Sue Townsend was working on a new Adrian Mole novel when she died, with the working title of Pandora’s Box. The book was due for publication this autumn and Townsend had sent “a few wonderful pages” to her editor, Louise Moore, earlier this year. It is not known if the author had completed a first draft, and it will now be up to her family to decide what, if anything, of the project will be published. The working title raises the wonderful prospect that Townsend planned for her hero to be romantically reunited with Pandora, object of his affection since

The Peach State is poised to become a petri-dish for the nation´s most ambitious gun-rights experiment, following Gov. Nathan Deal´s signing of a law that will permit concealed-carry permit holders to keep their weapons as they enter non-secure areas of airports, along with some churches and bars, and most government buildings. Lawmakers, which passed the bill by wide bipartisan margins in he waning hours of the year´s legislative session, notably excluded the state capitol where they work from the list of places where pre-vetted Georgians can now pack heat without penalty. Reaction was swift and incendiary. Time magazine called the move

American unreason: why US politics is

This week the National Journal carried a very neat example of the gulf between the moderate "country club" Republican elite and the more conservative blue-collar grassroots that tend to dominate GOP primaries, and then lose general elections in today´s more secular, ethnically diverse America. The piece--well worth reading--tells the story of a US Senate candidate in Georgia who attacked his fellow Republican primary opponents for their lack of education and sophistication, at one point openly mocking the fact that "There´s a high school graduate in the race" and asking how, in a global economy, the semi-educated could possibly bring value

An Afghan security guard opened fire on a group of doctors at a Kabul hospital on Thursday morning, killing three American physicians and wounding a U.S. nurse, officials have said. The shooting at Cure International Hospital in western Kabul was the latest in a string of deadly attacks on foreign civilians in the Afghan capital this year. Two of the dead were a visiting father and son, Minister of Health Soraya Dalil said. The other victim was a Cure International doctor who had worked for seven years in Kabul. She said an American nurse had also been wounded in the attack.

The first contingent of US troops has landed in Poland for military exercises amid tensions with Russia over Ukraine. An initial 150 soldiers are to be followed by a further 450 within days. Separately, the UK, Netherlands and Denmark scrambled fighter jets after Russian military aircraft were spotted approaching their airspace. US President Barack Obama accused Russia of flouting last week´s deal on Ukraine. Moscow said it would respond to any attack on its interests there. Speaking on Russian state TV channel RT on Wednesday, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov drew a parallel with the 2008 Georgian war, saying that if

A lot of people hate Tony Blair, and hate him in particular for what he did in the Middle East, and so when he made a speech today on the need for a broad front to combat Islamism they came out with a torrent of abuse. That is a mistake because most of his speech, properly understood, is a giant mea culpa. Since most people think that this mea culpa is necessary, perhaps they should listen. He is also right – and a lot of his critics would probably agree - that both political and militant Islamism are giant challenges

Kiev and the West say Moscow commands the gunmen - claims denied by Russia. In the past month, pro-Russian militants have overrun several cities in the eastern Donetsk region. They have occupied public buildings and installed their own officials, in similar tactics to those used to take over the Ukrainian region of Crimea earlier in the year. The US had earlier demanded that Moscow must publicly call for pro-Russian gunmen to lay down their weapons and

While America’s wealthiest citizens continue to outpace their global peers, the country’s middle class has lost its long held distinction of being the most affluent in the world according to new research. Although economic growth in the United States continues to be as strong as in many other countries--or stronger--only a small percentage of American households are fully benefiting from it, according to the LIS analysis. Based on surveys conducted over the past 35 years, income across the lower--and middle-income tiers of American society has plateaued over that time, while citizens in other advanced countries have received considerably larger rises.

Public Trust: Sixty-one percent polled say President Obama lies "some of the time" or "most of the time" on matters of national importance. Americans have to ask: Why do we let him get away with it? It´s no surprise that a Fox News poll of 1,012 registered voters last week found immense distrust of a president whose main domestic initiative was based on a lie. The shock is that the same poll found his disapproval level down to its lowest since last fall. I wasn´t a Blue Star family member. I didn´t know much about the military, and I was probably more like the average American,” said Obama.

But his comments on Wednesday appeared to be more direct. Asked what his "immediate plans" were, he said, according to an attendee: "I´m thinking about running for president." But he found an adversary in Bob Beckel, who challenged the status quo by presenting actual data on the rise of CO2 levels from NASA, of all places. But before Beckel got to his chart, Bolling took some time to “praise” President Barack Obama for what

For six months, CNN has been reporting on extended delays in health care appointments suffered by veterans across the country and who died while waiting for appointments and care.
