Moscow - Russia´s Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Tuesday it had killed Moscow´s most wanted man, Islamist insurgency leader Doku Umarov, in a combat operation. A website sympathetic to the insurgency in the North Caucasus said on March 18 that Umarov was dead but the Russian authorities had not previously confirmed the report. Umarov´s Caucasus Emirate organisation has played a leading role in the insurgency aimed at creating an Islamist state in Russia´s North Caucasus and says it was behind attacks in Moscow in 2010 and 2011 that killed a total of 77 people. "As a result of a combat operation, the activity of the head of

I still think we missed a great opportunity post-Cold War to join forces with the Russians (and maybe even the Chinese) to hunt down and rid the world of islamic fundamentalism for a long time to come.

Black flags over American tanks, Iraqi heads on public display and women threatened with death should they leave their homes – this is the new caliphate pseudo-state of ISIS, perhaps short-lived, but, while breathing, the worst of all case scenarios for anyone invested in the Middle East. (Snip) We know that ISIS’s current campaign, dubbed Operation Soldier’s Harvest, began in October 2013 with the explicit aim of cementing control of territory for the formation of a caliphate, erasing borders imposed by a colonial West and reimposing strict Shari’a law. With Ramadan approaching on June 28, we can expect ISIS will attempt a

Anaheim, CA - President Obama, appearing emboldened after his recent move to cut carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants, on Saturday ridiculed members of Congress who deny climate change or plead scientific ignorance as an alibi for avoiding an uncomfortable truth. Speaking in gleefully sarcastic terms to a commencement ceremony at the University of California, Irvine, Mr. Obama likened those who deny climate change to people who would have told John F. Kennedy, at the dawn of the space program, that the moon “was made of cheese.” He saved his most scathing words for lawmakers who say they are not qualified to

Thousands of Shiite Muslims across Iraq took up arms Saturday and joined security forces in the fight against Al Qaeda-inspired militants who have invaded and taken over huge chunks of territory north of Baghdad. The Al Qaeda splinter group, known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), has been on the move, conducting an offensive in the western region of the country and now threaten stability in the nation’s capital. A cheerleader for the Russian Revolution in the early 20th century and a leader in the labor movement during the Depression; hounded during the McCarthy era and orphaned after the fall of the Soviet Union, the Communist Party USA on Friday returned to Chicago, the city of its birth. Given the movement´s history, some might wonder why anyone would want to be a communist. But the more than 300 adherents who came to celebrate the party´s 95th anniversary at the University of Illinois at Chicago see it the other way around: Who wouldn´t want to be a member? The terrorist militia ravaging the sovereignty of Iraq is headquartered in Syria, where the group gained strength through the strife of the civil war there. Eliana’s report is just stunning — no matter how many times similar “mishaps” have occurred in this administration. The IRS, like other government agencies, has lots of reasons to maintain emails, so I’m curious about whether they will be similarly informing courts, Congress, litigants, FOIA petitioners, and other people and bodies they must periodically make disclosures and reports to that they’ve lost nearly two years’ worth of agency communications? Or was this just one of those highly, highly unusual computer crashes that affects only the email account of Lois Lerner and any executive branch official with whom she happened to

BOSTON — Once fearing he would be viewed as "a loser for life" if he failed to win the presidency, Mitt Romney is trying to re-emerge as a force in Republican politics. Romney has quietly sought kingmaker status in the GOP´s fight for the Senate majority this fall and its quest to retake the White House in 2016. The effort at revival is fueling whispers about a third presidential run. But those closest to Romney suggest he´s more interested in shaping party politics by lending his name and record-breaking fundraising machine to what he considers the next generation of electable conservatives.
