Obamacare taxes add
BILLIONS to rising premiums

On top of rising premiums, Obamacare taxes are adding hundreds of dollars per year onto customers’ costs, according to new study from the American Action Forum. Those who braved the health-care law’s exchanges will have to pay an extra $354 on average in 2014, reports the free-market D.C.-based think tank, just due to seven taxes included in Obamacare. The vast majority of the country covered by employer-sponsored health insurance will be forced to pay a somewhat lower tab of $196 to cover the taxes. Those with self-funded employer-sponsored insurance are exempt from several of the largest culprits and will have the lowest

ZippyCare is the largest tax increase in America´s history. Just ask John Roberts. It is rapidly sinking the economy into recession - just look at the stock markets this past week.

‘I Did it, Dad’: An Amazing Young
Lady Graduates From High School

Most of us take graduating from high school for granted. For others, it’s a challenge beyond anything we’ve ever experienced. One of those people is Katherine Clark of Columbia Station, Ohio: she was born with cerebral palsy and is considered a quadriplegic. Katherine not only graduated from high school Friday, she walked across the stage to receive her diploma. In addition to completing all of her coursework on time, Katherine sang in the choir, and competed in the Special Olympics and 4H. Throughout her young life, Katherine’s dad Vince always carried his “little girl” everywhere she went. Following his death in 2007,

Why Putin Says Russia Is Exceptional

In the winter of 2012, something surprising happened to Vladimir Putin: He discovered, as he wrote in a government newspaper, that Russia isn´t just an ordinary country but a unique "state civilization," bound together by the ethnic Russians who form its "cultural nucleus." This was something new. In his previous 12 years in office, first as Russia´s president and then as prime minister, Mr. Putin had generally stayed away from grand pronouncements on culture and ideology. And Mr. Putin wasn´t done with this theme. Elected in March 2012 to a third term as president—in the face of massive antiregime protests,

Secretary Shinseki worried too much. Nothing bad will happen now that he´s resigned. President Obama will continue to love him. Look at the above photo. Have you ever seen truer affection? It was taken on May 3, at the White House Correspondents’ dinner, some twenty-four days after Secretary Sibelius (she’s the one in the silvery dress and hair) resigned in what one thought was national disgrace. There’s no such thing anymore, at least in certain circles. In fact, we bet Mr. Shinseki will be Mr. Obama’s date at next year’s Correspondents’ dinner. Our photographers are on stand-by. As the countdown continued

The resignation of Secretary Eric Shinseki from the Veterans Affairs Department was probably unavoidable, under the principle that a leader should accept full responsibility for a great scandal. But the department’s problem was not Mr. Shinseki. It has been broken for years. No one should expect his removal to be anything but the beginning of a much-needed process of change. Time now to tune out the noise from the lawmakers who lately have been baying for Mr. Shinseki’s head. No doubt they will keep heaping abuse on President Obama, on the campaign trail, and at the hearings for whoever is nominated

I finally got around to reading Ta-Nehisi Coates’s case for reparations on the plane down to New Orleans (where I am now, working on a film; blogging may be even more sporadic than usual this summer). I’ve been eager to do so since I heard about it, both because I admire Coates as a writer and because I have always felt the discourse around reparations to be somewhat odd, skipping past the actual case presented and advancing immediately to a meta-analysis of why someone would make such an argument. And that oddness has very much extended to the reception of

Since its inception in 1916 as the nation’s first birth control clinic, Planned Parenthood has said it is fighting for the rights of women. That claim continues today, with Planned Parenthood fighting against pro-life regulations in numerous states because, they say, women are helped by abortion. From a Catholic perspective it is clear that Planned Parenthood’s pro-women rhetoric is a farce.(Snip)For a frame of reference, Planned Parenthood will kill six percent of the girls that American mothers will carry in 2014. And this is just the number owned up to by Planned Parenthood, since it counts some abortifacients as contraceptives.

A Texas court on Friday gave the green light to an arbitration case pitting Lance Armstrong against an insurance company that says the disgraced cyclist owes it $12 million. The ruling by the Texas Supreme Court means Armstrong could have to go under oath to answer live questions about his doping as soon as next month. The deposition would be part of an arbitration case with SCA Promotions, a Dallas-based company that subpoenaed Armstrong to testify about the Tour de France doping conspiracy he led. Barring an out-of-court settlement, the arbitration panel will convene June 30. Nearly two years have passed since Armstrong

To hear tell, the mean ol’ GOP is waging war on Michelle Obama and, brace yourself, America’s children. Got it? The newest war on women and children relates to the first lady’s well-intentioned but disastrous school nutrition program, otherwise known as the Dumpster Derby. First to good intentions: Kudos to Obama for recognizing and trying to address childhood obesity. If you think health care is expensive now, wait until these little human pillows reach adulthood and then, assuming their hearts hold out, advanced age. Assuming, too, that our bottom-line bureaucrats haven’t begun recycling high-maintenance humans by then. Might want to keep an eye

On Friday, VA chief Eric Shinseki finally publicly took charge of the scandal engulfing his agency. Three weeks ago, it might have been a campaign plan—instead of a valediction. In the closing remarks of a speech made in his final hours as VA Secretary, Eric Shinseki, the former four-star general, finally sounded like an officer in command. He took responsibility for “indefensible” corruption inside the VA, fired leaders he believed were behind it, and gave orders to triage the problem. Hours later, President Obama announced he had accepted Shinseki’s resignation and appointed a new acting secretary to head the VA. If Shinseki

Black Beach Week used to get all the glory: Every Memorial Day weekend, 300,000 black people gathered in Miami Beach to get their freak on. And also create a tsunami of violence, robbery, shootings, carjackings, vandalism, mayhem, noise and trash. But this year, many party-goers complained that Black Beach Week -- only reporters call it “Urban Beach Week” -- just wasn’t as much fun any more: Too many cops, tactical vehicles, helicopters, lights, towers, cameras, suspicion. DENVER— Colorado´s Civil Rights Commission on Friday ordered a baker to make wedding cakes for same-sex couples, finding his religious objections to the practice did not trump the state´s anti-discrimination statutes. The unanimous ruling from the seven-member commission upheld an administrative law judge´s finding in December that Jack Phillips violated civil rights law when he refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple in 2012. The couple sued. "I can believe anything I want, but if I´m going to do business here, I´d ought to not discriminate against people," Commissioner Raju Jaram said. Phillips, a devout Christian who

Day 1,956 of his presidency was not too kind to President Obama. Having to announce within a four-hour span that he had lost both an embattled Cabinet secretary and his chief spokesman, Obama looked Friday like a man gamely trying to get a stalled administration back on track. He entered the week still stuck with low approval ratings and facing fierce criticism of his policies both at home and abroad.
