Schools Could Learn a Lot From

When a video of high school student Jeff Bliss calling out his teacher went viral, a lot of people started talking about the state of our education system and ways to improve it. However, almost a year since the video was posted, not much has changed. In fact, many would say that with the extension of Common Core curriculum across most of the country, it has actually gotten worse. Take this attempted explanation of Common Core’s approach to math: (Letter & Charts) How is this helping? Making word problems math situations more difficult to understand and contorting what would be

I can´t see a single positive aspect about anything here -- not the barely literate student behaving boorishly, not the public school system that failed to educate him, not the teacher whose only wish is to see him leave the room, and certainly not the prospects for seeing improvement in any of these things. Just another day in the public school system.

#2 - while I know what you mean, I do see something positive, a student who wants more, who wants to be educated, and is right... It´s not about handing a child a pack of paper, it´s about engaging a youth´s mind and helping it grow. I saw a kid asking for help and WANTING to learn. I´ll take that as hope for the future.

@#2?? The boorish kid? Please...recognize when someone has had his or her absolute fill of being treated like a lump or a spot on the all by a teacher and a system that simply does not give one whit about teaching kids. They are brain wash masters and job holders...that´s it! The kid wants an education and is recognizing the failure from the student´s point of view. Most kids are content to take the easy road and jsut sit there and get a passing grade. Not that kid. He want´s more...in fact, all he wants is what the state once promised him...a quality education. He´s getting nothing out of what the system is offering because it is pure garbage and he realizes it!

Keep in mind the Jebster likes Common Core.

#2 WTH? Nothing positive? What did you see?

I saw a young man, wanting to learn, wanting the teacher to get engaged and interact with the students so they can actually learn something!

I saw a young man who describes a lazy teacher who shouldn´t be in the classroom, but do to unions will continue to WASTE students time and learning experience.

I saw a young man who is worried about the future of his fellow students because the lack of an education.

This young man did a great service by speaking up. We need to know what is going on in these classrooms.

Super kudos for this mature kid who wants to learn, most teachers would love to have him for a student! #1, I really do take offense at that worn-out ditty about "those who can´t, teach". Try it! You´ll change your mind. But not if you mind giving up your weekends to do lesson plans that have to include objectives, how they apply to what you are teaching, and how to measure the success of each subject. Forget long summer vacations, have to attend meetings, classes, etc., to keep up with newest education projects and then take extra courses to stay current. And about the rumor that school is over at 2 or 3. Forget it! Teachers stay to correct papers, plan the next day, and CLEAN UP. If one is lucky, you can get home in time to fix supper.
And don´t forget the biggest challenge of all, engaging some students who do not want to be there and delight in disrupting the class. Classroom management is the hardest skill of all for most teachers to master...but then once you do, teaching is one of the most rewarding things that I have ever done. And one of the hardest!

In the interview that comes up in videos at the end, he said he dropped out of school for a year and that´s when he realized he needed an education.

I think that year did Jeff a world of good and he was able to see just how much of a Non-Education he was receiving from this teacher.

Maybe that´s the answer to the education problem, make kids drop out for a year do some really hard manual labor with strict rules then send them back to class. That might straighten them up And they would then Demand to be taught like this guy.

If the people receiving the teaching services demand a change, maybe change would come.

The tales of one violent weekend in New York are by turns familiar, surreal and heartbreaking. And they’re growing in number this year. There’s Deleta Crawford, paralyzed from the waist down by a stray bullet after grocery shopping. Ibrahim Diabate, guilty only of working on his jump shot. Renee Shaw, one of four wounded at a joyous neighborhood picnic. The three were carrying on their normal lives until in an instant they became gunshot victims. There were drive-by shootings, and gang disputes, and bullets fired through a third-floor apartment window. Three more victims, in a particularly cruel twist, were targeted

When President Obama gets outside and tries to meet real people, the White House likes to say that "the bear is loose" -- and such was the case Tuesday in Denver. During a night out in the Mile High City, Obama munched pizza with supporters, greeted residents on a downtown street, and shot some pool. First came a stop at a popular spot called the Wazee Supper Club, where Obama shared pizza with five people who wrote him letters. The president also roamed the restaurant greeting patrons, at one point complimenting a bartender´s multi-hued facial hair by saying, "that´s a

A bad case of whiplash. That’s what it feels like watching the Obama Administration talk about immigration enforcement. Two weeks ago, Obama told ABC News that most of the recent illegal border crossers would be sent home. Then on Sunday, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson refused to answer straightforward questions about deporting them. And now as the President seeks an additional $3.8 billion from Congress to deal with the crisis, the White House is trying to convince us anew that they are serious about enforcement. Right, and if you like your health insurance plan, you can keep it. “The immigration

Immigration: During his re-election campaign, President Obama said emphatically that the southwestern border was secure. Now he wants billions to cope with the flood of illegals crossing that very border. According to various news accounts, the number of illegals coming across the border has surged to 35,000 month. In just the past few months, more than 50,000 unaccompanied children crossed over, creating a huge humanitarian crisis. How can this possibly be happening? After all, didn´t Obama tell us when he ran for re-election that the border with Mexico was secure? As a matter of fact, he did. Many times. In a

Dozens of leading U.S. press organizations are urging the Obama administration to live up to its transparency promises and reverse a trend of increased secrecy at federal agencies. Thirty-eight national press organizations and transparency groups—including the Society for Professional Journalists, Investigative Reporters and Editors, and the Poynter Institute—called on the Obama administration to end “politically driven suppression of news and information about federal agencies,” in a letter to the White House released Tuesday. “Over the past two decades, public agencies have increasingly prohibited staff from communicating with journalists unless they go through public affairs offices or through political appointees,” the

President Obama evidently has decided not to put a human face on the crisis unfolding at the U.S. southern border—not even his own. The White House said over and over again Monday that Obama will not travel to the border with Mexico despite flying to Texas this week to raise money for Democratic candidates there. It´s certainly in part a political decision, one meant to avoid taking ownership of a difficult issue on which the White House would prefer to share blame.
