Labor´s rhetoric vs. reality
Detroit News, by Richard Berman

Original Article

Last week’s Supreme Court decision in McCutcheon v. FEC struck down federal limits on the total amount individuals can contribute to combinations of federal candidates and parties during a two-year election cycle. Predictably, it unleashed a wrath of criticism from labor unions. But a comparison of their rhetoric to reality shows a little introspection is warranted before they call the kettle black. In the hours after McCutcheon was announced, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka stated, “The Supreme Court made one of the most undemocratic and corrosive decisions in history with the Citizen’s United (sic) ruling. Today, it has dangerously broadened its

The labor unions are unhappy because their opponents can now use the same payola methods that they have been using for years.

Hope vs Experience

Samuel Johnson once observed that second marriages were the “triumph of hope over experience”. Johnson might just as well have been talking about life in general. (Snip) But it’s not as if Obama has forgotten Russia. He’s apparently come up with a sure-fire scheme of reducing tensions with Moscow. “U.S. Eliminates Multi-Warheads on All Ground-Based Nuclear Missiles,” says the Global Security Newswire. That should mollify Putin and signal that America has no aggressive intentions. That’s his style. Obama likes to telegraph inaction. He ruled out military action in Ukraine, ruled out ground troops in Iraq and is now ruling out

Michelle Wie won the United States Women’s Open at Pinehurst No. 2 by two strokes on Sunday to capture the first major title of her career. Wie shot a final round 70 to finish at two-under-par 278 to beat out Stacy Lewis, who posted a 66. The title is the first for Wie, 24, a fixture on the United States Golf Association scene since qualifying for the Women’s Amateur at age 10. Her best Open finish was a tie for third in 2006, but she had not cracked the top 10 in nine previous starts. Twice she withdrew (2007 and

Myself, I’m a Diet Coke guy, and I can’t even picture myself switching to Pepsi. It’s almost pathological for me, part of my world view for some reason. Maybe you have the same rock-solid brand affinity for Pampers vs. Huggies, or Crest vs. Colgate. This thought came to mind as I was totally geeking out and reading some social psychology research about why people will stick to certain beliefs, even if presented with facts that prove their preconceived notions were incorrect. Turns out, we humans just don’t change our minds much, no matter how we like to think of ourselves

The way a stove top expresso maker works is by heating one chamber full of water and letting steam push coffee into the relative vacuum of another. (Snip) Will the fighting become general? Perhaps the better question is to ask why it should not become general for the same reasons that Slaughter already described. Whether in Eastern Europe or Asia, the same practice of neglect can be observed. In each place Obama has lit a pressure chamber and the steam has to go somewhere. In he Middle East, Syria/Iraq has now become the steam chamber, and if there is any

PORTLAND, Maine — A report that scientists are calling one of the most comprehensive studies of great white sharks finds that their numbers are surging in the ocean off the Eastern U.S. and Canada after decades of decline — bad news if you´re a seal, but something experts say shouldn´t instill fear in beachgoers this summer. The study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, published this month in the journal PLOS ONE, says the population of the notoriously elusive fish has climbed since about 2000 in the western North Atlantic. The scientists behind the study attribute the resurgence to

By converting the US Ship of State into a clown car Obama made himself a clown. And that is how Obama is being treated. TALLAHASSEE — Since leaving the governor’s mansion in 2010, Democrat Charlie Crist has more than doubled his net worth, with much of the money coming from prestigious positions and consulting contracts he received from large political donors. Some were helping Crist build his net worth while knowing that the Republican-turned-independent-turned-Democrat likely would run again for governor. In 2010, Crist listed his net worth at $466,063, a number that has jumped to $1.2 million, according to financial disclosure forms he filed Tuesday when submitting his official paperwork to get on the ballot as a candidate for governor. Crist said it

NBC’s Chuck Todd looks at the president’s polling and concludes it is disastrous for Obama, though not necessarily for for the Democratic Party. It is one of a series of messages disassociating the fortunes of the liberal enterprise from the collapsing presidency. The new point of departure is cooperating with Iran. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- An environmental group wants federal wildlife managers to revise a decades-old recovery plan for grizzly bears to ensure the animal´s return to more areas of the West. The Center for Biological Diversity filed its petition Wednesday with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It identifies more than 171 square miles in a handful of western states as suitable habitat for the bears. Those areas include a forested region straddling the Arizona-New Mexico border, the Grand Canyon, the Sierra Nevada in California and parts of Utah and Colorado. The recovery plan for grizzlies dates back to 1993. The

Henry was sentenced to death for murdering his wife in Zephyrhills in 1985. Your server keeps a copy of that e-mail, and of all your e-mails – sent and received. When you create all the folders in your e-mail program that you use to save e-mails in...these are also

At the end of the Civil War, but before the pernicious reach of Jim Crow undermined the Union Army’s battlefield victory, former slaves and free blacks found themselves in possession of a most precious right -- the right to vote. It didn’t matter if a man had been a war hero in the famed, all-black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment or a house servant in a Southern plantation. All that mattered was that he was a man. To say that this development didn’t sit well with the progressive-minded women of this country is an understatement. The South Dakota Republican Party state convention passed a resolution calling for the impeachment of President Barack Obama Saturday. The resolution says Obama has "violated his oath of office in numerous ways." It specifically cites the release of five Taliban combatants in a trade for captive U.S. soldier Bowe Bergdahl, Obama´s statement that people could keep insurance companies, and recent EPA regulations on power plants. "Therefore, be it resolved that the South Dakota Republican Party calls on our U.S. Representatives to initiate impeachment proceedings against the president of the United States," the resolution reads. However, when Hillary picked up the phone and heard Obama’s voice, she learned the president had other ideas in mind. I still think President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii, even though for 14 years he allowed his literary agent to circulate a bio blurb stating he was born in Kenya, and even though for many years he attended a church where his pastor friend shouted such things as “God damn America!” I still think that he just pretended to be Kenyan to be cool, to sell books and, perhaps, to get a foreign student scholarship at those colleges from which he refuses to release his transcripts. He’s probably not actually Kenyan. But as I speculated

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) cancelled its longtime relationship with an email-storage contractor just weeks after ex-IRS official Lois Lerner’s computer crashed and shortly before other IRS officials’ computers allegedly crashed. The IRS signed a contract with Sonasoft, an email-archiving company based in San Jose, California, each year from 2005 to 2010. The company, which partners with Microsoft and counts The New York Times among its clients, claims in its company slogans that it provides “Email Archiving Done Right” and “Point-Click Recovery.” Sonasoft in 2009 tweeted, “If the IRS uses Sonasoft products to backup their servers why wouldn’t you choose

Call it Paul Ryan’s finest hour. It’s a video of the congressman from Wisconsin confronting the commissioner of Internal Revenue over the missing Lois Lerner emails. It’s easy to see why the clip is going viral on the Web. It is one of those rare moments when Congress loses its temper and a major figure says what the American people are thinking. They don’t believe Commissioner John Koskinen is telling the truth. They don’t believe him. Mr. Koskinen protested. No one believed that either. Mr. Ryan’s ire was triggered by the suggestion of one of the Democrats that Mr. Koskinen

The decision this past week by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to rescind federal trademark protections for the Redskins may ultimately tip the balance in the controversy over the 80-year-old name of Washington’s football team. If so, that would be a shame. Not because there’s insufficient reason to consider the name “disparaging to Native Americans,” as the patent office determined. Many of us recoil at the reference to skin color as a team identity. The problem is that the Redskins case is just the latest example of a federal agency going beyond its brief to inappropriately insert itself in

All the time I was growing up in Atlanta, the face of Robert E. Lee was taking shape on the side of an enormous granite mountain just outside town. He loomed like a god above us, as much a presence as any deity, and God knows he was accepted as such. It was only much later that I began to question his sanctity, and then to hate what he stood for. When I was in elementary school, the face of Lee on Stone Mountain was a rough-cut thing, weathering and wasting as the generation that began it in 1912—a generation

Outwardly, they put on a show of unity — but privately, the Obamas and Clintons, the two power couples of the Democrat Party, loathe each other. “I hate that man Obama more than any man I’ve ever met, more than any man who ever lived,” Bill Clinton said to friends on one occasion, adding he would never forgive Obama for suggesting he was a racist during the 2008 campaign. The feeling is mutual. Obama made excuses not to talk to Bill, while the first lady privately sniped about Hillary. On most evenings, Michelle Obama and her trusted adviser, Valerie Jarrett, met in a quiet corner of the White House residence.

The least loved institution in America today is the U.S. Senate, and one of the reasons it is reviled is a zero-sum approach to women´s medical care. It´s time we changed that and adopt modern policies that make sense instead of using women´s medical issues as an election-year power play. One of the most rational ways for Washington to break this gridlock is to approve oral contraception for over-the-counter purchases by adults. Since "the pill" was first approved 44 years ago, it´s been one of the most proven and tested pharmaceuticals of our time. It is safe, reliable, effective, and presents
