Fur flies as US gets
to grips with feral cats

Washington - It´s Friday night in Eckington, a quiet residential corner of Washington, and the back alley is crawling with feral cats -- rich pickings for seasoned cat-trapper Marty King. "Here, kitty kitty kitty kitty," said King after setting four metal traps baited with flaked shrimp and fish cat food and lined with fresh newspapers. (Snip) Coast to coast, the Humane Society of the United States estimates there are as many as 50 million feral cats, or "community cats" as their advocates prefer to call them. That compares to 95.6 million cats kept as pets. For decades, standard procedure has

The woman, Marty, featured in the article helped me trap four feral or unsocialized cats at a construction site near where I work in Washington DC. I found a home in the countryside of Virginia where they could be relocated after being spayed/neutered/vaccinated (at my expense).

As for the numbers of birds killedby cats, both owned by people and ferals, I would aver that these same studies do not take into account the bird death by turbines, cars and other vehicles and habitat loss.

Taking away the feral cats will result in a devastating explosion of urban rats. Count on it.

Oh...and so now we´re going to give rats a bad name.

BTW-----

I was assigned to work with "Vector Control"
(Disease Control) in Iraq in ´04. We were tasked with trapping and killing anything that wasn´t human on a large airbase. Each morning we would collect the traps and ´dispatch the catch´.

Dogs and Hyenas go down with one shot. Dead.

Cats will keep scratching and clawing and fighting in spite of numerous rounds from a fully automatic SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon) It´s crazy to watch.
And, yes it was awful, but after you´ve seen young men die in battle cats don´t bother you very much.

The old saying about cats having ´nine lives´ is not without merit. They are predators of the first order.

Not unlike the fine young men of the USMC.

Semper Fi !

Hand to God, there is a cat sanctuary over on Maui. Send the kitties over there. Heck, I´d consider putting on a pair of whiskers and a tail if I thought I could go too.

Our small city had a problem with Feral cats. We supported an effort to trap them, have them spayed or neutered and returned to the sites they called home. (Suitable shelters from the elements were built) Problem solved in a humane way.

In 2000 I adopted one of those cats caught in a feral trap in DC. She is a beautiful cat with Siamese markings, white feet and gorgeous blue eyes. I adopted her from Alley Cat Allies in Fairfax and would like them to know I still have her fourteen years later. Kismet has been my buddy for all that time. Alley Cat Allies do a great job.

Mother Kitty was a feral cat who adopted me. She had found a way into my house through the foundation and demanded to be fed. I´d throw her out, but she could find her way back in.

Then she had her kittens in my closet. It was cute until she taught them how to get in and out of my house (eventually I had to have major work done to my foundation).

Her next several litters were born outdoors and were all feral. I felt responsible for them in a way, so I fed them. That brought even more feral cats.

There was a tough-looking, little tomcat who looked just like most of the new kittens. I suspect he was Mother Kitty´s live-in boy friend. I named him William Feral, in honor of the Swiss reformer.

Over time I trapped William and 25 other cats and had them neutered. He visited my porch regularly over a period of nearly three years. Finally, nearly blind and quite beat-up looking, he died this winter.

Mother Kitty disappeared March 16. I miss her.

I like the cats that hunt the feral rats in my neighborhood. As for birds, there are plenty of them. There used to be bird nests in my trees but 15 years ago, squirrels moved into the area and now there are none. There must be successful nests somewhere squirrel-proof. Unlike cats, squirrels really are delicious.

Some kind soul dropped several cats in our mobile home park. Before we knew it we had a lot more than a few. Some people couldn´t say no to the little kittens so people started feeding them. Then......cats all over! Let me tell you, once you feed a cat, it´s yours!

WASHINGTON – Has President Barack Obama “checked out”? It’s one thing if hardened critics like Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly ask whether the Obama presidency is “imploding,” as she did last month , citing a string of foreign policy debacles and domestic scandals. Or if Republican lobbyist Ed Rogers says Obama “seems to have taken something like an early retirement,” as he did in his Washington Post blog earlier this month, finding that the president’s recent speeches reveal “a state of mind that suggests he has checked out.” It is another, however, if the chief U.S. commentator for the Financial Times,

Washington — Is racial animosity behind some political criticism of the Obama administration? That’s what Attorney General Eric Holder said on Sunday. The exact phrase he used was “racial animus,” which he said motivates some of his and Obama’s political opponents. (Snip) At the right-leaning "Hot Air!" Noah Rothman used even tougher language. The Obama administration long ago perfected the art of cultivating the sense among its defenders that lingering racism inspires most of its critics, according to Mr. Rothman. If the US was still so racially sensitive, why did it reelect an African-American president?

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) has now controlled much of Iraq for over a month.
