Ft. Hood soldier to lawmakers:
‘Stripped of God-given right,’ all

A soldier who survived the gruesome murders at Fort Hood last week penned a letter to Texas lawmakers on Monday, urging them to prevent another tragedy from happening again by allowing soldiers to carry personal firearms on base. “Stripped of my God-given Right to arm myself, the only defensive posture I had left was to lie prostrate on the ground, and wait to die,” writes First Lieutenant Patrick Cook of the 49th Transportation Battalion, who witnessed the massacre firsthand. “[T]his past Wednesday I found myself trapped in an enclosed room with fourteen of my fellow Soldiers, one of whom was

This is an outrage. Often, one tragic fatal traffic accident will finally get an overdue signal or stop sign installed at an intersection. But the anti-gun folks in and out of the military evidently --- like training a dog --- need repeated examples before they start to get it.

For starters, how about, after a background check, everyone E-6 and above can carry a sidearm on base. Along with heavy penalties for abusing the privilege. I am sick and tired of these madmen shooting galleries of the unarmed... be it the only theater in Aurora Colorado that advertises itself as gun-free, or our heroes at Fort Hood for the SECOND TIME! already.

You´re absolutely right, #2. My sentiments exactly. Furthermore, I would require all commissioned officers to carry side arms when on duty and in uniform, with the obvious exception of medical doctors. In other words, the good lieutenant should have been packing that day as a matter of routine.

I´m sorry, but I am sure E-4s, 3s,and 2s would feel that they too had been stripped of their God-given right to defend themselves too. What if there were no E-6s and above around to defend them? We are at war here as well as abroad. A carbine or rifle is not appropriate for the circumstances, a side arm is.

A State Department spokeswoman demurred Thursday when asked if the U.S. would respond to Germany’s expulsion of the CIA’s station chief at the embassy in Berlin over fresh allegations of U.S. spying on its European ally. “As you know, we’ve had a range of discussions with Germany over the course of the last several months, and I expect those will continue,” Jen Psaki told a press briefing. “But those will happen through diplomatic channels,” she said, adding that “our relationship is better served by having those take place through those channels.” Asked directly whether the administration was considering expelling somebody

Some remarkable - and frightening - photos of President Obama that show just how disengaged he´s become. As crisis at home and around the world mount, the president is withdrawing and making it plain to those willing to see that the presidency doesn´t interest him anymore. Peggy Noonan´s July 4 op-ed in the Wall Street Journal laid out the case for the president´s apparent ennui: In a truly stunning piece in early June, Politico´s Carrie Budoff Brown and Jennifer Epstein interviewed many around the president and reported a general feeling that events have left him—well, changed. Texas Governor Rick Perry toured the U.S.-Mexico border today without President Barack Obama, who ultimately decided to return to Washington, D.C. this afternoon after making a pit stop for BBQ in Austin. Perry´s office says he took a boat ride down the Rio Grande river and a chopper tour of the Rio Grande Valley with the Texas Department of Public Safety this afternoon. Meanwhile, President Obama spoke at a Democratic Party fundraiser, met with someone who wrote him a letter and gave remarks on the economy before stopping by Franklin Barbeque, where he dropped more than $300 on food for

AUSTIN – Never let it be said there is no such thing as a free lunch, at least when it comes to a presidential visit. On Thursday, after President Obama finished a 40-minute speech at the historic Paramount Theater in downtown Austin, his motorcade sped a few blocks away for a quick lunch at Franklin´s, a noted barbeque spot that was packed as always with a lunch crowd. As presidents tend to do, Obama cut to the front of the line so he could order takeout for his official travel party – offering to pay for the two people he

WASHINGTON — Sen. Kirk, an Illinois Republican, said the children are in the custody of the Health and Human Services Department. His news release did not say where the children are being housed. In the release, Kirk also said the State Department is “unable to confirm if any of these individuals has a criminal record or background.” He added: “If any of these individuals

President Obama was absolutely swamped the other night, staving off the munchies at a pizza party in the Mile High city, hobnobbing as headliner at numerous Democrat shindigs, collecting big bucks from big donors all day. Whew. Exhausting. Especially exhausting must be trying to change pace and pivot through the fundraising parties, knowing they’re thrown by those much maligned “fat cats” (Obama’s words, not mine). The president conveniently disparages these fat cats in public, but in private their group hugs are a whole lot of cuddlin,’ purrin’ and rolling over for more tummy tickling from the one who feeds them.

Central Texas, especially that sweet spot halfway between Dallas and Austin where small swaths of the legendary old prairies remain, is an earthly paradise. Blowsy live oaks spread their heavy limbs beneath cloud-spattered skies, while creeks and rivers—most prominently the meandering Brazos—ripple alongside gently rolling pastures gilded with waving grasses. These natural glories are precisely what led Laura and George W. Bush to choose the area for their Prairie Chapel Ranch, the retreat they completed in 2001, just after he became the 43rd president of the United States. This crisis must be seen to be understood," the post to Twitter read. The hashtag "#SecureTheBorder" followed the two-sentence tweet. A photo of Perry seated next to DPS Director Col. As the political war over minors crossing the border continues to escalate, Texas Governor Rick Perry met with President Obama yesterday and demanded that he beef up border patrols and seek changes to federal law that would expedite the removal of arriving minors. For his part, Obama prodded Perry to rally Congressional Republicans to pass the $3.7 billion in funding to expedite removals and provide care the president has asked for. In a good piece, Amie Parnes of the Hill observes that Perry “has seized the spotlight in recent days to become the national face of opposition to President Obama’s

Some (including some Democrats) are saying that the crisis on the Southwestern border is President Obama’s Hurricane Katrina. But there are at least two fundamental differences between the illegal immigration fiasco and Katrina. First, the response to Hurricane Katrina was actually the largest and the fastest response to any natural disaster in history, as Popular Mechanics, as I recall, later documented. Second, President Bush didn’t cause the hurricane. The current disaster is entirely attributable to Barack Obama’s willful refusal to enforce the immigration laws, in violation of his oath of office. Is Obama’s subversion of the nation’s laws an impeachable offense?

Despite fiery statements issued by Hamas spokesmen over the past 48 hours, it was obvious Tuesday night that the Islamist movement was searching for ways to rid itself of the current escalation. Hamas feels that it has been forced into a confrontation with Israel – one that it did not want at this stage because of its increased isolation and financial crisis. The massive Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours have surprised Hamas and other Palestinian groups. Hamas apparently expected a limited response to the recent rocket attacks on Israeli cities and towns. But as the

President Obama’s ultimate weakness may be that he believes his own blarney. A year ago, Mr. Obama boasted in a “fireside” Web chat that his “is the most transparent administration in history.” There was not the slightest hint of irony. He may actually believe it. In a testy letter to the president on Tuesday, the group decried the “slick non-answers” and cold shoulders they’re getting from Mr. Obama’s representatives, who have restricted access to any information they consider embarrassing to the administration. “The stifling of free expression,” the signers

President Barack Obama does not believe his temporary amnesty program for illegal immigrant children has exacerbated the border crisis even though the number of illegal immigrant kids crossing the border spiked the year after he unilaterally enacted the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in 2012.
