In payback for nuclear option,
Republicans block Harry Reid´s attempt

The Senate got hit by fallout from the so-called nuclear option Thursday when Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., tried to confirm a controversial judicial nominee at the last minute before a recess. Republicans demanded he provide the full 30 hours of debate required by Senate rules. "The history of most nominations is there´s been a lot of bipartisan cooperation to process non-controversial nominations," Senate Minority Whip John Cornyn, R-Texas, told the Washington Examiner after the floor fight. "This one, there is some controversy associated with it." (Snip)"Friedland has a supremacist legal/judicial philosophy that seeks to arrogate legislative power by arguing

(Video) Marcus Luttrell, the Navy Seal who wrote Lone Survivor, appeared on Fox and Friends this morning and made a brilliant point about the V.A. scandal: If you had to put people, Senators — if they had to go for their V.A. to get care, it would probably get fixed. Exactly. Luttrell also suggested that veterans should be able to avoid the V.A. system altogether, by receiving a voucher of some sort from the government in order to use the private healthcare system. This is a great point, of course, and one that deserves serious consideration. As for Senators signing

One of the first daughters is about to get behind the wheel. “One child is going to be driving this summer,” first lady Michelle Obama said of her daughter Malia’s upcoming milestone in an interview with “Access Hollywood” Tuesday. “Look out,” she joked.Seeing a teenager with the key in the ignition is always a little scary for parents. But a first daughter’s first drive comes with its own set of challenges. The White House, however, have been a little sketchy on its plans. Here’s what we know: 1. What’s special about July 4? It’s Malia Obama’s 16th birthday. (OK, yes;

Health insurance coverage now

Washington Post, by Jason Millman    Original Article

The typical cost of health care for a family of four with employer-based insurance this year is $23,215, according to a new report from the Milliman actuarial firm. The bad news first: That amount has more than doubled in the past 10 years. The goodish news: That cost grew just 5.4 percent between 2013 and 2014, the slowest growth rate since Milliman started keeping track in 2002. [Graph] That $23,215 figure isn’t what the employee pays, though. Employers pay about 60 percent of those costs ($13,520), while workers pay the rest through payroll deductions ($5,908) and out-of-pocket costs ($3,787). The

The Defense Department said Monday it is looking at expanding its application pool by letting some young illegal immigrants join the military, in what could be another tool for an Obama administration seeking unilateral steps to take on immigration reform. Immigrant rights advocates are pleading with the Pentagon to declare “dreamers” to be vital to the national interest, which would allow them to enlist in the military under a special program that grants non-immigrants a quick pathway to citizenship in exchange for years of military service. Jessica Wright, acting undersecretary for personnel and readiness, said Monday that the Pentagon is

On Wednesday, President Barack Obama spoke with members of the press after meeting with his staff on how they plan to address the scandal involving the hiding of wait times veterans faced at VA hospitals. The president expressed his anger over that situation, but he urged the public to wait for a full investigation before taking steps to address the problems at the Department of Veterans Affairs. “When I hear allegations of misconduct,” Obama said, “I will not stand for it. Not as commander-in-chief, but also not as an American.” “If these allegations prove to be true, it is dishonorable,

That´s not how the administration is characterizing the new regulations buried in dozens of new rules released last week. But read this and tell me it isn´t exactly as I describe it; a slush fund that will make payments to multi-billion dollar companies - as long as they keep premium increases low in advance of the November elections. LA Times: The Obama administration has quietly adjusted key provisions of its signature healthcare law to potentially make billions of additional taxpayer dollars available to the insurance industry if companies providing coverage through the Affordable Care Act lose money. In 2013, Barack Obama’s Justice Department launched Operation Choke Point, which it said it would use to “monitor” banks and other financial institutions who process transactions for payday loan businesses and other online lenders the administration considers open to fraudulent activities. And now? The operation is reportedly being used against banks who do business with other types of companies the administration deems “high risk.” Among them: porn stores, escort services and drug paraphernalia shops. And gun dealers. Yeah, gun dealers. That means that gun shops that offer their products online and use a third-party company such as PayPal to handle

We have a choice to make. We can make it easier for businesses to invest in America or make it harder. Apparently some, especially Republicans, want to increase the obstacles for foreign companies to expand in the U.S. It is not clear how or why they are doing this, but despite his urging businesses to “do their part” in his

Speaking at a conference in California, he noted, “Thirty days in the hospital? And when she reappears, she’s wearing glasses that are only for people who have traumatic brain injury? We need to know what’s up with that.” Let’s ignore the media hyperventilating and look at what Rove actually suggested. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, traumatic brain injury, or TBI, “occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain.” Secretary Clinton reportedly

A terrible sort of insanity has gripped the Democratic Party. On almost a daily basis, when you see the party’s leaders in action, you want to start edging toward the door, murmuring “Nice doggie. Nice doggie.” Today it was Howard Dean (filmed a week ago, but seen on YouTube today). He was addressing a Democratic crowd in Colorado, and went off on a tirade against Republicans. Yes, he really did say that Republicans aren’t American. And that they should stay away from the United States, and go to Russia where they belong. One gets the feeling that if the Democrats

Republicans’ hopes of winning back the Senate received a big boost in primary elections Tuesday, with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) easily winning and other candidates favored by the party establishment beating back tea party challengers. After years of intraparty turmoil that cost Republicans key races, voters this year are coalescing around the GOP’s strongest candidates ahead of November’s general election, when control of the Senate during President Obama’s final two years in office will be up for grabs. On Tuesday, the most consequential day of voting so far this year, Democrats were left disappointed. GOP Senate candidates prone to

Time after time, President Obama has reportedly learned of a number of big administration scandals in the media, from the IRS to Fast & Furious and now the VA scandal over wait times and veterans dying before receiving proper treatment (Jay Carney said today the president learned about this scandal through media reports). All this apparent unawareness before the fact led Charles Krauthammer to argue on Special Report today that Obama acts like he “stumbled upon the presidency” only to be shocked by how much wrong there really is. He lightly mocked the idea that Obama is “madder than hell”

With the latest Benghazi! ™ extravaganza about to begin, the Democrats are faced with a dilemma. Should they boycott the silly hearings, thus leaving the Republicans to put on their pageant unimpeded, or should they join in with a full panel and add legitimacy to the process? The problem seems to be that whether they like it or not, these hearings are going to be covered. And if the press reaction so far tells us anything, they are looking for a show.
