Relax, Mumsnet users: don´t lose
sleep over Heartbleed hysteria

Telegraph [UK], by Michael Hanlon

Remember Lovebug? This was the computer virus that swept through a young and fresh-faced internet in May 2000. Back then we were told it would do to cyberspace what the Black Death had done to Europe in the 14th century. We all got funny emails with “ILOVEYOU” attachments and when we tried to open them our computers exploded. Or rather they didn’t, though you wouldn’t have known that from the hysteria. Then along came MyDoom, Netsky, Witty and Melissa and, now, the deliciously named Heartbleed bug, which the US security expert Bruce Schneier has described as “catastrophic” and which has

This guy has a point.

Mr A scraped XP off one of my laptops and replaced it with Linux. Soon as I began to shut down the computer after a first try, I noticed a difference in the LSO counter (an add-on from the reviled Firefox--Wikipedia can explain LSOs better than I). I´ve seen XP when it registered sixty or so--on Linux it found one. Ah, said A, they know Linux is not as lucrative as Microsnot. My XP laptop now shows a count of one--so much for expecting a hacker to rush inside that unprotected XP.

Maybe later...

Why is it a good thing for the Cornish--or for anyone else--that they have now been officially declared a “national minority”? Cornwall has a distinct history of which it is justly proud. But the same can be said of Co Durham, with its centuries of self-government as a Prince-bishopric, or Northumberland, or Yorkshire. [Snip] There is something unhealthy and divisive about this obsession with legally defining minorities. People say it “celebrates diversity”, but actually it forces people into tortuous self-definitions which do not reflect modern reality; and it is uncomfortable for those it excludes. Ukraine crisis: ´International

Pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine have seized a bus carrying international military observers, Ukraine´s interior ministry says. Negotiations were under way to secure the release of the observers, seized near the town of Sloviansk, it added. Western leaders earlier announced they were debating fresh sanctions against Russia over its alleged failure to help de-escalate the crisis in Ukraine. Russia has accused the West of wanting to "seize" Ukraine. Moscow has tens of thousands of troops stationed along its side of the border with Ukraine and pro-Russian separatists have been occupying key buildings in a dozen eastern towns, defying the central

Hurrah for Kate and Wills. I don´t want to sound too much like a 16-page Daily Mail pull-out celebratory royal supplement here. But I´m going to have to because it´s true: on their massively successful three-week tour of Australia and New Zealand Prince William (aka the Duke of Cambridge) and Kate (aka the Duchess of Cambridge)--plus, of course, Prince George--have put the naysayers firmly back in their box and proved that the royal succession is in very safe hands. Readers in America may be forgiven if they weren´t even aware that this tour was taking place. That´s because it has

Fans of ´Parks and Recreation´ have been waiting most of the season to see if Amy Poehler´s character, Leslie Knope, would leave Pawnee, Indiana, for a new job in Chicago at the National Park Service. On last night´s season finale, it was First Lady Michelle Obama that gave her that final nudge. [Snip] ´You are from Chicago, so you like,´ it, Poehler´s Leslie fumbles out in response before ending their exchange on this bit of praise: ´I agree with you on all things throughout history and till the end of time, forever.´ The appearance gave Obama ample opportunity to plug her Let´s

Europe is impotent in

According to Jürgen Stark, a former board member of the European Central Bank (ECB), it is not just “misguided” but “irresponsible” to be warning about the threat of deflation in Europe. Instead, he invites us to shut up about it altogether, for “the longer this discussion continues, and the more intense it becomes, the more likely the risk of a self-fulfilling prophecy”. Let’s just close down the debate, he seems to be saying, because we policy-makers know better. The evidence of the past three years, it has to be said, strongly suggests otherwise. In any case, the prophecy of price deflation

Suspicion grows that China is exporting

The Chinese Yuan weakened yet again this morning, punching through the key line of 6.25 against the dollar. It is almost back to where it was two years ago. This is the biggest story in the global currency markets. Yuan devaluation has reached 3.1pc this year. The longer this goes on, the harder it is to accept Beijing’s story that it is one-off measure to teach speculators a lesson and curb hot money inflows. The US Treasury clearly suspects that the Chinese authorities have reverted to their mercantilist tricks, driving down the exchange rate to keep struggling exporters afloat. Officials briefed

[Snip] Here´s one of the passages which shows that Blair totally (or--as we´ll see in a moment--almost but not quite totally) gets it. Although the sight of Britain’s most sophisticated fighter jet shadowing the ageing Russian Tupolev-95--a dinosaur from the Cold War--gives the reassuring impression that we have a military edge over Moscow, this image could not be further from the truth. If the worst case scenario in Ukraine were to transpire, tipping the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation into a conventional war to defend Europe against the advancing massed ranks of Russian tank divisions there is little we could

Lawmakers, which passed the bill by wide bipartisan margins in he waning hours of the year´s legislative session, notably excluded the state capitol where they work from the list of places where pre-vetted Georgians can now pack heat without penalty. President Obama’s landslide victory in 2008 was supposed to herald the beginning of a new Democratic era. And yet, six years later, there is not even a clear Democratic majority in the country, let alone one poised for 30 years of dominance. It’s not because Mr. Obama’s so-called new coalition of young and nonwhite voters failed to live up to its potential. They again turned out in record numbers in 2012. The Democratic majority has failed to materialize because the Republicans made large, countervailing and unappreciated gains of their own among white Southerners. Secretary of State John Kerry delivered a stern warning to Russia Thursday evening, one week after a tentative agreement to defuse the crisis in Ukraine appeared to have no impact on the violent clashes between pro-Russian separatists and the Ukrainian government. "The window to change course is closing," Kerry told reporters at the State Department. "President [Vladimir] Putin and Russia face a choice." If Russia does not reverse course and take action to urge the separatists to stand down and give up their arms, Kerry said the U.S. and its allies are poised to take actions directed at hurting Russia´s economy.

In late 2011, nearing the eve of the formal start of the 2012 presidential election cycle, America’s liberal commentators had already watched a series of Republican presidential debates and formed their opinions of the prospective GOP candidates.
