Kathleen Sebelius’s Resignation Hands
Republicans A Golden Opportunity

The Federalist, by Ben Domenech

Kathleen Sebelius is resigning, and Rachel Maddow is right to not be happy about it, not one little bit. For once, I completely agree with Maddow’s analysis. This surprise resignation presents Republicans with an unexpected opportunity to refocus the conversation on Obamacare’s negatives, offers a chance to force vulnerable Senate Democrats to take a hard vote on Obamacare six months before the midterms, and serves to disrupt what had been a positive few days of media spin for the health care law into another conversation about its many failings. About a month ago, in a conversation with a Senate Democratic

I don´t want you people to miss something obvious...the timing of her forced resignation must mean that there is some horrible, outrageously bad news about obamacare about to break.

In Year Six of the Age of Obama, we seem to be destined to reliving the Carter administration. I have tried to make the case that we are in the Killer Rabbit phase or unwinding of the Age of Obama, when our Dear Leader becomes an object of mockery. With more than two years to go, however, a lot of damage remains to be done. In his commencement address at Notre Dame in May 1977, Jimmy Carter announced a shift in American foreign policy in the fourth month of his administration: “Being confident of our own future, we are now free

Ronald Reagan traded arms for hostages. Benjamin Netanyahu traded more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners for Corporal Gilad Shalit. Ehud Olmert traded five living terrorists–one of them responsible for killing a four-year-old girl by crushing her skull with the butt of his rifle–for two dead Israeli soldiers. (Snip)What I find offensive is that the president and his team are not treating this as a grubby and inglorious compromise–an attempt to reconcile our competing ideals of “don’t deal with terrorists” and “leave no man behind.” Instead the administration seems to be taking a victory lap.

FBI manhunt on for San Francisco man, Ryan

SAN FRANCISCO -- The FBI has issued a nationwide alert to law enforcement agencies about a San Francisco social media consultant they consider armed and dangerous who is wanted on suspicion of possessing explosives. FBI spokesman Peter Lee said Sunday that 42-year-old Ryan Kelly Chamberlain, II, was last seen in a dark blue, hooded sweatshirt and jeans. Multiple agencies, including hazardous materials crews, searched Chamberlain´s apartment in San Francisco´s Russian Hill neighborhood on Saturday, blocking off the street to vehicle and pedestrian traffic for much of the day. Some neighboring residents were evacuated as a precaution. A federal law enforcement

The SEC and FBI are investigating Carl Icahn, golfer Phil Mickelson and Las Vegas bettor Billy Walters in what is described as an insider trading probe. Icahn made a bid to take over Clorox in 2011, and Walters and Mickelson apparently made money investing in Clorox shares at around that time. The question under investigation is whether Walters and Mickelson got nonpublic information from Icahn about his intentions with regard to Clorox. As I understand it, Walters and Mickelson are friends, while Icahn says he has met Walters, but has never met Mickelson. I know nothing about the merits of

Having failed to get the Democrats’ cap-and-trade scheme through Congress, President Obama intends to create it through fiat, with the Environmental Protection Agency scheduled to issue today what amounts to a bill of attainder against coal-fired electricity generators. The regulation will set a national limit on greenhouse-gas emissions from coal plants and then offer states a phony menu of choices for meeting that standard, stacking the policy deck in such a way as to force them into cap-and-trade programs administered by multistate cartels. It is far from obvious that the Obama administration has anything like the legal authority for this; until

This week’s Mississippi senate primary is the bellwether election of this primary season–not, as the media’s favorite narrative has it, as round 73 in the fight between the Tea Party and the Republican establishment. Much more fundamentally, it is a test: is a sizable portion of the American electorate willing to embrace a serious alternative to Progressive government? The contrast in campaign messages between incumbent Thad Cochran and his challenger Chris McDaniel is dramatic. Mr. Cochran’s case is simple: I deliver (federal money). A Republican senate majority might land him the chairmanship of the senate’s Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry

Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) claimed this week that more resources would solve the root causes of the massive problems at the VA. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) said the V.A. needs more money to effectively serve our veterans. Joe Violante, the national legislative director for Disabled American Veterans, estimated that the V.A. has been underfunded by billions of dollars over the last decade. Based upon these assertions, it would be plausible to assume that budget cuts at the V.A. could be partly to blame. If funding of the V.A. has not kept up with inflation or patient growth, this would be

Last week I set out a 2016 nightmare scenario for Republicans -- not one that seems likely, but one that can be extrapolated from current polling. In that spirit, let me set out a 2016 nightmare scenario for Democrats — again, not likely but a plausible extrapolation. It assumes, first of all, that Hillary Clinton is not the Democratic nominee, or that her poll numbers have gone sharply down (they´ve declined somewhat over the last year, and could conceivably fall more). And it assumes that voters´ attitude toward the Obama administration remains roughly where it is today, with 44 percent job approval for

Is Hillary Clinton a charlatan or just the crappiest lawyer in Washington? As the Obama Left likes to say, that’s a false choice. There’s no reason she can’t be both. The question arises thanks to yet another excellent report on the Obama administration’s Benghazi fraud by the Weekly Standard’s Steve Hayes. The Benghazi fraud is a prominent subject of my new book, Faithless Execution, which traces the debacle from the president’s unauthorized, unprovoked, and ultimately disastrous instigation of a war against the Qaddafi regime; through his (and Secretary Clinton’s) recklessly irresponsible failure to provide security for the American officials they mysteriously

But how about for our masters in Washington, especially for the master-in-chief, Barack Obama? What, exactly, does the law require of him? That he follow and (see Article II of the U.S. Constitution) “faithfully execute” the laws? Not hardly. President Obama once had a sound foreign-policy concept, an overarching theme with real promise of being remembered as his doctrine. Oh, did you forget about the “pivot to Asia,” a k a “Rebalancing to the Pacific”? Well, so did he. The pivot went unmentioned in Obama’s Wednesday foreign-policy address at West Point. Indeed, he relegated Asia’s biggest fear — the growing military threat China poses to its neighbors — to a sub-clause as he discussed the Senate’s decades-long refusal to ratify an international convention, the Law of the Sea Treaty (derided by opponents as LOST). Oh, yes, folks on Obama’s

For someone who´s been dead for more than 50 years, Marilyn Monroe continues to make headlines. In October 2013, her cosmetic surgery records surfaced, indicating that she´d had a chin implant and possibly a nose job (those X-rays and medical notes were since sold at auction for $25,600). In addition, Forbes just ranked Monroe as the 2013´s 6th highest-earning dead celebrity (after Michael Jackson, Elvis, Charles M. Schulz, Elizabeth Taylor and Bob Marley). But perhaps most impressively, she was also named the newest face of Chanel No. 5. With what would have been her 88th birthday on June 1, we

Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the last known American POW, was freed after five years in captivity — an ordeal that began and ended in Afghanistan under a shroud of mystery. The Taliban turned over Bergdahl Saturday morning to US special forces in exchange for five notorious Islamic militants who had been held at Guantanamo Bay and will be sent to Qatar, where they will stay for a year under the terms of the trade. At least one of the prisoners, ranking Taliban leader Khairullah Khairkhwa, had direct ties to Osama bin Laden. Bergdahl was picked up by helicopter in western Afghanistan, near the Pakistan border.

The sense of pride expressed by officials of the Obama administration at the release of Army Sgt. "I was * off then and I am even more so now with everything going on," said former Sergeant Matt Vierkant, a member of Bergdahl´s platoon when he went missing on June 30, 2009. "Bowe Bergdahl deserted during a time of war and his fellow Americans lost their lives searching for him. Vierkant said Bergdahl needs to not only acknowledge his actions publicly

You would think a state with such dire financial problems couldn’t even consider spending such a large sum of tax dollars on something that’s usually built with private money. Luckily, the Illinois House has backed off the idea for the moment. USA Today reported… Illinois shelving $100M gift to Obama library A plan to offer $100 million in tax dollars to lure Barack Obama’s presidential library to Illinois is on the shelf, with lawmakers prepared to wrap up their spring session without advancing the idea. Democrats in the president’s home state pushed the proposal to compete against rival bids from Hawaii and New York.

Is the end near? Scientists at Duke University say the world is on the brink of its sixth great extinction, since certain species of plants and animals are now dying out at least 1,000 times faster than they did before humans came into existence. The study, published Thursday in the journal Science, measured the the rate at which species are disappearing from Earth. In 1995, the researchers found that the pre-human rate of extinctions was roughly 1. Now, that rate is about 100 to 1,000. Stuart Pimm, the study's lead author, said habitat loss is mostly to blame for the increasing death rates. As humans continue to alter and destroy more land,

WASHINGTON -- Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl can expect a buoyant homecoming after five years in Taliban hands, but those in the government who worked for his release face mounting questions over the prisoner swap that won his freedom. Even in the first hours of Bergdahl´s handoff to U.S. special forces in eastern Afghanistan, it was clear this would not be an uncomplicated yellow-ribbon celebration. Five terrorist suspects also walked free, stirring a debate in Washington over whether the exchange will heighten the risk of other Americans being snatched as bargaining chips and whether the released detainees - several senior Taliban figures

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel arrived in Afghanistan Sunday, one day after the White House announced that it had secured the release of Sgt. Hagel defended the Pentagon from criticism for not giving Congress a 30-day notice of the exchange of five detainees from the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for Bergdahl by saying that officials believed that the soldier´s life was in danger.

The Obama administration on Monday unveiled the first-ever national limits on carbon emissions from existing power plants, a controversial regulation aimed at fulfilling a key plank of President Obama´s climate change agenda. The Environmental Protection Agency wants existing plants to cut pollution by 30 percent by 2030, under the plan. The draft regulation sidesteps Congress, where Obama´s Democratic allies have failed to pass a so-called "cap-and-trade" plan to limit such emissions. The EPA plan will go into effect in June 2016, following a one-year comment period. States will then be responsible for executing the rule with some flexibility. They are
