Millions of Americans aren´t working. Why?
CNBC, by Allison Linn

Original Article

Call it the million-worker mystery. A large chunk of American adults are no longer in the labor force. That has left economists divided over how many of them are voluntarily not working-or even looking for work-because they wanted to retire, go to school or take care of family members, versus how many have been forced out because they couldn´t find a job. (snip) Shierholz estimates that there are currently more than 5 million missing workers who are not included in the unemployment rate because they are neither working nor looking for work, but who might be if the job market

The ´real´ unemployment rate is probably 12%.

What an utterly insulting and superficial piece.
Ms. Linn doesn´t even come within a mile of answering the "why?" , although anyone who hasn´t been in a complete coma since January 2009 knows damn well why.

As for myself, I am on strike and refuse to work and pay taxes to our Marxist government. Its not worth the effort, but moreover, giving our government money is simply helping them to do their evil deeds against me.

The real ´unemployment´ rate in the US is about 40%.

All of the ´Media´ Bullsnarckles to the contrary change nothing.

I know lots of people and almost half of them are out of work.

Many of the ´office´ types are working but damn few of the ´actually do something´ types have a job.

Communists have no need for people who ´actually do something´ because they believe that the problem with America is that we do too much. And profit too much.

Why? Because the Democrats are in the process of fundamentally transforming this country into a 3rd world banana republic. They are intentionally degrowing the economy. This is no accident. Remember the famous words by Hollings: "There is too much consumin´ goin´ on out there!". Well that is why the economy is being de-grown. Put less money in people pockets, necessarily skyrocket the costs of health care, medicine, insurance, food, fuel, energy, and overall living expenses combined with less and less consumable income and guess what happens. There is less consumin´ goin´ on out there. The plan is working perfectly. In their eyes this is saving the planet by consuming less energy and putting less pressure on resources. Combine this with their no so secret population growth control agenda being implemented by Planned Parenthood and you can add thousands of barrels of oil hundreds of gallons of water and tons of food that will not be consumed by all those hungry babies over the course of their little lives, and planet earth is safe. For now.

Agree with OP that the unemployment rate is probably around 12% rather than the 6.9 %reported last week? But the more important figure is the participation rate which is now around 60% compared to 67% back in the sixties? This is the measurement of people actually working or looking for work. The big increase reflects the large number of people who have simply left the work force. They are no longer looking for work. That is a bad sig.

I´m more aligned with 11 & 13 on this. What incentive do I have to work? So I can give my money to the communists? I´m withholding my tax payments by limiting my income...and the unemployment may not be 40%, but well into the 20+% is probably more accurate, not counting the poor participation rate which I am contributing to.

Can´t imagine owning a business in this environment with tax, administrative, and compliance costs...and since I´m generally self employed...I don´t.

Thank you, #19. That´s a better article than this posted one, though it doesn´t say much about the "war on business" attitude of the administration and the Dems in Congress. Keep piling on regulations, including ObamaCare, declare your intent to destroy whole industries (like coal), and you won´t get a lot of new jobs.

I also don´t understand the idea that baby boomers´ retirement just takes people out of the work force. If they are retiring from jobs, then someone else has to do those jobs, so that shouldn´t reduce the work force.

Sorry for a second post but in answer to #32, my job was basically going away because of outsourcing to India, so when offered even a sort of mediocre early retirement deal I agreed to it.

A lot of what is happening in high-tech is that many people - especially older ones - are being forced out and "encouraged, to leave, and their jobs are gradually being piled on the shoulders of those left until they in turn give up and leave or have nervous breakdowns or die from the stress. By the time I got out I think I had absorbed work from at least a dozen people myself. It´s ugly everywhere. I do sympathize most with people like those on this thread that want work and can´t find it.

Jobs like the one I had (when it was good) could come back in a heartbeat if the communists were thwarted and the country got back to freedom. So I now see working for that as one of my jobs....

My employer has reduced head count in the United States by over 200,000 people in the last 25 years. Considering they have hired people in the United States during that time, the number of people actually let go is higher. Lots of outsourcing, but the new workers lack skills and experience.

The employer demands loyalty and obedience. Workers put in long hours sacrificing their health, their families, and everything else just to please the employer. It doesn´t help. There is no future for many people. They are just waiting to get tapped. Lots of people have health problems.

The people running the company are not investing in the company to reach short term profit goals, and are behaving more like looters rather than corporate executives. Every now and then the executives sell off a part of the company for the cash.

Add in a corrupt government, and the picture is complete.

People see the writing on the wall, and plan accordingly. Alot of people are leaving rather than waiting around to be terminated especially if they have managed to save.

Who is John Galt, indeed.

WASHINGTON – Has President Barack Obama “checked out”? It’s one thing if hardened critics like Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly ask whether the Obama presidency is “imploding,” as she did last month , citing a string of foreign policy debacles and domestic scandals. Or if Republican lobbyist Ed Rogers says Obama “seems to have taken something like an early retirement,” as he did in his Washington Post blog earlier this month, finding that the president’s recent speeches reveal “a state of mind that suggests he has checked out.” It is another, however, if the chief U.S. commentator for the Financial Times,

Washington — Is racial animosity behind some political criticism of the Obama administration? That’s what Attorney General Eric Holder said on Sunday. The exact phrase he used was “racial animus,” which he said motivates some of his and Obama’s political opponents. (Snip) At the right-leaning "Hot Air!" Noah Rothman used even tougher language. The Obama administration long ago perfected the art of cultivating the sense among its defenders that lingering racism inspires most of its critics, according to Mr. Rothman. Mr. McCain, the highest-profile Republican of the U.S. Senate’s “Gang of Eight” that came up with amnesty as the solution to the immigration crisis — and it truly is a crisis — is finally taking a hard line against President Obama for his encouraging the tidal wave of illegal aliens swamping the southwestern border. “There has to be a halt to this,” Mr. McCain thundered Sunday on CNN. “That’s what we want, and the best way to do that is for planeloads of these young people to be returning to their country of origin

It had to come sometime, and it came in one very bad week for the Democrats: that the many big problems with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama finally grew too great for the press to ignore. Obama in his own different way is heading towards Nixon-like levels of weirdness, as, beaten down by the failures regarding his ventures, he appears to have quit his own job. A.B. Stoddard of the Hill says in effect he has stopped being president and chooses to live in a world of his own, shutting out the problems that have become overwhelming, giving dinners where he talks

The headline in the Washington Post on June 4 was clear: Rove-backed American Crossroads won’t get involved in Cochran runoff Said the Post story the day after Tea Party favorite Chris McDaniel had defeated six-term Mississippi GOP Senator Thad Cochran in the first round of the state’s GOP primary: American Crossroads, a GOP establishment organization, has decided to shift its political focus almost entirely to the general election and will not be spending money in the likely runoff election to decide the Mississippi Senate nomination that was virtually deadlocked after Tuesday night. Senate Budget Committee ranking member Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) has warned all of his colleagues in Congress that President Barack Obama’s new immigration strategy—his plans to legalize millions of illegal alien adults through executive power—could destroy America as we know it. “I write to inform you of a development that threatens the foundation of our constitutional Republic,” Sessions, Congress’s top immigration hawk, wrote in a letter that was hand-delivered to all 535 members of Congress on Monday and provided exclusively to Breitbart News. Sessions cites a recent report from the National Journal, in which reporter Major Garrett detailed how, despite the ongoing

Attorney General Eric Holder encouraged Americans not to forget race while working for justice and equality in their country. “As it stands, our society is not yet color blind -- nor should it be -- given the disparities that still afflict and divide us.” Holder explained, “We must be color brave, and we must never forget that all are made better and more prosperous if all are given equal opportunities.” Holder made his remarks during a speech at Howard University on Tuesday for the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Civil Rights Act. “We must take into account not only the
