Common Core´s Dirtiest Trick:
Dividing Parents and Children

American Thinker, by Bruce Deitrick Price

When you look back at New Math (ca. 1965) and Reform Math (ca. 1990), one of the most striking and persistent features was that parents could not understand the homework their children brought home. Mystified parents were trying to advise mystified children. The parents, presumably the wise members of the society, were helpless to say anything useful when confronted by the weird complexities of “reform” math, which has now been rolled forward into Common Core. Here is a commonplace horror story that can stand in for millions of others: “When Mike and Camille Chudzinski tried to help their son with

We had a parent teacher conference with a math teacher. My husband challenged her with the math problems. He pretty much said what the heck are you teaching? He took a piece of paper and pen out and showed her how to do the math problem correctly. Ha!

These educators are robots who repeat what they are told to do...

Jeb Bush is a huge supporter of Common Core. We are just now finding out what exactly the core is and it´s not at all common.

There are ads on TV right now pushing common core with two "teachers" specifically saying very earnestly in exactly these words, "Common Core is NOT a government program." Do we think the government believes push-back is coming fast and hard?

Another faux pas for Jebbie to explain along with illegal immigration "is an act of love" and not lawless behavior at all.

The last new math to hit public schools resulted in cashiers not being able to make change when the cash registers went down. The customer had to tell them the change due back. Now with common core, they´ll get out reams of computer paper and draw boxes, rectangles, sticks, and dots and after 20 minutes figure out the change due. I don´t call that progress. Public schools should take the curriculum back to the 1920s through the 1940s, when students actually learned something. Oh, can´t have that and lose the public school distinction as being #1 in self-esteem.

I help my grandchildren with their homework everyday. We do not have common core here in Va, but our school system is using their worksheets as far as math is concerned. My reaction when I first encountered this illogical way of adding and subtracting was, "what psycho thought of this method."
My theory for the round about way of coming up with an answer was that too many kids find memorization difficult, so to help those children "be successful" we no longer memorize addition, subtraction, or multiplication tables. I show my grandkids how easy it is to come to the right answer the old fashioned way.

My daughter´s son made A´s in math last year. He is failing this year. She asked if he could bring the tests home so she could help him and was told "no". Now she has hired a tutor and is getting the tutor to go to the school and look at the test so she can see where he is going wrong. The schools are setting education back 100 years. It is no wonder the home-schooled children excel in everything.

This can be traced back to Obamas friends like Bill Ayers and others in Chicago who were given millions in government grants to develop this idea.Bill Gates also played a big role in it as did the Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, another Obama flunky from Chicago.

I work in the school system although not in math. I have witnessed frustrated teachers trying to teach a math they did not learn. One brave teacher told the class while I was in there, now there is a simpler way called multiplication, and explained that way as an alternative. The kids were like wow ok I get that. She´s my hero for the week.

The subjects and methods change, but the aim is the same: replace two-parent families with government in all its forms.

Leftists don´t believe in gay marriage or the ability of a same-sex couple to properly raise a well-balanced child any more than they believe in the man in the moon. But claiming they do and driving as many railroad spikes into the building blocks of society as possible is construction through destruction in their eyes.

Thanks to inheritance, I have some 120+ year old textbooks. Today´s teachers would not be able to solve the problems. I am 73. My grandmother, who finished the 8th grade, was better at math than my mother, who finished high school. "New Math" was invented by "experts" who wanted everybody to become a professional mathematician.
I am a professional mathematician. I know where this garbage originates.
The math one needs is the math one memorizes: sum tables and times tables, up to 12 by 12.
The rot set in with Gauss (one of the two or three greatest mathematicians of all time). In his published work Gauss removed all of the background reasoning, providing only the logical steps to his conclusions. Imitating Gauss, generations of mathematicians have been insanely logical, providing only the logical reasoning and leaving out all of the motivation. If you are not taught the "why", you have no tag to use to remember the details.
We learn by going from the specific to the general. See Piaget and others.
"Modern Math" goes from the general to the specific, and the result is the student can´t achieve mastery. Best example: the "budget" of the United States. New Math all the way.

#12 Thank you for that explanation. As someone who had to grow up under New Math, I had to endure the dichotomy of the frustration it entailed coupled with the feminista´s yammering about how there weren´t enough women in math and sciences and why weren´t young girls more confident about their ability. I had always gravitated towards the sciences, but felt stymied by the mathematical portion. So much for self-esteem right? I knew I wouldnt be brilliant at math, but it seemed like the light could have clicked on more than it did, if only I could understand why.

additionally, while Ayers et al and "Common Core" deserve even more blame than is being assigned here, the rot goes back a good bit further. Try back over 100 years and the work of John Dewey, whose acolytes, and theirs, and theirs, have done so much to damage the nation and create dutiful robots. All part of the "Progressive" movements that go back a century or more and include creeps like Dewey and Woodrow Wilson and many others.

Look at the kindergarten abstract for mathematics. Great if the student has an IQ of 120 or greater. Horrible if the student has an IQ of under 100.

Complex numbers are introduce by 1st or 2nd grade. ie [2+3] x [3+2] or 5 x 5. Once again, good for gifted students but bad for average or below average.

Despite fiery statements issued by Hamas spokesmen over the past 48 hours, it was obvious Tuesday night that the Islamist movement was searching for ways to rid itself of the current escalation. Hamas feels that it has been forced into a confrontation with Israel – one that it did not want at this stage because of its increased isolation and financial crisis. The massive Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours have surprised Hamas and other Palestinian groups. Hamas apparently expected a limited response to the recent rocket attacks on Israeli cities and towns. But as the

Ever since President George W. Bush said “Islam is peace” on Sept. 17, 2001, it has been politically shielded from any debate about its effects on its adherents or on the rest of the world. Muslim nations and pressure groups such as the Council on American-Islamic Relations have used political correctness as a weapon to punish anyone who dared to begin any debate on Islam by calling them “Islamophobes,” an accusation of racism. Half a dozen things went through my mind. Maybe he’s trying some sort of Cloward-Piven maneuver: an attempt to overwhelm our welfare state to the point where we replace it with “a guaranteed annual income and thus an end to poverty.” Or maybe he’s just trying to flood the population with Democrat voters.
