Ukrainian president says it is ´war´ between

The Ukrainian president declared ´war´ between his country and Russia today after gunfire between pro-Moscow troops and Ukrainian special forces ended in the first fatalities of the conflict. The country´s interior minister Arsen Avakov said in a Facebook post a security service officer was killed near Slovyansk, east Ukraine. He also reported an unclear number of casualties among the militia. It is the first reported gun battle in the area--where armed men loyal to Moscow have seized a number of law enforcement buildings, including a police station, in recent days. Now, Ukraine´s authorities have said they plan to launch a ´full-scale anti-terrorist operation´

Radical Islamists from the Salafist sect of Islam are targeting Welsh students and prisoners, according to the WalesOnline newspaper. The story follows on from that of the jihadist student recruit whose father has publicly lamented his Nasser Muthana´s joining of the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (Isis) terrorist group this week. WalesOnline reports that the "ultra-conservative strand of Islam" is growing in popularity in Wales, with "up to six Welsh mosques" now part of the movement Haras Rafiq, of counter-extremism group Quilliam said: “The theology used to recruit these guys has its roots very much in Salafi jihadism. The prime minister of Iraq has confirmed to BBC Arabic that Syria carried out air strikes on militants inside Iraqi territory this week. Nouri Maliki said Syrian fighter jets had bombed militant positions around the border town of Qaim on Tuesday. While Iraq did not ask for the raid, he added, it "welcomed" any such strike against the Islamist group Isis. Isis and its Sunni Muslim allies have seized large parts of Iraq this month including the second city, Mosul.

The poster child for what Democrats claim is a GOP ´war on women´ lashed out at Hillary Clinton on Wednesday in exclusive comments to MailOnline, calling her ´hypocritical´ for defending a child rapist in 1975 and laughing about it in a taped interview. [Snip] Clinton was embarrassed ten days ago when the Washington Free Beacon published an audio interview from the early 1980s in which she chuckled about representing a man who raped a 12-year-old girl. She knew he was guilty, she said on the recording, but worked the legal system to limit his punishment to ´time served´--about two months

The number of Islamist extremists fighting for ISIS could double after al-Qaeda´s 15,000 strong offshoot in Syria is said to have pledged allegiance to the militant group. The merger is believed to have taken place in Albu Kamel - on the border of Syria and Iraq, where all of the crossings are currently in the hands of Sunni militia, many of them members of ISIS. In April the al-Nusra Front pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, who has previously condemned ISIS´ brutal attempts to establish an Islamic state in the Middle East as too extreme, so the development points

The US economy suffered its worst performance for five years in the first quarter of 2014, latest figures show. [Snip] This was worse than the previous estimate of a 1% contraction, and also worse than economists´ expectations for a fall in GDP of 1.7%. The unusually cold weather in the quarter has been blamed for the fall. The gap between the second and third estimates of US growth for the quarter is the largest on record. The latest revision came as a result of a weaker pace of healthcare spending than previously assumed, which caused a downgrading of the consumer

Some people have expressed surprise that I signed today’s letter, led by the former British ambassador to Iran Sir Richard Dalton, calling on Tony Blair to be fired as Middle East peace envoy. My reasons are as follows: first, in my view, Mr Blair has achieved almost nothing of any substance in this job. Secondly, there is troubling evidence that he has confused his private business interests with his public role as an envoy. Thirdly, Mr Blair’s own views on the Middle East--most recently his support for President Sisi--must surely disqualify him from such a sensitive role as peace envoy

939 days before Obama leaves office, the 2016 Presidential Campaign is well underway. Likely Republican candidates are raising money and shaking hands. Media coverage is growing. And Hillary Clinton is talking about her wealth. In a silly way. All of this began in early June, when Clinton told ABC News that her unsuccessful 2008 Presidential run had left her family "dead broke". Clinton then explained the struggle of paying multiple mortgages and Chelsea´s education fees. The story could have ended there. Instead, Clinton gave another interview in which she demanded media "context" for her earlier remarks. [Snip] Then, last weekend,

Plans to rename the street outside China’s Washington embassy in honour of its most famous political dissident have prompted joy among relatives and supporters of the jailed activist and fury among Communist Party officials. A congressional committee on Tuesday voted to change the Chinese embassy’s address to “Liu Xiaobo Plaza”--a tribute to the literary critic and dissident who has been in prison since 2009 for organising a “subversive” pro-democracy petition called Charter 08. The name change was “a way to highlight Liu’s unjust imprisonment,” said a statement posted on the website of Frank Wolf, the Republican congressman behind the initiative.

With a surprisingly wide margin of victory, Congressman James Lankford won the Oklahoma Republican U.S. Senate primary, defeating former Speaker of the State House of Representatives T.W. Lankford now becomes the prohibitive favorite to replace outgoing Senator Tom Coburn, who is retiring with two years remaining in his current term. This was a very different race from the one taking place in Mississippi. Thad Cochran’s political resurrection began with a campaign shakeup and ended with a Hail Mary television ad. Just three weeks ago, in the dead of night on June 3, the Mississippi senator’s staff sat shaken and dejected, crestfallen at the results of a primary that deprived the six-term incumbent of an electoral majority. With Cochran forced into a runoff fight against an aggressive and energetic challenger, a dark mood shadowed his backers in Washington and Mississippi.Yet almost immediately, the Cochran coalition began bouncing back. Even on that gloomy night of June 3, Cochran adviser Stuart Stevens was insisting to staffers: “We’re

National conservative groups are angry after incumbent Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran pulled off a victory in the state’s GOP run-off — likely because of his campaign’s outreach to Democratic voters. “It’s disgraceful that self-described GOP leaders like Mitch McConnell, John McCain, the Chamber of Commerce and the NRSC would champion a campaign platform of pork barrel spending and insider deal-making, while recruiting Democrats to show up at the polls,” Matt Kibbe of FreedomWorks said after the results came in. Tuesday’s closely-watched run-off came after conservative state Sen. Chris McDaniel edged Cochran in votes in the initial election earlier this month.
