How Google is transforming
power and politics

Washington Post, by Tom Hamburger & Matea Gold

In May 2012, the law school at George Mason University hosted a forum billed as a “vibrant discussion” about Internet search competition. Many of the major players in the field were there — regulators from the Federal Trade Commission, federal and state prosecutors, top congressional staffers. What the guests had not been told was that the day-long academic conference was in large part the work of Google, which maneuvered behind the scenes with GMU’s Law & Economics Center to put on the event. At the time, the company was under FTC investigation over concerns about the dominance of its famed search engine,

Sounds like 0bamaCare. One size search engine fits all, especially when they can track your keystrokes for "sinister" purposes.

[Updated] - Since Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy´s remarks to the New York Times — they began, “I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro" — Republicans who have expressed previous admiration and support for his standoff with the Bureau of Land Management have been mostly silent. Bundy has not paid grazing fees for his cattle, which number into the hundreds and have been on federal land illegally, for over two decades. However, more prominent Republican leaders who have made public and laudatory statements about Bundy have begun to backtrack. Expect the rest — if they want to keep their

Slavyansk, Ukraine - Ukraine´s military launched assaults to retake rebel-held eastern towns on Thursday in which up to five people were reported killed, a move Russian President Vladimir Putin warned would have "consequences". The offensive sent international tensions soaring and oil prices up, raising the prospect of Russia making good on its threat of a massive response in the ex-Soviet republic. (Snip) Putin called the armed operation a crime. "If Kiev has really begun to use the army against the country´s population... that is a very serious crime against its own people," he said, calling Kiev´s authorities a "junta".

McGregor,Texas - SpaceX released this video April 18 of a Falcon 9 Reusable (F9R) rocket making its first test flight. The rocket lifts off to a height of about 800 feet, hovers and returns for a landing in the video shot by an aerial drone. SpaceX has been working on a reusable spacecraft with its earlier experimental Grasshopper program. The Grasshopper can be seen in the background of this video. The wings on the Falcon 9 are fixed in the tests, but SpaceX will transition to wings stowed against the side of the rocket and extended just before landing. The company says it will also test the F9R at its site in New Mexico,

Russian President and 2005 Super Bowl champion Vladimir Putin told a media forum in St. Petersburg Thursday that the internet was a “CIA project.” Putin said that the series of tubes began as a CIA project and “is still developing as such,” adding that Russia needed to “fight for its influence” on the web. The comments come as the Kremlin tightens its grip on the internet within Russia. Just this week Russia’s parliament just passed a law requiring social networks to be Russian-based and save users’ information, while the founder of VKontakte, essentially Russia’s Facebook, quit and fled the country over Russia’s increasing control of

Edward M. Kennedy, endorsed then-Sen. Barack Obama in the 2008 race of the Democratic nomination, giving him a boost in his race against Mrs. Clinton. “I would like to see her run if that’s what she wants to do, I think she’d be great,” Mrs. Kennedy said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “That would be great.” Polls show that if Mrs. Clinton enters the race she would be the clear front-runner to win the 2016 Democratic nomination for president.

The administration Kabuki dance we’re witnessing featuring U.S. refusal to provide nonlethal support equipment for Ukraine is President Obama displaying the new “flexibility” he promised Vladimir Putin he would have after his re-election. In short, it is capitulation. The administration is trying to make the case that by showing restraint, Mr. Obma will encourage Mr. Putin, the Russian president, to be more willing to negotiate. The mind boggles. What’s taking place in Ukraine has far-reaching implications for the United States and our allies in both Europe and the Far East. President Obama commemorated on Thursday the massacre of 1.5 million Armenians in 1915, but he once again avoided using the word “genocide,” failing to keep a campaign pledge he made in 2008. “I have consistently stated my own view of what occurred in 1915, and my view has not changed,” Mr. Obama said, calling the episode “one of the worst atrocities of the 20th century.” The president’s statement implied that Turkey, a NATO member that vehemently disputes the genocide charge, would benefit from acknowledging the atrocity that occurred at the end of the Ottoman Empire. Washington - The Food and Drug Administration plans to begin regulating electronic cigarettes for the first time, banning sales to minors and requiring manufacturers to put health warnings on the nicotine-delivering devices that have become a multibillion-dollar industry, according to officials who described the agency´s proposal. But the agency will stop short of steps that many public health advocates and some members of Congress have called for, including restrictions on television advertisements and flavorings, such as pumpkin spice or chocolate, that may target younger consumers, officials said. The agency plans to announce the new rule Thursday.

The secret list was part of an elaborate scheme designed by Veterans Affairs managers in Phoenix who were trying to hide that 1,400 to 1,600 sick veterans were forced to wait months to see a doctor, according to a recently retired top VA doctor and several high-level sources. For six months, CNN has been reporting on extended delays in health care appointments suffered by veterans across the country and who died while waiting for appointments and care.

Public Trust: Sixty-one percent polled say President Obama lies "some of the time" or "most of the time" on matters of national importance. Americans have to ask: Why do we let him get away with it? The shock is that the same poll found his disapproval level down to its lowest since last fall. But his comments on Wednesday appeared to be more direct. Asked what his "immediate plans" were, he said, according to an attendee: "I´m thinking about running for president." But before Beckel got to his chart, Bolling took some time to “praise” President Barack Obama for what
