A shy teenager with no prior violent tendencies who went on a random, stabbing rampage at his high school on Wednesday told his arresting officers that he ´wanted to die´. Alex Hribal, 16, stalked through Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville near Pittsburgh early on Wednesday morning, stabbing victims in the torso and slashing their arms and faces before being tackled by assistant principal Sam King. The attacker was described by students as a small, quiet boy who largely kept to himself but was not an outcast and did not appear to have been bullied. There were no indications before the attack

Since kids in today´s self-esteem culture are given everything they want, why get in the way now?

Someone elsewhere raised the question of psychological side effects of Accutane - this punk had horrible acne. It´s also quite possible he was on this or that antidepressant. Given the ever-changing body chemistry of adolescents, who knows what adult drugs/doses will do?

#4, I have to agree. A chair to the back of the head would have stopped this. Kids must be taught not to be victims. I don´t mean being foolishly heroic, but surely two or three boys could have tackled him or thrown books at him. Of course, I wasn´t there but I can assure you in my high school, the kid would have gotten a severe beat down. Surprise may have caused hesitation but come on guys, there is strength in numbers.

The whole event lasted about 5 minutes. Most of those stabbed had no idea what was going on or that some kid was after them with a knife. He was running from one hall to another taking the victims by surprise before they could even react or defend themselves with anything.

The first question we should be asking is,"Was this young man on medication of any kind?" Was he "diagnosed" with "ADD" or ´ADHD", or "depression" at some point? He´s male, after all. That is a very likely possibility. Next we can ask about his family life, but how much do you want to wager that this kid was being prescribed medication for some kind of disorder?

Agree #6. A crowded hallway, a quiet attacker, there´s no way people would know who was actually doing the stabbing right away. Even if he stabbed you, you might know who´d done it if he did it walking past you. It´s one of the things that makes knife attacks so dangerous.

A male student did try to stop the kid--and got stabbed in the face. The attacker was running amok. Thanks, Posters 6,8, 10, and 11.

Some of the uninjured students were trying to help the injured ones. Apparently one girl saved another student from bleeding to death.
