Asian pollution is causing a ´dramatic´

America say scientists

Air pollution in China and other Asian countries is causing storms in North America to become stronger and changing weather patterns across the Northern Hemisphere, a new Nasa study has claimed. [Snip] The effect was most pronounced during the winter, the team said. Lead author Yuan Wang, from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology, said: ´There appears to be little doubt that these particles from Asia affect storms sweeping across the Pacific and subsequently the weather patterns in North America and the rest of the world. ´The effects are quite dramatic.

Global Warming Study Ridiculed

A UK Met Office study that predicted temperatures would rise by up to half a degree centigrade over the past 10 years faces ridicule after it was revealed that temperatures actually dropped over that period. The peer-reviewed study by Doug M. Smith et al, entitled “Improved Surface Temperature Prediction for the Coming Decade from a Global Climate Model”--and which featured in the journal Science--also incorrectly predicted that several years over the past decade would see record heat. The paper says: “…predict further warming during the coming decade, with the year 2014 predicted to be 0.30° ± 0.21°C [5 to 95%

Billionaire carbon trader Al Gore has thrown away the last remnants of his credibility by appearing on a platform with Australia´s most notorious mining magnate Clive Palmer to celebrate the end of Australia´s carbon tax. Palmer is also a Senator whose party--Palmer United Party--holds the balance of power in the new Australian senate, which he is exploiting by holding Prime Minister Tony Abbott´s administration to ransom. One of Abbott´s main electoral promises was that he would repeal Australia´s hated carbon tax. However, Palmer has said he will vote with the government on the measure provided it retains various green policies

Royal Navy frigate forced to intercept

A Royal Navy patrol ship tracked down and intercepted two Russian landing craft in the English Channel yesterday. HMS Severn, a 1,700-tonne River-class patrol ship armed with three machine guns, headed off the two military vessels sailing east through the Channel. The ship ´closed and tracked´ the Russian craft as they, which are thought to have been moving from the Mediterranean back to their home bases. A Royal Navy spokesman said that the encounter was part of ´a well-established and standard response´. Navy vessels have met Russian ships in the Channel several times this year already.

The Supreme Court on Thursday limited the president´s power to fill high-level vacancies with temporary appointments, ruling in favor of Senate Republicans in their partisan clash with President Barack Obama. The high court´s first-ever case involving the Constitution´s recess appointments clause ended in a unanimous decision holding that Obama´s appointments to the National Labor Relations Board in 2012 without Senate confirmation were illegal. Obama invoked the Constitution´s provision giving the president the power to make temporary appointments when the Senate is in recess. Problem is, the court said, the Senate was not actually in a formal recess when Obama acted.

You may soon get a call from your doctor if you’ve let your gym membership lapse, made a habit of picking up candy bars at the check-out counter or begin shopping at plus-sized stores. That’s because some hospitals are starting to use detailed consumer data to create profiles on current and potential patients to identify those most likely to get sick, so the hospitals can intervene before they do. Information compiled by data brokers from public records and credit card transactions can reveal where a person shops, the food they buy, and whether they smoke. The largest hospital chain in

In November, Americans will vote in their midterm elections. Republicans are almost certain to retain control of the House of Representatives, so if they can also take control of the Senate, they´ll probably render President Obama a lame duck. But will President Obama’s present political difficulties (his approval rating is plummeting) assist Republican candidates? It´s a complex story. Assessing months of polling data, it’s clear that the 2014 Senate elections are more insulated from national politics than is commonly believed. Take Arkansas. Here, in a state that went for Romney by 61pc to Obama’s 37pc, the incumbent Democrat, Senator Mark

The prime minister of Iraq has confirmed to BBC Arabic that Syria carried out air strikes on militants inside Iraqi territory this week. Nouri Maliki said Syrian fighter jets had bombed militant positions around the border town of Qaim on Tuesday. While Iraq did not ask for the raid, he added, it "welcomed" any such strike against the Islamist group Isis. Isis and its Sunni Muslim allies have seized large parts of Iraq this month including the second city, Mosul.

With a surprisingly wide margin of victory, Congressman James Lankford won the Oklahoma Republican U.S. Senate primary, defeating former Speaker of the State House of Representatives T.W. Thad Cochran’s political resurrection began with a campaign shakeup and ended with a Hail Mary television ad. Just three weeks ago, in the dead of night on June 3, the Mississippi senator’s staff sat shaken and dejected, crestfallen at the results of a primary that deprived the six-term incumbent of an electoral majority. With Cochran forced into a runoff fight against an aggressive and energetic challenger, a dark mood shadowed his backers in Washington and Mississippi.Yet almost immediately, the Cochran coalition began bouncing back. Even on that gloomy night of June 3, Cochran adviser Stuart Stevens was insisting to staffers: “We’re

National conservative groups are angry after incumbent Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran pulled off a victory in the state’s GOP run-off — likely because of his campaign’s outreach to Democratic voters. “It’s disgraceful that self-described GOP leaders like Mitch McConnell, John McCain, the Chamber of Commerce and the NRSC would champion a campaign platform of pork barrel spending and insider deal-making, while recruiting Democrats to show up at the polls,” Matt Kibbe of FreedomWorks said after the results came in. Tuesday’s closely-watched run-off came after conservative state Sen. Chris McDaniel edged Cochran in votes in the initial election earlier this month.

Republicans are in the strongest position to win back the Senate since losing it eight years ago. Over several months, the party has expanded its range of targeted seats, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has helped defeat insurgents it didn’t want representing the GOP in the midterm elections. This sober realization came to Democrats on Wednesday, as Tuesday night’s primary results showed they cannot count on Tea Party candidates upsetting more-electable incumbents. And Democrats are increasingly realizing that President Obama’s approval rating will probably remain mired at 45 percent or lower until
