Uber Is Kicking Its City-Domination Plan
Into Gear With an On-Demand Messenger Service

New York Magazine, by Kevin Roose

I´ve long had a hunch that Uber, the ubiquitous car-on-demand service, is gearing up for something much bigger than just taking people from point A to point B. The company clearly wants to use its car-service foothold to expand into a large, multi-armed transportation hub for cities — a "digital mesh," in one of its investor´s words, that can take anything anywhere, immediately, with a few taps of an app. Tomorrow, Uber is tipping its hand by launching an experimental line of Uber couriers in Manhattan who will deliver packages on foot or by bike for as little as $15. It´s

Once messaging is accepted, then small parcels is next. How about grocery delivery?

Supply will create its own demand

Retired officers poised to profit after
Pentagon’s alarmist climate change report
Washington Times, by Rowan Scarborough    Original Article

Retired military officers deeply involved in the climate change movement — and some in companies positioned to profit from it — spearheaded an alarmist global warming report this month that calls on the Defense Department to ramp up spending on what it calls a man-made problem. The report, which the Obama administration immediately hailed as a call to action, was issued not by a private advocacy group but by a Pentagon-financed think tank that trumpets “absolute objectivity.” The research was funded by a climate change group that is also one of the think tank’s main customers.

Another week, another scandal. From Fast and Furious at the ATF to the Pigford fraud at the Department of Agriculture, the IRS’ political targeting to the State Department’s Benghazi mess, the healthcare.gov debacle at HHS to spying at the NSA and the DOJ, President Obama is running out of agencies and departments to defend in his two years left in office. This White House has either had the worst luck in recent memory or it is responsible for breaches of public trust so vast, it’s no wonder public faith in our government is at a record low. And now, we must add the

Yesterday would have been her 102nd birthday and I´m sorry I missed it, but my sharp-eyed fellow-traveller David Hinz at The Minority Report celebrated with a lively dance on the old fraud´s grave. He doesn´t mince his words: Rachel Carson – poster girl of the international eco movement – was a "mass murderer" to rival Stalin and Pol Pot. Was she really responsible for the deaths of as many as 50 million people? That´s just an estimate. What we do know is that her landmark 1962 bestseller Silent Spring – the book that set a million and one green activists on

As a candidate for president in 1988, Michael Dukakis famously proclaimed: “This election is not about ideology; it’s about competence.” It wasn’t a winning argument. Dukakis ran as the architect of the so-called “Massachusetts Miracle,” the state’s mid-1980s economic boom. But the miracle was turning into a fiscal meltdown, and, as it did, Dukakis’s once-commanding lead went down the drain. On Election Day, he lost to George H. W. Bush in a 40-state landslide. Dukakis played down ideology because he didn’t want to be tagged as a liberal, and he played up competence because that’s what all candidates do.

CARACAS- Venezuela´s foreign minister on Monday rebuked his U.S. counterpart, John Kerry, for criticizing the handling of street protests and reiterated accusations Washington wants to topple the socialist government. In the U.S. government´s strongest comments since demonstrations began in February, Kerry said last week that Venezuela´s government had shown "total failure" of good faith in now-suspended talks to stem the unrest. In Venezuela´s worst violence in a decade, 42 people have died during months of daily protests demanding President Nicolas Maduro´s departure and solutions to economic hardships.

During President Obama‘s surprise trip to Afghanistan on Sunday, the White House mistakenly exposed the identity of the Central Intelligence Agency’s top official in Kabul. According to the Washington Post, the officer’s name (which has been redacted by the press to protect the individual’s safety) was inadvertently included among a list distributed to the press showing the names senior U.S. officials participating in the president’s trip. The mistaken list reportedly identified the individual as “Chief of Station,” the CIA’s term for the highest-ranking spy official in a given country. After the White House recognized the error, they quickly issued a revised list. The

Much of Elliot Rodger’s video and written manifestos pointed to a frustration over women not finding him attractive as motive for the killing spree he went on Friday night near UC Santa Barbara that left seven dead including himself. But according to one “expert” on Fox News this weekend, it was his “homosexual impulses” that may have driven him to kill. Dr. Robi Ludwig, a psychotherapist and reality show host, said her theories about Rodger’s motives began to evolve the more she listened to his disturbing rants. “When I was first listening to him, I was like, ‘Oh, he’s angry with

Liberal Democrats feel the wind is at their backs, making it all the more irksome for them that Hillary Clinton could be their presidential nominee in 2016. For many on the left, Clinton is the woman who supported the Iraq war, ran to the right of President Obama and is associated with the Wall Street-friendly centrism espoused by her husband, former President Bill Clinton. Progressives feel they are in a political golden age in which questions about income inequality are growing louder, anti-gay marriage laws are falling and the growing Hispanic electorate regards the GOP with skepticism. Given all that, they don’t

The French economist, whose 577-page tome Capital in the Twenty-First Century has become an unlikely must-read for business leaders and politicians alike, said it was ridiculous to suggest that his central thesis on rising inequality was incorrect. The controversy blew up when the FT accused Piketty of errors in transcribing numbers, as well as cherry-picking data or not using original sources. The newspaper concluded there was little evidence in Piketty´s original sources to bear out his theory that the

One government agency has decided that the results of employee ratings are too discriminatory, and eliminated the process entirely. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced on Monday that it will now award all employees the highest rating regardless of performance reviews. The CFPB, which oversees transactions in the financial sector for the federal government, decided to no longer conduct employee reviews because there were just too many apparent “significant disparities” between the races, ages, and locations of its employees. First Lady Michelle Obama is moving to quell the revolt against the school meal nutrition standards that she helped set in place. House Republicans are supporting a measure that would allow some school districts to opt out of the standards—if they can prove that it is affecting their school budgets. In response, Michelle Obama is scheduled to meet with school leaders and experts on nutrition Tuesday to discuss the importance of federal regulation of school meals. The strict rules, passed in 2010, limit the amount of fat, calories, sugar, and sodium served during school meals and requires more whole grains. “Mrs. Obama will stress

The White House has launched an internal probe after its press office inadvertently outed the top CIA official in Afghanistan -- a national security blunder that could put that individual at risk. A spokeswoman with the National Security Council confirmed to Fox News that the White House chief of staff asked White House Counsel Neil Eggleston to “look into what happened” and make recommendations on “how the administration can improve processes and make sure something like this does not happen again.” The brief statement from the National Security Council was the first on-the-record comment made by the administration since the

Great lives, fully lived, cast long shadows. Fifty years after his death, it’s not unusual to hear people rank Douglas MacArthur among America’s worst generals—alongside Benedict Arnold and William Westmoreland. His critics say he was insubordinate and arrogant, callous in dealing with dissent, his Korean War command studded with mistakes. “MacArthur could never see another sun, or even a moon for that matter, in the heavens, as long as he was the sun,” once said President Eisenhower, who had served under MacArthur in the Pacific. Some of what the critics say is undoubtedly true, but much of what they say

Friday´s shooting rampage in California that left three people dead from gunfire and another three stabbed to death is again raising calls for Congress to revisit various shades of gun control legislation. But if other, more deadly recent high-profile shootings weren´t enough of a catalyst to spur change, election-year politics is sure to stop short any serious renewed efforts in the near-term. The Republican-led House has let the Democratic-led Senate wrestle over dealing with gun control since the December 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. The Senate did manage to bring up a bipartisan bill to

Give Barack Obama credit. He never claimed he had the executive experience many Americans feel is essential for a president. Go back to October 2006. There was much buzz that Sen. Obama, newly arrived in Washington, would run for the White House. "You´ve been a United States senator less than two years, you don´t have any executive experience. Are you ready to be president?" the late Tim Russert asked Obama on NBC."Well, I´m not sure anybody is ready to be president before they´re president," Obama responded. This weekend we celebrate Memorial Day in honor of our American servicemen and women who have sacrificed their lives defending us both at home and abroad. Many of our troops enlist in the military upon adulthood and have served in wars before their classmates have even graduated from college. These men and women are true American heroes and we must protect them just as well as they protect us. Unfortunately, despite President Obama’s Memorial Day proclamation that we shall “never forget” the sacrifices of our soldiers, he and Secretary of State John Kerry have forgotten about a living American hero in
