U.S. military on high alert as
Ukraine troops trade gunfire
with pro-Russian militants

Washington Times (D.C.), by Dave Boyer

U.S. military assets in the Black Sea are on high alert amid reports Ukraine troops traded gunfire Tuesday with pro-Russian militants. A journalist with Associated Press reported intense gunfire at an airport in eastern Ukraine after the government sent in army troops to retake control from militiamen loyal to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The mayor of Kramatorsk told the Associated Press that Ukrainian troops have now occupied the military airport and are blocking its entrance. The action comes a day after the revelation a Russian fighter jetted buzzed a U.S.S. destroyer multiple times over the Black Sea.

Has our commander in chief told them to stand by with white flags?

What US military "assets" in the Black Sea? Other than a lone Navy destroyer that was buzzed by a Russia jet yesterday, we have absolutely nothing in the region. Article makes it seem that our Asset in Chief has a Marine expeditionary force ready to deploy in Odessa when in fact we have a total of 15,000 troops to project US weakness to all of Europe, the ME and Africa.

Worse, these troops do not have a single M-1 Abrams tank to project US power. Obama removed our last tank unit just over 12 months ago. We are essentially powerless in face of Russia´s far larger ground and air forces.

Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl´s long road to recovery took another step forward Sunday when military officials announced that the former prisoner-of-war had become an outpatient at the Texas military base where he is being treated. Bergdahl, 28, had been receiving inpatient treatment at the Brooke Army Medical Center at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio. Now, U.S. Army officials said, he is receiving outpatient care at the base. "His reintegration process continues with exposure to more people and a gradual increase of social interactions," the Army said in a statement. MANAUS, Brazil — There have been more important games for U.S. Soccer. The 1989 qualifier in Trinidad and Tobago that put the Americans back in the World Cup for the first time in 40 years, four years before they would host the tournament. The win against tournament favorite Colombia in ‘94 that gave the U.S. its first World Cup victory since 1950. The group game against star-studded Portugal in 2002 that launched the Americans on their run to the quarterfinals. None, however, is bigger than Sunday night’s game against Portugal. It has emerged over the last few days that at the time of Lois Lerner’s hard drive crash, the IRS had a contract with a company called Sonasoft (“Email archiving done right.”) Sonasoft promoted its relationship with the IRS in 2009: “If the IRS uses Sonasoft products to backup their servers why wouldn’t you choose them to protect your servers?” So why doesn’t that solve the problem of the missing IRS emails? Because the IRS canceled its contract with Sonasoft in September 2011, a couple of months after Lerner’s hard drive crash. Everyone seems to assume that Sonasoft would have

Media blogger Erik Wemple at The Washington Post relayed that Bill Clinton punished Jay Leno for cracking a good pile of Monica Lewinsky jokes, despite sending the former president an expensive bicycle as a make-amends gift. That’s a revelation that comes from a New York Post roundup of a new book by Leno staffer Dave Berg (Behind the Curtain: An Insider’s View of Jay Leno’s Tonight Show). President Bill Clinton was Berg’s white whale. After many rebuffs, the show sent him a $12,000 custom-made tandem bicycle as a get-well gift after his triple-bypass surgery. It was returned, because Hillary, then

Washington- One U.S. lawmaker firmly believes the United States should keep its sons and daughters out of Iraq´s increasingly tangled and bloody conflict. "I´m not willing to send my son into that mess," Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, told CNN chief political correspondent Candy Crowley on Sunday. Appearing on "State of the Union," Paul acknowledged that while the chaos in Iraq intensifies by the day, he believes advances by jihadist Sunni militants on Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki´s Shiite government forces do not pose an immediate threat to U.S. national security. Though he refused to rule out some kind of U.S. assistance, Paul

He told taxpayers to walk the plank — and now he’s dressing the part. Mayor Bill de Blasio suited up as a pirate for Coney Island’s Mermaid Parade on Saturday — one day after pushing through a massive $75 billion city budget. Clutching a sword and sporting a skull-and-crossbones cap, Buccaneer Bill channeled his inner booty bandit as he marched alongside his family of blue-painted scallywags at the annual parade. His scoundrel-of-the-sea costume dripped with irony, critics charged. “You could call it a pirate theory. It’s finding a way to reach into the pockets of people who have worked hard

WASHINGTON — After getting battered by critics for failing to confront a full-blown crisis at the US border, the White House rolled out a new plan to stem the flood of women and children crossing illegally that included ankle bracelets to monitor the migrants. Other measures announced Friday would add judges, lawyers, and asylum officers to quickly process the human tide that has overwhelmed the immigration service and Border Patrol. Central American nations also would receive nearly $100 million in funding to help combat the problem. “We are surging our enforcement resources,” said Obama’s domestic policy adviser Cecilia Muñoz.

At the end of the Civil War, but before the pernicious reach of Jim Crow undermined the Union Army’s battlefield victory, former slaves and free blacks found themselves in possession of a most precious right -- the right to vote. It didn’t matter if a man had been a war hero in the famed, all-black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment or a house servant in a Southern plantation. All that mattered was that he was a man. To say that this development didn’t sit well with the progressive-minded women of this country is an understatement. The South Dakota Republican Party state convention passed a resolution calling for the impeachment of President Barack Obama Saturday. The resolution says Obama has "violated his oath of office in numerous ways." It specifically cites the release of five Taliban combatants in a trade for captive U.S. soldier Bowe Bergdahl, Obama´s statement that people could keep insurance companies, and recent EPA regulations on power plants. "Therefore, be it resolved that the South Dakota Republican Party calls on our U.S. Representatives to initiate impeachment proceedings against the president of the United States," the resolution reads. By 10 p.m. on Sept. 11, 2012, when Hillary Clinton received a call from President Obama, she was one of the most thoroughly briefed officials in Washington on the unfolding disaster in Benghazi, Libya. (Snip) She had no doubt that a terrorist attack had been launched against America on the anniversary of 9/11. However, when Hillary picked up the phone and heard Obama’s voice, she learned the president had other ideas in mind. With less than two months before Election Day, he was still boasting that he had al?Qaeda on the run. If the truth about Benghazi became known, it would blow that argument out of the water.

I still think President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii, even though for 14 years he allowed his literary agent to circulate a bio blurb stating he was born in Kenya, and even though for many years he attended a church where his pastor friend shouted such things as “God damn America!” I still think that he just pretended to be Kenyan to be cool, to sell books and, perhaps, to get a foreign student scholarship at those colleges from which he refuses to release his transcripts. He’s probably not actually Kenyan. But as I speculated

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) cancelled its longtime relationship with an email-storage contractor just weeks after ex-IRS official Lois Lerner’s computer crashed and shortly before other IRS officials’ computers allegedly crashed. Call it Paul Ryan’s finest hour. It’s a video of the congressman from Wisconsin confronting the commissioner of Internal Revenue over the missing Lois Lerner emails. It’s easy to see why the clip is going viral on the Web. It is one of those rare moments when Congress loses its temper and a major figure says what the American people are thinking. They don’t believe Commissioner John Koskinen is telling the truth. They don’t believe him. Mr. Koskinen protested. No one believed that either. Mr. Ryan’s ire was triggered by the suggestion of one of the Democrats that Mr. Koskinen

The decision this past week by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to rescind federal trademark protections for the Redskins may ultimately tip the balance in the controversy over the 80-year-old name of Washington’s football team. If so, that would be a shame. Not because there’s insufficient reason to consider the name “disparaging to Native Americans,” as the patent office determined. Many of us recoil at the reference to skin color as a team identity. The problem is that the Redskins case is just the latest example of a federal agency going beyond its brief to inappropriately insert itself in

All the time I was growing up in Atlanta, the face of Robert E. Lee was taking shape on the side of an enormous granite mountain just outside town. He loomed like a god above us, as much a presence as any deity, and God knows he was accepted as such. It was only much later that I began to question his sanctity, and then to hate what he stood for. When I was in elementary school, the face of Lee on Stone Mountain was a rough-cut thing, weathering and wasting as the generation that began it in 1912—a generation

Outwardly, they put on a show of unity — but privately, the Obamas and Clintons, the two power couples of the Democrat Party, loathe each other. “I hate that man Obama more than any man I’ve ever met, more than any man who ever lived,” Bill Clinton said to friends on one occasion, adding he would never forgive Obama for suggesting he was a racist during the 2008 campaign. The feeling is mutual. Obama made excuses not to talk to Bill, while the first lady privately sniped about Hillary. On most evenings, Michelle Obama and her trusted adviser, Valerie Jarrett, met in a quiet corner of the White House residence.

The least loved institution in America today is the U.S. Senate, and one of the reasons it is reviled is a zero-sum approach to women´s medical care. It´s time we changed that and adopt modern policies that make sense instead of using women´s medical issues as an election-year power play. One of the most rational ways for Washington to break this gridlock is to approve oral contraception for over-the-counter purchases by adults. Since "the pill" was first approved 44 years ago, it´s been one of the most proven and tested pharmaceuticals of our time. It is safe, reliable, effective, and presents
