albums in 2008, and pleasing their fans the world over in great live performances. Malcom, the older brother of AC/DC lead guitarist Angus, wasn´t as flamboyant, but was in every way just as important to the band.

AC/DC lived through two periods: the first with lead singer Bon Scott, who died of alcohol poisoning in February 1980, and the second with new lead singer Brian Johnson, recruited by Malcom and Angus, who joined shortly after Scott´s death, and has remained with the band ever since.

Scott seemed to be irreplaceable--he most famously sang "Highway to Hell"--with a ridiculous sounding voice that could not be matched by any other human being. (To me he sounded like a midget gnome with scraggly teeth and an ugly face, although he was a normal looking bloke who appeared to be at least average height.)

How could AC/DC go on after losing their crazy lead singer? Well, they just found another crazy lead singer. In the words of AC/DC fan (and fellow rocker) Ted Nugent, "Dear Lord in heaven, where did Angus find that crazy (expletive deleted)!" Back in Black (1980), recorded shortly after Bon Scott´s death, is one of the top selling albums of all time, with nearly fifty million sold. That´s a lot of platinum records! And the band kept going, touring often, and providing solid entertainment. If they´re finished as a group, I will miss them. Those guys had the right attitude. Rock on.

By all rights, the GOP should easily pick up the North Carolina Senate seat currently held by Kay Hagan. (Snip)"Four polls lately put his support somewhere between 8 and 11 percent — not enough to suggest a realistic possibility of winning, but conceivably enough to affect the outcome of the race. The same surveys show the margin between incumbent Democrat Kay Hagan and her GOP challenger, state House Speaker Thom Tillis, at six points or less."

The “right to be forgotten” in European law has now taken the place of what people in the past used to call “the forgiveness of sins”. Formerly it was believed that old offenses, especially when these did not result in prosecution or suit, were somehow effaced by the passage of time. (Snip) The Clintons, for their part, don’t even need legislation to delete the unflattering. The Boston Globe reports that the University of Arkansas suspended access to a news organization which found records showing Hillary had defended a child rapist in 1975. "The Washington Free Beacon

That´s no typo: The name of Ferrari´s latest thunderbolt is LaFerrari, with the article lewdly rubbing against the proper noun. It´s a great name. First, note the anapestic gallop: la-fer-RAR-eee. For a company whose symbol is a black horse this is a trick worthy of our beloved Dante. Please observe, too, how it´s a name that doesn´t give a damn about Anglophones. Is it "the LaFerrari," which parses as "the the Ferrari"? Away from the factory gates, English dog. In tune with a Latin ear, the name italicizes exclusivity and rarity. In his famous short story The Sound of Thunder, Bradbury argued the present stood perched on the past. (Snip) Even if it were possible to change the past, Bradbury argues there is no guarantee that the resulting alternative future would be any better. Our task must to leave the world better than we found it, not to remake it from the foundations. That doesn’t mean the past is gone, but it lacks the special quality of activity. The dead are already costed into the present. They’ve set out the crib, screwed in the lightbulb, defeated Hitler; they were present at

TARPON SPRINGS — It took more than 50 days and intervention by U.S. officials for the six-man of crew of Aqua Quest to finally be freed from a jail in a remote port in Honduras. The captain of the Tarpon Springs salvage ship, Robert Mayne, says he feels lucky. “For us, it was a brutal, difficult, long, slow procedure. Our friends in Honduras told us it was lighting quick. They generally never move that quick,” said Mayne, who was jailed on May 5 along with his crew on charges of smuggling weapons in the port town of Puerto Lempira. Others

News that Quinnipiac poll finds president Obama is the “worst president since World War II” was greeted with amusement. (Snip) . But the real news is this: it’s not working any more. Even Obamacare might actually be repealed. Liberal foreign policy might really go down in flames. Already the authorities are warning of bombs on inbound airline flights. The Obamas have spent over 44 million dollars in taxpayer money on travel and vacations. Some are even calling him the “most well-trvaeled, expensive” president in our nation’s history. Our president vacations a lot — we’re talking $44,351,777.12 worth of “a lot,” with most expenses charged to the American taxpayer. President Obama has quietly promised Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren complete support if she runs for president — a stinging rebuke to his nemesis Hillary Clinton, sources tell me. Publicly, Obama has remained noncommittal on the 2016 race, but privately he worries that Clinton would undo and undermine many of his policies. There’s also a personal animosity, especially with Bill Clinton, that dates from their tough race six years ago. A former Harvard law professor and administration aide, Warren would energize the left wing of the Democrat Party just as Obama did against Clinton in 2008. The vast majority of 50,000 unaccompanied youths and children who have illegally crossed the Texas border during the last few months have been successfully delivered by federal agencies to their relatives living in the United States, according to a New York Times article.
