Tiger Woods´ absence from Masters
greeted mostly with shrugs

Los Angeles Times, by Bill Plaschke

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The slow and awkward decay of the powerful aura of Tiger Woods continued here Tuesday on a rain-soaked golfing cathedral that smelled like a damp towel. For the first time in 20 years, Woods will not be here for the Masters, a tournament he has won four times, his virtual ownership of Augusta National symbolizing his decades of dominance. Yet his fellow golfers do not sound relieved. They do not act as if reprieved. They spoke of this giant, haunting presence with neither fear nor reverence.(Snip)"He´s 38 now, he´s an old man," said Jason Day, the media

Who cares if he plays or not? This is a great event with or without Woods. The only person who will really miss him is Jim "kissa--" Nance who, banished to isolation down in the Butler Cabin, will lament constantly about how the event could be even greater if Woods were playing this year.

No matter how great the player, the game is greater. In time there is a one hundred percent turnover in the composition of the field. Great players will be remembered, but younger players will take their rightful places, as it should be, and will establish their own legends. The game will go on. No one player is above it.

This week there will be some ninety players vying for the title. Forty of them are capable of winning. May the best man win.

In any case, I always want the nice guy to finish first. I think Kootch will close the deal this week, if not I am pulling for Speith. There´s really only a handful of players I don´t want to see with the green jacket on, but Tiger is one of them, so I´m quite pleased he´s not there.

It´s fun to argue about who was ´the greatest golfer of all time´. You have your Jones and Nicklaus fans (I am one of them). Then you have Hogan. Ben Hogan missed 32 majors in the prime of his career due to the near-fatal bus accident and wartime suspension of tournaments. He has nine majors. Who knows what would have happened if the tournaments had been played. It´s not out of reason to think he could have won ten of those or more. I think 20 majors would be a bridge too far for Woods.

This will give us an opportunity to focus on pro golfers who aren´t normally in the spotlight. Since Tiger came on the scene, he has been forced down our throats as the greatest of all golfers. Yes, he is a gifted and excellent golfer, but there are others who are just as interesting and deserving of attention.

PS. It wasn´t too long ago that, when Tiger would not even come close to winning a tournament, this paper - the Times - would feature a large full-color photo of him with something about his misfortune. The winner of the tournament would be given no photo and a few lines in the second or third or seventh paragraph.

Making his first appearance in front of the cameras since his mugshot went viral, convicted felon Jeremy Meeks wore a bright orange jumpsuit, handcuffs and a stone-serious expression. Meeks, who was arrested last month during a gang sweep in Stockton, Calif., faced multiple felony weapons charges. But during a brief court appearance in Stockton on Tuesday, the state agreed to turn the case — and Meeks — over to federal prosecutors, according to Sacramento’s KXTV. As members of Congress and reporters ask to visit federal facilities housing children who have been apprehended by the U.S. in recent months, federal officials are slapping limits on members of the news media who want a glimpse inside. Some communities blame the disease´s emergence on those who have gone there to help — medical staff in alien-looking full-body protection suits and masks.
