As Barbara Walters gets ever closer to her retirement next month, the 84-year-old says she might return to the interviewee who won her the highest ratings of her 50 years on TV: Monica Lewinsky. Walters´ 1999 interview with the scandalous former White house intern drew a record 74 million viewers, but the TV news queen says it´s Lewinsky´s personal saga that could win her the spot as Walters´ final ever interview. ´I’d like to interview Monica again. I think Monica’s story is very interesting, because everybody else has been able to move on. I’m touched by the fact that she

While true #7, Ms. Lewinsky was much much younger when her indiscretions occurred. Ms. Walter´s life was not ruined because of hers. I do not in any way dismiss what happened with Ms. Lewinsky and Bill Clinton, but to have to pay the price she has paid with such powerful people against her is in no way just. I do feel sorry for her.

Barbara Walters never advanced one inch from her gossipy predilections that first became disgustingly clear way back in the late 1970s. During a career in front of the camera, she has never broken any story that made the slightest bit of difference to anyone who never read a tabloid broadsheet.

In the late 1970s the acerbic, brilliant John Simon wrote an essay entitled "Verbal Barbarisms," that absolutely eviscerated the self-important Walters. Simon´s essay appears in his 1980 collection Paradigms Lost, which I still revisit from time to time, just to savor the erudite invective that flames from his pen, hosing down such nubile targets as Walters, Rex Reed, Gore Vidal (among others) and expressing heartfelt admiration for Edwin Newman´s civilized tongue.

Anyone encountering Simon´s book will understand that he--same as I--love and uphold the English language when it´s used with precision and poetic inspiration. If you dig around, perhaps on Amazon or in the dusty corner of your local library, you may still be able to find this wonderful compendium of Simon´s bons mots. I couldn´t recommend it any more highly. (You´ll thank me later!)

Amazon has been dragged into a major EU tax crackdown after officials demanded documents relating to the online retail giant´s tax affairs. The EU´s competition commission has asked Luxembourg, where Amazon´s European business is based, to hand over details on the company´s tax payments, according to a report in the FT. An EU official told the newspaper that Brussels was seeking more information on the nature of the tax deal that had been struck between Luxembourg and Amazon. The move could lead to a full-blown investigation into the retailer´s European tax arrangements. The online retail giant has joined a growing

Only days after Patrick Moore, the disillusioned co-founder of Greenpeace, said the green movement has become a "combination of extreme political ideology and religious fundamentalism rolled into one," Greenpeace seems determined to prove Moore was right. The group has launched a fun-sucking, fundamentalist attack on the toy company Lego, claiming "Shell is using Lego to clean up its image for dirty oil drilling" in the Arctic. Greenpeace, like an environmental Bible-thumper, demands, "Lego, how will you rebuild what Shell destroys?" In fact all Lego has done is agree a deal in which the Anglo-Dutch petroleum giant gives away Shell-branded Lego

Ever since Islamist militants emerged as the dominant force in the conflicts in Iraq and Syria, much has been written about how groups such Isis, which is currently in the process of establishing an Islamic Caliphate in northern Iraq, should be distinguished from the mainstream al-Qaeda movement. Isis fighters are so extreme, or so the argument goes, that even al-Qaeda is appalled at their barbarous treatment of their fellow Muslims, to the extent that Ayman al-Zawahiri, al-Qaeda´s somewhat isolated leader, has attempted to disown them.
