Casual marijuana use linked with
brain abnormalities, study finds

Fox News, by Loren Grush

Original Article

Casual marijuana use may come with some not-so-casual side effects. For the first time ever, researchers at Northwestern University have analyzed the relationship between casual use of marijuana and brain changes – and found that young adults who used cannabis just once or twice a week showed significant abnormalities in two important brain structures. The study’s findings, to be published Wednesday in the Journal of Neuroscience, are similar to those of past research linking chronic, long-term marijuana use with mental illness and changes in brain development. Dr. Hans Breiter, co-senior study author, said he was inspired to look at the effects of casual

Comments:
That´s not at all surprising. Why do you think Soros and those like him want to legalize all drugs? So you have a bunch of mindless idiots who can´t function normally. This study was done on patients between the ages of 18 and 25. Imagine the damage to the brains of those who are younger and the brain is still maturing. The speed with which the passing of marijuana laws has occurred is really startling. It´s just another disastrous leftist law that is destroying our society, like all the other things they foist upon us.

"Casual marijuana use"?

Repeating self-poisoning with a neurotoxin a few hundred times a year doesn´t seem to me to be very "causal".

At first, I thought this was going to be another fMRI study and was fully prepared to poo-poo it. Having worked many years in a lab that did fMRI in monkeys, I can tell you that technique is largely smoke-and-mirrors, statistical voodoo, and can be used to prove anything. This study, however, is based on anatomical MRI, which is pretty solid stuff and the data are much harder to manipulate to give researchers the results they expect. Moreover, the fact that the effects are dose-dependent makes this a particularly convincing study. Makes me glad that I was one of those people never got a buzz off the green stuff, just anxious and paranoid - which isn´t particularly reinforcing.

The link of marijuana use to schizophrenia is apparent in two members of our adopted son´s family - it affected his half sister who didn´t know anything about the birth mother´s history. The birth mother´s brain is now too scrambled for her ever to function independently outside of an institution. Is it possible there is a female hereditary predisposition? or did lightning just strike twice?

If I might, as a retired neuroscientist, offer a couple of comments with regard to the above post. Yes, there is a strong hereditary component to schizophrenia, though the link is poorly understood. Symptoms, however, usually don´t begin to appear until the late teens, hence the impression that some external factor ´caused´ it, such as stress or drug use. Given schizophrenics´ strong tendency to ´self-medicate´ with alcohol, nicotine and street drugs, I´d think it more likely in the case the poster mentions that marijuana use was a symptom, rather than a cause, of the disease in the individuals mentioned.

Just yesterday here in Denver, a man who´d eaten marijuana edibles shot and killed his wife. She was on the phone with the police at the time. A few weeks back, a college student on marijuana edibles jumped off a balcony and killed himself.

Don´t tell me pot is harmless. We´ll probably see more before sanity is restored to Colorado, if it ever is.

My son is a college student and about a year ago he remarked, (unprompted I might add) that he saw many students take up pot and become useless. They didn´t study, they didn´t go to class, they didn´t do things they committed to doing. He said this was an abrupt change from the way they were before they started smoking pot.

Marijuana is to the United States as vodka is to Russia. It is a societal pacifier used by big government to control you. It achieves the goal without the stigma of doing something illegally and it´s not alcohol. You want to be a free people. Keeps your wits about you. Stay away from all mind-altering substances. Embrace life with a clear head. You won´t regret it.

Back in 1971 there was a paper (in Lancet, I think) that claimed more or less the same thing. Nothing more came of it. Is marihuana more hazardous than alcohol? If there were good evidence of that it would have come up in the last 40 years. A double standard has lost its credibility with lots of people.
This news story looks suspiciously like a last-ditch effort by allies of the criminal justice industry to keep some criminal laws on the books.

A personal observation. My son was a straight A student in elementary school and was excited by many things. Then, just after his 13th birthday, his older sister and his niece died in a house fire. His niece(my granddaughter) had been fighting Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and just happened to be born on my son´s 6th birthday. She was very special to him. Shortly after this happened, he started smoking pot and his life went to hell in a basket. He had no interest in school or any other activities he used to enjoy. My wife and I did everything we could think of to help him and spent a small fortune as a result. Nothing seemed to help. But, something caused him to stop using pot. And that seemed to turn his life around. I did get to see him graduate from HS and now he has a good job, a nice girl friend, and lives a good life. And he now looks to his future and planning a retirement, etc. (I personally believe the was the intervention of GOD as there were many prayers said for him). So, anyone that tells me that smoking pot is not harmful, I will tell them that they simply don´t know what they are talking about. All the spout is what the other pot heads spout as if it were gospel. I´ve seen and lived the actual results of pot on a young person. And it isn´t pretty.

Even though this thread has scrolled over to about page 37, I notice somebody asked a good question regarding an earlier post of mine: "could marijuana trigger schizophrenia in those so predisposed". The short answer is "I don´t know". My intuitive feeling is "probably not", but that it would certainly exacerbate the symptoms of the disease, which include social and emotional disengagement. I don´t believe enough is really known the disease at this time to give a more definitive answer. Incidentally, I have three step-siblings affected to various degrees by schizophrenia and autism. Their mother was also institutionalized.

I truly believe academia is as corrupt as the enemedia...90% easily, ask David Horowitz, therefore, I am hesitant to believe anything they "study", especially at Northwestern!

I´ll call this study "b.s."....

They were all probably drinking shots and chasing it with beers during their so-called "study"...

Don´t be so quick to judge, I know professionals whose lives would completely destroy this "study" and you wouldnt even know that they were 30 or 40 year smokers and never touched a drink...To each their own, all in moderation, is what I say...isn´t that fair? Aren´t we still "free" here??? Or will I now be audited for my beliefs?

It´s the only mind altering plant that you can grow in your back yard that has been a medicating pain reliever for over 5,000 (FIVE THOUSAND) recorded in stone years, NOT addictive (habit forming of course like a lot of things), it has no agonizing pain causing withdrawal characteristics, like all the other mind altering, manufactured, substances. You can smoke it, put it in cookies and chill out. Like any other mind altering thing, wine and beer for example, it´s just no good using it all day every day. Unless you want to be stoned all the time. The medical benefits, as prescribed by doctors, are miraculous. Also, try cannabis farming for all the superior products it will start producing on a grand scale. The best, durable thread and paper imaginable. On and on.

Remember, after these prohibition laws are all cleared up, the next phase will be legalizing all the other chemicalized drugs
and distributing them at LOW cost to the addicts, and eliminating the massive criminal underworld our government has given us, worse than the old alcohol prohibition days by 100 times. Our police state armed enforcement has kept the price so high that Mexico has gone totally corrupt upside down trying to supply drugs into the US with and without the help of our own cartel. All of this has to stop, if only to save Mexico, and the gang killings in our streets, too.

For once, I´m seemingly on the same page as #25.

In addition, the raft of anecdotal scare stories about instant violent criminality and long term brain damage from marijuana use recall uncannily 1936´s hilariously absurd Reefer Madness. These reports also sound eerily similar to the increasingly hysterical warnings (based on computer models) of Greens on climate change. Medical science has a long way to go before it groks much of what happens inside the human brain. I don´t recommend any intoxicant, especially for children and teenagers, but this profusion of horror stories about marijuana users just has a bad odor about it. I don´t buy it.

What is this "pain reliever" BS?
As I remember back in the ´70s, before I quit the stuff, if I had a sprained ankle and got stoned it hurt every bit as much. I was just too lazy to move after smoking.
Best thing (well, one of) I ever did for my life was quit. Being stoned was like having a wet towel wrapped around your head while wading through hip deep water all the time. Soon after quitting everything got easier to do, I could think faster, clearer, I had more and better ideas, more ambition and forethought.
Turn your brain down enough and it may seem like there´s less pain but that´s just because there´s less everything.

The central weakness of the Republican´s political position in Washington has been on vivid display as the situation at the southern border has devolved into a complete crisis. As tens of thousands of foreign nationals overwhelm the border and render our sovereign boundary meaningless, Republicans in DC are tinkering with legislative fixes they say will address the situation. As if the crisis at the border is the result of some drafting error or a failure to enact some specific law relevant to this precise set of circumstances. It is a fool´s errand. Republicans, especially in DC, can always be lured by

The U.S. deported Honduran children as young as 1-1/2 years old on Monday in the first flight since President Obama pledged to speed up the process of sending back illegal immigrant minors from Central America. Fleeing violence and poverty, record numbers of children from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala have crossed into the United States over the past year, sparking intense debate about how to solve the problem. Monday´s flight from New Mexico to San Pedro Sula, the city with the highest murder rate in the world, returned 17 Honduran women, as well as 12 girls and nine boys, aged

The Obama administration quietly announced on Tuesday that it intends to change the way Americans learn about natural disasters and other major emergencies during radio and TV broadcasts, giving the president the ability to flip a switch and address the entire nation at once. The Emergency Alert System, the latest version of a program first established in 1951, blasts out emergency messages in the event of local weather emergencies, but can also be used to warn Americans about terror attacks and major natural disasters. [Snip] It can take up to 10 minutes for every radio, TV, cable and satellite provider to

In his message to the “Mexico/Holy See Colloquium on Migration and Development,” Pope Francis characterized the tens of thousands of illegal immigrants that have crossed the U.S. southern border as a product of globalization, suggesting that the phenomenon is happening worldwide. Francis proclaimed, “Despite the large influx of migrants present in all continents and in almost all countries, migration is still seen as an emergency, or as a circumstantial and sporadic fact, while instead it has now become a hallmark of our society and a challenge.” Emmer McCarthy for Vatican Radio said Francis expressed his concern for “the tens of thousands of

The First Lady of these United States has declared war on Chick-fil-A. It seems the home of plump juicy breasts and hot buttered buns has run afoul of the new Smart Snacks in School program. The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School. They’ve just learned they will no longer be allowed to buy Chick-fil-A

“Trust” is for Con Men: The reaction to the border chaos in Texas has accomplished one thing: It has exploded the lie at the heart of current “comprehensive” immigration reform plans. The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security. John McCain, an immigration hawk. Who knew? Mr. McCain, the highest-profile Republican of the U.S. Senate’s “Gang of Eight” that came up with amnesty as the solution to the immigration crisis — and it truly is a crisis — is finally taking a hard line against President Obama for his encouraging the tidal wave of illegal aliens swamping the southwestern border. “There has to be a halt to this,” Mr. McCain thundered Sunday on CNN. “That’s what we want, and the best way to do that is for planeloads of these young people to be returning to their country of origin

Contrary to what those who defend the right to own high-powered assault rifles believe, not all guns are created equal. Due to a combination of availability, portability and criminal usage the following five types of guns are the country's most dangerous. School Shootings: Widely Reported Tragedies Since 2000 - Using firearm trace data from the ATF, as well as FBI homicide records, we determined the types of guns most often recovered from crime scenes and/or used in murders. The numbers are stark: According to the FBI's 2012 Crime in the US data, nearly 70 percent of homicides for which the FBI received weapons data involved the use

It had to come sometime, and it came in one very bad week for the Democrats: that the many big problems with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama finally grew too great for the press to ignore. Obama in his own different way is heading towards Nixon-like levels of weirdness, as, beaten down by the failures regarding his ventures, he appears to have quit his own job. A.B. Stoddard of the Hill says in effect he has stopped being president and chooses to live in a world of his own, shutting out the problems that have become overwhelming, giving dinners where he talks

Senate Budget Committee ranking member Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) has warned all of his colleagues in Congress that President Barack Obama’s new immigration strategy—his plans to legalize millions of illegal alien adults through executive power—could destroy America as we know it. “I write to inform you of a development that threatens the foundation of our constitutional Republic,” Sessions, Congress’s top immigration hawk, wrote in a letter that was hand-delivered to all 535 members of Congress on Monday and provided exclusively to Breitbart News. Sessions cites a recent report from the National Journal, in which reporter Major Garrett detailed how, despite the ongoing

Attorney General Eric Holder encouraged Americans not to forget race while working for justice and equality in their country. “As it stands, our society is not yet color blind -- nor should it be -- given the disparities that still afflict and divide us.” Holder explained, “We must be color brave, and we must never forget that all are made better and more prosperous if all are given equal opportunities.” Holder made his remarks during a speech at Howard University on Tuesday for the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Civil Rights Act. “We must take into account not only the

WASHINGTON — It was an enduring image of his presidency: a chastened Bill Clinton walking his dog while wife Hillary keeps her distance as the family leaves town at the height of the Monica Lewinsky scandal — but it was all part of a contrived public-repentance campaign, according to a new book. With Bill on the skids and his wife’s future prospects on the line, it was necessary for the pubic to see the president being punished, said Weekly Standard online editor Daniel Halper in his new book, “Clinton, Inc.: The Audacious Rebuilding of a Political Machine.” “They understood that
