Facebook began notifying users of its mobile app Wednesday that it will soon disable the app´s messaging feature. The Menlo Park, Calif., tech giant is instructing users to download the Facebook Messenger app -- a distinct entity from its main app -- if they wish to continue messaging friends from their smartphones. The Facebook Messenger app has been available for a number of years, and users who have both apps installed already can only message others through the separate app. But soon, all users will be forced to download the second app if they want to be able to message friends. Ugh, FB drives me crazy with their constant "changes" for improvement. Just leave it as is, it works fine. If I didn´t have so much business tied up in the social media thing, I would go back to 2 tin cans and a string, I swear.

Obama fails to show
his vaunted ‘competence’
Boston Globe, by Jeff Jacoby    Original Article

As a candidate for president in 1988, Michael Dukakis famously proclaimed: “This election is not about ideology; it’s about competence.” It wasn’t a winning argument. Dukakis ran as the architect of the so-called “Massachusetts Miracle,” the state’s mid-1980s economic boom. But the miracle was turning into a fiscal meltdown, and, as it did, Dukakis’s once-commanding lead went down the drain. On Election Day, he lost to George H. W. Bush in a 40-state landslide. Dukakis played down ideology because he didn’t want to be tagged as a liberal, and he played up competence because that’s what all candidates do.

CARACAS- Venezuela´s foreign minister on Monday rebuked his U.S. counterpart, John Kerry, for criticizing the handling of street protests and reiterated accusations Washington wants to topple the socialist government. In the U.S. government´s strongest comments since demonstrations began in February, Kerry said last week that Venezuela´s government had shown "total failure" of good faith in now-suspended talks to stem the unrest. In Venezuela´s worst violence in a decade, 42 people have died during months of daily protests demanding President Nicolas Maduro´s departure and solutions to economic hardships.

During President Obama‘s surprise trip to Afghanistan on Sunday, the White House mistakenly exposed the identity of the Central Intelligence Agency’s top official in Kabul. According to the Washington Post, the officer’s name (which has been redacted by the press to protect the individual’s safety) was inadvertently included among a list distributed to the press showing the names senior U.S. officials participating in the president’s trip. The mistaken list reportedly identified the individual as “Chief of Station,” the CIA’s term for the highest-ranking spy official in a given country. After the White House recognized the error, they quickly issued a revised list. The

Much of Elliot Rodger’s video and written manifestos pointed to a frustration over women not finding him attractive as motive for the killing spree he went on Friday night near UC Santa Barbara that left seven dead including himself. But according to one “expert” on Fox News this weekend, it was his “homosexual impulses” that may have driven him to kill. Dr. Robi Ludwig, a psychotherapist and reality show host, said her theories about Rodger’s motives began to evolve the more she listened to his disturbing rants. “When I was first listening to him, I was like, ‘Oh, he’s angry with

Liberal Democrats feel the wind is at their backs, making it all the more irksome for them that Hillary Clinton could be their presidential nominee in 2016. For many on the left, Clinton is the woman who supported the Iraq war, ran to the right of President Obama and is associated with the Wall Street-friendly centrism espoused by her husband, former President Bill Clinton. Progressives feel they are in a political golden age in which questions about income inequality are growing louder, anti-gay marriage laws are falling and the growing Hispanic electorate regards the GOP with skepticism. Given all that, they don’t

American whistleblower Edward Snowden is “considering” returning home to the USA under certain conditions, his lawyer told German news magazine Der Spiegel. "There are negotiations," Snowden´s German lawyer Wolfgang Kaleck told Der Spiegel. "Those who know the case are aware that an amicable agreement with the US authorities will be most reasonable.” All efforts are now focused on finding a solution acceptable for Edward Snowden, at least in the medium term, according to Kaleck, who is also secretary-general for the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights. Meanwhile, former NSA contractor isn’t involved in these negotiations, according to Kaleck, who added that his

Thomas Pikettyhas accused the Financial Times of ridiculous and dishonest criticism of his economics book on inequality that has become a publishing sensation. The French economist, whose 577-page tome Capital in the Twenty-First Century has become an unlikely must-read for business leaders and politicians alike, said it was ridiculous to suggest that his central thesis on rising inequality was incorrect. The controversy blew up when the FT accused Piketty of errors in transcribing numbers, as well as cherry-picking data or not using original sources. The newspaper concluded there was little evidence in Piketty´s original sources to bear out his theory that the

Dinesh D’Souza faces more than a year in prison for giving away his money. Guilt lies with the law and not the lawbreaker here. The conservative author pled guilty to violating campaign finance laws, which is another way of saying he opened up a lemonade stand without a license or ripped the tag off a mattress. The case stems from D’Souza’s 2012 donations through intermediaries to a friend’s senatorial campaign. Congress, made up of incumbents, has placed restrictions of dubious constitutionality on the amount individuals can legally donate to candidates. They haven’t, tellingly, placed any such limits on what they can

The Democratic legislator said that many people oppose the law “because they don’t like the president, maybe he’s the wrong color.” Johnson immediately jumped in to blast his colleague for playing the “race card.” Scarborough agreed, telling his fellow panelists: I have been behind closed doors with thousands of conservatives

One government agency has decided that the results of employee ratings are too discriminatory, and eliminated the process entirely. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced on Monday that it will now award all employees the highest rating regardless of performance reviews. The CFPB, which oversees transactions in the financial sector for the federal government, decided to no longer conduct employee reviews because there were just too many apparent “significant disparities” between the races, ages, and locations of its employees. President Barack Obama made a surprise visit to U.S. troops in Afghanistan, promising an end to combat missions in Afghanistan by the close of the year and help easing veterans back into civilian life following their return to the States. Obama pledged a commitment to limited troop presence beyond 2014 in Afghanistan, which is undergoing a presidential transition, to safeguard the gains made against al Qaeda by American troops. He then name-checked the just-opened 9/11 Museum at Ground Zero, describing a flag from that day that had survived the attacks to maintain its patriotic symbolism, much as the troops he
