Iraq Shuts Down the Abu Ghraib
Prison, Citing Security Concerns

New York Times, by Duraid Adnan & Tim Arango

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 4/16/2014 11:26:03 AM

Baghdad - The Iraqi government said Tuesday that it had closed the Abu Ghraib prison, the site of a notorious prisoner abuse scandal during the American occupation of Iraq, because of fears that it could be overrun by Sunni insurgents who have gained strength over the last year. In a statement, the Justice Ministry said it had moved 2,400 prisoners to other high-security prisons in central and northern Iraq, adding that Abu Ghraib’s location — west of central Baghdad and on the edge of insurgent-controlled areas of Anbar Province — had become a “hot zone.” It was not clear whether the closing was permanent, or if the prison might reopen

Comments:
The American humiliation continues as 0bama lack of policy undoes gains made in the War on Terror. (A few months back, there were many successful attempts at freeing Al-Qaeda prisoners at mass staged raids throughout Middle East).

Leading Republican senators charged Thursday that National Security Adviser Susan Rice’s public account of the Benghazi terror attack has now “absolutely collapsed,” citing inaccuracies in her statements not only on the origin of the attack but the level of security at the U.S. compound. The lawmakers said she is clearly “frustrated” that her story is falling apart, a day after Rice appeared to scoff at a question on whether a congressional select committee probe would reveal new evidence. “Danged if I know,” Rice said in response to the question Wednesday. "She´s frustrated this won´t go away,"Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.,

Washington - The Obama administration’s legal team has told Congress that if Guantánamo Bay detainees were relocated to a prison inside the United States, it is unlikely that a court would order their release onto domestic soil. In a nine-page, unclassified report delivered late Wednesday, the Justice Department and the Pentagon expressed confidence that existing law provided “robust protection of the national security.” It added that Congress could also take steps to further reduce any legal risk that detainees transferred to the United States could be released. Under President Obama’s plan to close the Guantánamo prison, detainees who are

At the annual City University Journalism School dinner, on Monday, Dean Baquet, the managing editor of the New York Times, was seated with Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., the paper’s publisher. At the time, I did not give a moment’s thought to why Jill Abramson, the paper’s executive editor, was not at their table. Then, at 2:36 P.M. on Wednesday, an announcement from the Times hit my e-mail, saying that Baquet would replace Abramson, less than three years after she was appointed the first woman in the top job. Baquet will be the first African-American to lead the Times. Fellow-journalists and others scrambled to find out what had

Landlord Joe Biden will keep collecting rent checks from the agency that protects his life thanks to another contract extension that allows Secret Service agents to continue staying in a cottage on his Delaware property. The latest extension, signed on May 6, boosts the overall value of the contract to more than $100,000 since the agency first started paying Mr. Biden a few years ago. The arrangement, first reported by The Washington Times, puts Mr. Biden in the unusual position of being both a sitting vice president and a vendor for the federal government at the same time. The deal has come under scrutiny from taxpayer watchdogs

The resignation of the United Nations special envoy to Syria provided a new indicator of the dim prospects at present for a diplomatic solution to the war in Syria, which has killed more than 150,000 since March 2011. Lakhdar Brahimi´s departure comes as the Syrian regime, emboldened by a string of battlefield victories, gears up for elections to renew Bashar al-Assad´s presidency, a move that Mr. Brahimi reportedly once said would spell an end to negotiations. BAUCHI, Nigeria — Villagers in an area of Nigeria where Boko Haram operates have killed and detained scores of the extremist Islamic militants who were suspected of planning a fresh attack, the residents and a security official said. Residents in Nigeria’s northern states have been forming vigilante groups in various areas to resist the militants who have held more than 270 schoolgirls captive since last month. In Kalabalge, a village about 250 kilometers (155 miles) from the Borno state capital of Maiduguri, residents said they were taking matters into their own hands because the Nigerian military is not doing enough to stem Boko Haram

Haverford College on Tuesday joined a growing list of schools to lose commencement speakers to protests from the left, when Robert J. Some students and faculty members at Haverford, a liberal arts college near Philadelphia, objected to the invitation to Mr. Birgeneau to speak and receive an honorary degree because, under him, the University of California police used batons to break up an Occupy protest in 2011. He first stated his support for the police, and then a few days later, saying that he was disturbed by videos of the

They now say that the time in question is not free reading time, but instead Accelerated Reader Program time. During this period, students can only read certain approved books, and the Bible is not among them. Hence, Broward County Public Schools will continue banning the Bible. However, Liberty Institute lawyer Jeremy Dys investigated the program. He reports that contrary to the school´s claim,

Karl Rove created a stir with his recent suggestion that former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton may have suffered traumatic brain injury in December 2012. Speaking at a conference in California, he noted, “Thirty days in the hospital? And when she reappears, she’s wearing glasses that are only for people who have traumatic brain injury? We need to know what’s up with that.” Let’s ignore the media hyperventilating and look at what Rove actually suggested. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, traumatic brain injury, or TBI, “occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain.” Secretary Clinton reportedly

With the latest Benghazi! ™ extravaganza about to begin, the Democrats are faced with a dilemma. Should they boycott the silly hearings, thus leaving the Republicans to put on their pageant unimpeded, or should they join in with a full panel and add legitimacy to the process? The problem seems to be that whether they like it or not, these hearings are going to be covered. And if the press reaction so far tells us anything, they are looking for a show.
