A two-decades-old battle between a Nevada rancher and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has resulted in officials armed with machine guns surrounding the ranch and forcibly removing the owner’s cattle, according to the rancher’s family. (snip)After years of court battles, the BLM secured a federal court order to have Bundy’s “trespass cattle” forcibly removed with heavy artillery, the family said. “The battle’s been going on for 20 years,” Bundy told theWashington Free Beacon. “What’s happened the last two weeks, the United States government, the bureaus are getting this army together

Yep, sounds like one bad scoundrel,

"The BLM designated 186,909 acres of the Gold Butte off-limits for the “critical desert tortoise” population in 1998. Bundy had already lost his grazing permit five years earlier for refusing to pay fees for the land, which his family has ranched since the 1870s."

I am a Texas rancher. In Texas, there is very little federal land, so we ranchers own the property we are using or we have leased it from another rancher. I have little use for those in other areas of the country who lease grazing rights from the feds and then consider the leased grass to be their own. Especially when the lessee refuses to pay the grazing fees.

But, the BLM can be a formidable foe and they really do move in with arms and scary tactics. I speak from sad experience after my brother and I blew the whistle on BLM employees who were profiting from the government´s Wild Horse program. The BLM didn´t appreciate being exposed.

But, you know what they say about two wrongs...

#1 is on the money, while the BLM response seems overwrought the media is only reporting the rants of the Bundy family right now. Its been pretty one sided reporting on a situation that has been escalating for 20 years. The Bundy´s have made violent threats to "trespassers" and are not innocent.

The fundamental fact bareley mentioned in every article I´ve read about this is the fact that the land under dispute is BLM land, leased to the Bundys for grazing rights. He has claimed that the land belongs to him and therefore he does not have to pay any grazing fees, and has not paid them in decades.

If someone decided to squat in your backyard wouldn´t you move to evict them? The free speech zones are jokes, but the BLM does have the authority to close areas to public egress and they control and maintain many of the (mostly dirt) roads.

Don´t look to this story to find a case of government abuse of a citizens rights, there´s rancor and long history on both sides and it is likely that this may well escalate. The whole turtle thing is just a red herring sideshow. And before we jump to "why does the government hold so much land anyway" rant remember how those huge ranches out west were founded.

The original land barons bought up only the tiniest slivers of land along the waterways believing that if they owned the water they would control all of the rest for free. Its called a water monopoly. Over the last 150 years many of them have come to believe they now own all the land outright and enforcing grazing leases is a lonely and dangerous job.

You mean they used cannon, rocket or surface-to-air missiles in the 161 to 210 caliber range?

Wow. I would have thought just light artillery would have been enough.

#1 and #4 are correct. While I am no fan of the BLM, Bundy has, and is, going about this the wrong way. Also, wasn´t this the same guy who was "confiscating" neighboring ranchers cattle that wandered onto his property, then refusing to return them unless paid for the grass and water the cattle consumed?

Thanks to posters 3 and 4 for some historical background. I believe also that another large holder of lands out West were/are railroad companies thanks to federal land grants (dating back to 1800s) to the railroads.

And poster 3 can comment on this, but on these federal lands, often times the native fauna and flora are in competition with cattle (and sometimes sheep) for limited resources.

#5, it was not "his ranch". The land belongs to the federal government and his family had leased it for many years. A long history of leasing does not convey title to the land. In addition, he had refused to pay the lease fees for many years. Mr. Bundy is no one´s victim.

Last post on this thread, but this story drives me nuts. It´s helpful to read the linked article inside the posted piece. Bundy´s argument seems to be that his Mormon ancestors settled on the land and "worked it" before the BLM was formed. That makes no legal difference, as courts have already ruled in the Bundy case. In the linked article, Mr. Bundy says he hopes to pass the land down to his 14 children. Well, no, Mr. Bundy. It is not your property to pass down.

The conservative commentators who advocated a “path to citizenship” after the 2012 election bear partial blame for the current wave of illegal immigrants from Central America. Many of those who advocated for amnesty following the 2012 election are now complaining that people indeed came expecting that amnesty. But there is also an unbelievably bad policy at the root of the problem. (snip)It is not ironic at all that that a law intended “to combat human trafficking” has facilitated human smuggling. It is not ironic because this is precisely the outcome we should expect from immigration policy designed by multicultural elites.

Thad Cochran shifts gears in bid

Sen. Thad Cochran and his allies are retooling their campaign strategy in a furious bid to survive Mississippi´s June 24, GOP primary runoff. Insurgent conservative Chris McDaniel, a state senator, led Cochran by just under 1,400 votes with most precincts reporting after last Tuesday’s primary, finishing a half a point shy of the 50 percent plus one threshold he needed to secure the nomination outright. Cochran now faces the enthusiasm and voter turnout gaps that often plague incumbents forced into primary runoffs — even those who win the initial contest by a healthy margin.

Much has been made of the battle between the Republican “establishment” and the Tea Party in the 2014 primary election cycle, particularly the GOP primary campaigns for the Senate races in North Carolina and Nebraska. That battle may be coming to a climax this week in Mississippi, where attorney and two-term state senator Chris McDaniel is riding endorsements from Tea Party groups like the Club For Growth, Senate Conservatives Fund, Citizens United, and Tea Party Express into a primary showdown with Thad Cochran, that state’s senior — he’s been in office forty-one years — U.S. senator.

Earlier this year, King toyed with the idea of caucusing with the Republicans in the Senate if they won a majority of the seats in the 2014 elections. Collins received the lowest score of any Senate Republican by the American Conservative Union´s annual rating of congress.
