Flaw Found in Key Method for
Protecting Data on the Internet

New York Times, by Nicole Perlroth

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 4/8/2014 5:50:52 PM

The tiny padlock next to web addresses that promised to protect our most sensitive information — passwords, stored files, bank details, even Social Security numbers — is broken. A flaw has been discovered in one of the Internet’s key encryption methods, potentially forcing a wide swath of websites to swap out the virtual keys that generate private connections between the sites and their customers. (Snip) Researchers are calling the bug “Heartbleed” because it affects the “heartbeat” portion of the OpenSSL protocol, which pings messages back and forth. It can and has been exploited by attackers.

That´s why I don´t back up my data in the ´cloud´. A 2TB external USB drive sells at Costco for about $140.

Software engineers love to put "back doors" in their stuff. If there is a back door, hackers will eventually find it.

Keep your critical data locked up in your own safe. It´s not perfectly secure, but at least it´s not sitting on someone else´s server.

You can be certain that this is already known to intelligence agencies around the world.
Most people don´t know that large software packages comprise millions of lines of code, are fiendishly difficult to write, and are impossible to thoroughly debug before being released.
Some of the most famous software, such as Microsoft´s operating systems, have been released with thousands of undetected bugs.
Humans are intelligent, but only to a point.

A week ago, VISA sent me a brand new card with a new number. I didn´t ask for one. The accompanying letter said there had been a security breach in one or more online merchants. I called both my bank and VISA, they said "they are not given that information". They said EVERYONE got a new card.

That´s one incident. The other is that I read that there was a breach in EXPERIAN, a credit-rating company. I don´t know how accurate the article was or if it´s connected to this "flaw" in the internet. That was last week.

And now this. If hackers can get this information so easily, imagine what they can do to our power grids, our supermarket checkout computers, our gasoline pumps, our medical data, our online auto-bill-paying AND our online purchases.

I don´t know if it pays to just phone in purchases or what. As for our house, we do NO online bill-paying. I want everything on paper in case the whole ´net goes down, and that isn´t such a paranoid thought these days.

I encrypt my files with at least TrueCrypt before sending to the cloud.
And sometimes my own encryption and then TrueCrypt.
I can´t trust the security of the cloud at all.
I even have concerns about TrueCrypt though it ranks at nearly the bottom of my concern list.

#1 the NSA has been found sending out insecure software to the industry but in this case it appears to be a mistake in open source libraries. It is difficult #3 to write secure code. Just think of how often you read over your posts and still mistooks creep in. This should not affect cloud storage backup systems since the files are encrypted and decrypted on your own machine using a key which is not transmitted over the internet. # 6 that may seem like a joke but there could well be numbers generated often for bank cards and everything that has money involved, even one off numbers for each time they get used. This would put a crimper in the identity theft industry! The NSA desire to listen in on everybody does generally weaken online security by discouraging best practices. The geeks are doing their best and if they were encouraged they could get the upper hand!

Lawyers advocating for illegal immigrant children flooding across the U.S.-Mexico border want Congress to make it more difficult to deport illegal immigrants, even from Mexico. Under current law, the federal government can immediately deport illegal immigrants from Mexico and Canada. Those from countries like Central America, though, cannot be immediately deported under a 2008 law. The American Immigration Lawyers Association told Congress this week that "there is no valid reason for treating vulnerable unaccompanied children differently based on their country of origin." The group, which is the national association of

Governor Rick Perry (R-TX) turned his attention away from the U.S.-Mexico border on Saturday to instead weigh in on foreign policy with an op-ed in the Washington Post titled “Isolationist policies make the threat of terrorism even greater.” In the column, Perry singles out a Wall Street Journal op-ed that Sen. Perry writes that he finds it “disheartening” to hear a fellow Republican like Paul “suggest that our nation should ignore what’s happening in Iraq,” saying that argument ignores the threat that ISIS poses to the United States. Border Patrol sources told KFI Radio´s Steven Gregory that Murrieta agents can process up to 25 people per shift, depending on the amount of staff in the Texas facilities. It is not immediately known if the station´s shift in processing practices can be attributed to the protesters outside the Murrieta Border Patrol Station, who have succeeded in rerouting three rounds of buses full of illegal aliens to other facilities. U.S. authorities have charged a Chinese businessman with hacking into the computer systems of U.S. companies with large defense contracts, including Boeing, to steal data on military projects, including some of the latest fighter jets, officials said Friday. Suspect Su Bin worked in cahoots with two unnamed Chinese hackers to get the data between 2009 and 2013, and Su attempted to sell some of the information to state-owned Chinese companies, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles that was unsealed Thursday. The men targeted fighter jets such as the F-22 and the F-35 as well as Boeing’s C-17 military cargo

Raleigh, NC - Democrats have long claimed that Republicans abused their legislative powers to elect a disproportionate number of U.S. House members. Now a Florida court is lending credence to their complaint. The full impact of the Florida ruling — plus a similar lawsuit pending in North Carolina — won’t be known for some while. For now, at least, they shine light on the fiercely partisan practice of gerrymandering, in which state officials draw congressional districts to help their party. Republicans and Democrats have engaged in gerrymandering for decades. Republicans refined the practice in 2011,

Australian religious extremist Musa Cerantonio has been arrested in the Philippines after boasting he had travelled to the Middle East to join jihadists. The arrest of 29-year-old Melbourne-born Mr Cerantonio on the island of Cebu early Friday morning is a coup for Western intelligence agencies which have named him as one of the top two influential jihadist “inspirations” for fighters in Syria and Iraq. Mr Cerantonio had announced on Twitter earlier this month that he had made it successfully to the Levant – presumably either Syria or Iraq – after leaving the Philippines where he was believed to be in hiding.

In the wake of last fall’s revelation that the National Security Agency had wiretapped German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cell phone, the report of U.S. intelligence’s involvement in two other likely cases of spying on Germany is mind-boggling. (Snip) What was worth this risk? CIA and White House officials have said little to answer the question. But the fact that German industry has strong ties to both Russia and Iran may offer a clue. So economic and political intelligence about Germany’s contacts with those countries could be high on the list of potential U.S. intelligence targets.
