Political Ties of Top Billers for Medicare
New York Times, by FRANCES ROBLES and ERIC LIPTON

Original Article

Posted By:Drive, 4/10/2014 7:34:36 AM

MIAMI — Two Florida doctors who received the nation’s highest Medicare reimbursements in 2012 are both major contributors to Democratic Party causes, and they have turned to the political system in recent years to defend themselves against suspicions that they may have submitted fraudulent or excessive charges to the federal government. The pattern of large Medicare payments and six-figure political donations shows up among several of the doctors whose payment records were released for the first time this week by the Department of Health and Human Services. For years, the department refused to make the data public, and finally did so

What was more painful for the NYT, printing this or having to admit that it was the WSJ that led the way in getting the story out?

Hillary’s big economy speech
forgets about Obamanomics
American Enterprise Institute, by James Pethokoukis    Original Article

It was a weird moment during Hillary Clinton’s big-think economic speech the other day. The former Obama secretary of state and current middle-class warrior had just finished ticking off a bunch of worrisome stats on income growth, income inequality, and social mobility. She really focused on how Canada’s middle-class is now supposedly richer than America’s in an economy with both more equality and a stronger safety net. Then Clinton continued: That’s not how it’s supposed to be. We often think that we invented the middle-class. So what can we do about it? Of course, a lot depends on our leadership here

The New Obama Narrative:
Epic Incompetence
Commentary, by Peter Wehner    Original Article

The last eight months have battered the Obama administration. From the botched rollout of the health-care website to the VA scandal, events are now cementing certain impressions about Mr. Obama. Among the most damaging is this: He is unusually, even epically, incompetent. That is not news to some of us, but it seems to be a conclusion more and more people are drawing. The emerging narrative of Barack Obama, the one that actually comports to reality, is that he is a rare political talent but a disaster when it comes to actually governing. The list of his failures is nothing short

MIAMI – When asked why he would risk his job and speak publicly, Detective Thomas Fiore considered the question carefully before answering. “People are dying,” he finally said, “and there are so many things that are going on there that people need to know about.” Fiore, a criminal investigator for the VA police department in South Florida, contacted CBS4 News hoping to shed light on what he considers a culture of cover-ups and bureaucratic neglect. Among his charges: Drug dealing on the hospital grounds is a daily occurrence. “Anything from your standard prescription drugs like OxyContin, Vicodin, Percocet, and of

Exclusive Breaking Analysis: Obama

After more than five years in office, President Obama still can’t throw a baseball like a normal adult male, a Free Beacon analysis has found. Obama’s lack of basic motor skills was on display Monday evening at a Little League game in Washington, D.C. He looked like he was trying to shot put a hacky sack, or something. The Little Leaguers were not impressed, the Associated Press reports: Shocked parents reached for their smartphones to snap a quick photo, but not all of their kids were as impressed. Some held back, unsure of who Obama was, as their parents tried

TRENTON—In early January 2014, Chris Christie was a man who never said “sorry”—not for the 132 corrupt officials he put in jail as U.S. attorney, not for the deals he cut to cobble together a winning coalition against incumbent Jon Corzine’s millions and not for notching a 22-point win over a Democratic opponent in a state where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by some 700,000. In fact, when reporters first pressed him about the expanding Bridgegate scandal the previous month, the governor declared that The Wall Street Journal will “owe an apology to Sen. [Bill] Baroni and Mr. [David] Wildstein.” Read

In 2012, the Obama administration produced a draft National Intelligence Estimate that reached a surprising conclusion: al Qaeda was no longer a direct threat to America. That classified assessment, which has never before been publicly disclosed, was in keeping with the message coming from the White House. President Obama rode to re-election in 2012 partly on the success of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. At rallies and in press conferences, the president and top officials publicly said al Qaeda was on the run. But some senior U.S. intelligence officials, like Defense Intelligence Agency Director Gen. Michael Flynn, fought

LOS ANGELES — Armed guards may soon be needed in the fight over the medical care of radio legend Casey Kasem. Lawyers for the ailing “American Top 40” king and his eldest daughter, Kerri, are discussing a proposal under which armed security would take him from his wife’s custody in Washington state and move him to a hospital for an evaluation, a legal source told the Daily News Monday. A court-appointed lawyer representing the 82-year-old’s interests as a neutral party filed paperwork Monday asking that Kasem’s wife, Jean, be forced to surrender her husband’s passport, and work with Kasem’s daughter on the

It´s common for Republicans to say there are "unanswered questions" about the September 11, 2012 terrorist attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya. In some cases, though, it might be more accurate to say that questions have been answered, but Republicans don´t believe the answers. A prime example concerns then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton´s knowledge about the lax security surrounding U.S. diplomats in Libya. There´s no doubt the situation was terrible; the Obama administration was woefully unprepared for trouble in the months leading up to the violence.

In the outpouring of praise for William D. Cohan´s new book "The Price of Silence"—a work, remarkably enough, being celebrated as a model of evenhandedness, scrupulous objectivity, etc.—one essential has gone overlooked. Namely, the central point of this tale about the Duke lacrosse case and accusations against three players of rape and assault at a house party. It takes no close reading to see that the book is meant to recast the story so as to nullify the outcome Americans thought they knew—that the players were exonerated and had been falsely accused. In Mr. Cohan´s portrayal, the workings of decency

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – For five decades of Saturdays, Jerry´s Barber Shop has been a center of Arkansas politics, servicing receding hairlines for governors, legislators and judges alongside the voters who elect and reject them. "I know how to make a politician tell the truth," owner Jerry Hood says, "put a razor to his neck." That joke never fails. On this Saturday morning, Hood´s audience consists of two fellow barbers and four customers, including me – and the crowd guffaws while I blindly scribble quotes in a notepad beneath my barber´s smock. I´ve ordered a Number 1 buzz cut. "People are sick

‘Delay in treatment’ a factor in

As controversy swirls around the Veterans Administration over deaths caused by delayed care, an investigation by the Dayton Daily News found that the VA settled many cases that appear to be related to delays in treatment. A database of paid claims by the VA since 2001 includes 167 in which the words "delay in treatment" is used in the description. The VA paid out a total of $36.4 million to settle those claims, either voluntarily or as part of a court action.

Why won’t Sen. Marco Rubio say whether he’s ever smoked pot? The Florida Republican, who maintains a strict stance against the legalization of marijuana, refuses to answer whether he’s ever personally smoked it. Rubio told “Politics Confidential” that his silence on the matter is based on his belief that there is no “responsible way to recreationally use marijuana.” “If you say that you did, then suddenly there are people out there saying, ‘Well, it´s not a big deal,’” Rubio said. “On the other side of it is if you tell people that you didn´t, they won´t believe you.” Rubio explained that his decision

President Obama declared his outrage at allegations of misconduct at VA hospitals at a Wednesday press conference after an Oval Office meeting with Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki. "I will not stand for it — not as commander in chief, but also not as an American,” he told reporters as furor grows over allegations of treatment delays and preventable deaths at the health care facilities. The VA Inspector General’s office said late Tuesday that 26 facilities are being investigated nationwide — up from 10 just last week — including a Phoenix hospital where 40 veterans allegedly died while waiting for treatment and

Karl Rove created a stir with his recent suggestion that former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton may have suffered traumatic brain injury in December 2012. Speaking at a conference in California, he noted, “Thirty days in the hospital? And when she reappears, she’s wearing glasses that are only for people who have traumatic brain injury? We need to know what’s up with that.” Let’s ignore the media hyperventilating and look at what Rove actually suggested. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, traumatic brain injury, or TBI, “occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain.” Secretary Clinton reportedly

A terrible sort of insanity has gripped the Democratic Party. On almost a daily basis, when you see the party’s leaders in action, you want to start edging toward the door, murmuring “Nice doggie. Nice doggie.” Today it was Howard Dean (filmed a week ago, but seen on YouTube today). He was addressing a Democratic crowd in Colorado, and went off on a tirade against Republicans. Yes, he really did say that Republicans aren’t American. And that they should stay away from the United States, and go to Russia where they belong. One gets the feeling that if the Democrats

Republicans’ hopes of winning back the Senate received a big boost in primary elections Tuesday, with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) easily winning and other candidates favored by the party establishment beating back tea party challengers. After years of intraparty turmoil that cost Republicans key races, voters this year are coalescing around the GOP’s strongest candidates ahead of November’s general election, when control of the Senate during President Obama’s final two years in office will be up for grabs. On Tuesday, the most consequential day of voting so far this year, Democrats were left disappointed. GOP Senate candidates prone to

Time after time, President Obama has reportedly learned of a number of big administration scandals in the media, from the IRS to Fast & Furious and now the VA scandal over wait times and veterans dying before receiving proper treatment (Jay Carney said today the president learned about this scandal through media reports). All this apparent unawareness before the fact led Charles Krauthammer to argue on Special Report today that Obama acts like he “stumbled upon the presidency” only to be shocked by how much wrong there really is. He lightly mocked the idea that Obama is “madder than hell”

With the latest Benghazi! ™ extravaganza about to begin, the Democrats are faced with a dilemma. Should they boycott the silly hearings, thus leaving the Republicans to put on their pageant unimpeded, or should they join in with a full panel and add legitimacy to the process? The problem seems to be that whether they like it or not, these hearings are going to be covered. And if the press reaction so far tells us anything, they are looking for a show.
