Up to 11 people are believed dead after airborne Ukrainian troops seized an airport in the country´s rebellious east today in the first sign that a promised ´anti-terror operation´ had begun against pro-Russian separatists. Heavy gunfire was heard at Kramatorsk airport as Ukraine´s interim president announced that his forces had retaken the site from militants who been seizing control of cities since last week. Local media reported between four to 11 deaths in the attack, but there was no immediate confirmation of any casualties. Russia said it was ´deeply concerned´ over reports of casualties in the region today. It comes

I keep hearing that Russian troops are amassed near the border with Ukraine. At some point I suspect they will be pouring in.

Boko Haram militants have abducted 60 more girls and women and 31 boys from villages in northeast Nigeria, reports claim. The apparent kidnapping in Kummabza, 95 miles from Borno state capital Maiduguri, is minutes from Chibok, where more than 200 schoolgirls were taken hostage on April 15. It has renewed fears over the safety of civilians amid a military state of emergency that has failed to curtail near-daily attacks by Boko Haram fighters. Security forces denied the kidnappings. Nigeria´s government and military have been widely criticized for their slow response to the schoolgirls´ abduction more than two months ago.

Yesterday the Mail revealed the terrible treatment meted out to great-grandmother Lily Dove, who has been told she can no longer visit her local GP. The surgery said it is unable to cope with a surge in the local population, many of them workers from Eastern Europe, so was ‘de-registering’ 1,500 patients. Mrs Dove--who has lived in the area since 1919--will find it enormously difficult to travel to another doctor three miles away. But, unbelievably, her GP in Watton, Norfolk, said that making an exception for the 95-year-old widow, and allowing her to remain on the books, would be ‘discriminatory’.

Thousands of patients are being arbitrarily struck off by GPs who say they can no longer cope with spiralling numbers. Doctors warned last night that a recruitment crisis has left surgeries with too few staff. [Snip] Yesterday the Daily Mail highlighted the case of 95-year-old Lily Dove, one of 1,500 patients randomly struck off by a surgery in Watton, Norfolk, which is under pressure from rising immigration and retirees. The widow, who has lived in the area since 1919 and remembers when the doctor would visit her family in a horse and trap, has a number of health problems.

Joe Biden sought to make political capital out of presidential rival Hillary Clinton’s recent gaffes about her wealth by claiming that he ‘has no savings account’. However, financial records shows that he’s not quite the man of the people he claims to be, with a savings account worth between $1,001 and $15,000. The 2013 financial disclosure he made in May also indicates that the Vice President and his wife, Dr Jill Biden, are worth between $1,323,970 and $162,996. Dick Harpootlian, a former Democratic Party chairman in South Carolina, also smelt blood after Hillary Clinton’s gaffes. He framed his insult in terms the fictional

Hank Paulson, the former US Treasury Secretary who helped transform the 2008 crash from a temporary crisis into a long-running, still-unresolved disaster, has now turned his expertise to the subject of climate change. [Snip] Looking back at the dark days of the financial crisis in 2008, it is easy to see the similarities between the financial crisis and the climate challenge we now face. This is a bit like the Captain of the Titanic returning from his watery grave to tell us: "Trust me. I have experience of managing disasters. That´s why I´m just the man you want to appoint

Scientists at two of the world’s leading climate centres - NASA and NOAA - have been caught out manipulating temperature data to overstate the extent of the 20th century "global warming". The evidence of their tinkering can clearly be seen at Real Science, where blogger Steven Goddard has posted a series of graphs which show "climate change" before and after the adjustments. When the raw data is used, there is little if any evidence of global warming and some evidence of global cooling. However, once the data has been adjusted - ie fabricated by computer models - 20th century ´global warming´ suddenly

There are times that I have senior moments and forget certain names and events but after the recent Obama Iraq war implosion, I´m convinced most political pundits are suffering from them as well. What is unusual is that this revision of history is being committed by conservatives who should know better. Recent commentary by Glenn Beck, George Will and Charles Krauthammer indicate that they have significant memory lapses about why we went to war in Iraq. They now suggest that it was a wrong decision whereas my complaint is that we took too long to invade and oust Saddam Hussein.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) cancelled its longtime relationship with an email-storage contractor just weeks after ex-IRS official Lois Lerner’s computer crashed and shortly before other IRS officials’ computers allegedly crashed. All the time I was growing up in Atlanta, the face of Robert E. Lee was taking shape on the side of an enormous granite mountain just outside town. ‘R-E-S-P-E-C-T,” the song goes. It is easy enough to spell, but for some vocal critics of President Barack Obama, it seems exceedingly hard to do. As the president moves toward the land of the lame ducks, his political enemies are calling for blood. That’s no shocker at this stage of a presidency. In this case, the cuts go deeper. For some, it is not enough to disagree. Some high-status public figures seem determined to demean, denigrate and ridicule the president of the United States. On June 12 the Speaker of the U.S. House stepped to a podium and insulted Obama for his handling of

Noted management expert and Internal Revenue Service Commissioner John Koskinen was apparently called out of retirement — like the Ted Williams of evasive, unapologetic bureaucrats — to destroy what is left of his agency’s credibility. At immediate issue is two years of subpoenaed e-mails from former IRS official Lois Lerner to outside agencies, lost in a convenient computer crash. The possible involvement of other agencies is one focus of a congressional investigation into the heightened IRS scrutiny of conservative nonprofit groups before the 2012 election. In recent congressional testimony, Koskinen admitted that the e-mails

US Secretary of State John Kerry has arrived in Iraq´s capital, Baghdad as Sunni insurgents expand their control of towns across north-western Iraq. In Egypt on Sunday, Mr Kerry warned that Sunni militants Isis´ "ideology of violence and repression is a threat not only to Iraq but to the entire region". On Sunday rebels--spearheaded by Isis militants--captured border crossings to Syria and Jordan. The strategically important airport in the northern Tal Afar has also fallen. The town controls the main road from the Syrian border to Mosul, Iraq´s second biggest city, which was captured by the rebels two weeks ago.
