Anti-vaccine movement is
giving diseases a 2nd life

USA Today, by Yamiche Alcindor

Original Article

Kathryn Riffenburg decided on a closed casket for her baby´s funeral. She didn´t want her family to see what whooping cough, her son´s first illness, had done to 9-week-old Brady Alcaide. The nearly forgotten disease, which has in recent years afflicted thousands of Americans, left Brady´s tiny body swollen and unrecognizable. So his mother dressed him in a white baptismal suit and hat and tucked him into a tiny white casket. Brady´s burial came just four weeks after his first laugh — inspired by her version of I´m a Little Teapot — and two weeks after his family learned that he had

I had it 10 years ago as an adult. My vaccine had worn off apparently. It is a horrible disease and easily could kill a child from its physically debilitating symptoms. You cough spasmodically for 20 hours a day, nearly vomiting on a continuous basis in the process.

Too bad there is no vaccine for stupidity. I really think our society is becoming progressively more and more ignorant and stupid. I don´t understand what has happened to our world. My heart goes out for that poor little 10 year old boy who lost half of his body to something that was almost entirely preventable.

How many of these diseases are making a comeback because we are welcoming immigrants from God knows where with open arms?

I had measles as a child. I still remember how sick I was and how worried my parents were. I was thrilled when they developed a vaccine and my children and grandchildren are all vaccinated.

Hold on just a minute! If your child had no bad reactions to a vaccination, it´s easy to judge. I´ve had 4 children, the first two did just fine with their´s. The second two was a whole nother story. Each time,I´m holding an infant who´s screaming as though they´re being skinned alive for hours and hours. The first time I was alone with two other small children, I called the Pediatrician´s office and the woman who answered knew me for years and asked "What the hell is going on?" I said "I don´t know!!!" The pain seemed to be located in his head, he could not tolerate being tipped at any angle - I had to keep him held upright just to get the screaming to subside a decibel or so. The dr.s office could do nothing, once it´s in the child there´s no getting it out.

Shortly after this I met another mother who´s neighbor´s daughter had the same reaction to the WC vaccine. She gave it to her daughter again - this time it left the child brain damaged.

As I said before, I went through this again with my l last child 20 months later. This time with 3 other children AND a repairman in the house. I called my husband to come home because I could not deal with this alone again.

My question is WHY do we have to pump babies full of this stuff so soon?? The horrors experienced with the Whooping Cough vaccine should NEVER EVER happen to a child!! I know we have medical professionals here. Can anyone give a cogent answer??

Part of this problem is that some kids have not reacted well to the vaccines. The rumor spreads that vaccines are bad. Consequently some kids are not vaccinated and get the disease, survive it OK but spread it. In the 1950´s my mother organized a protest to stop polio. The local school was planning on opening several weeks early after a hot summer when polio infections were high. The mothers got the school to delay the school opening. I know my parents were thrilled when the whole school got polio vaccines 4 years later.

I get my kids vaccinated. I would never believe that loon Jenny Mcarthy. On the other hand, I can´t blame parents for not believing the government either. Our government lies to us about everything, just last week. It came out that the EPA was testing people using unsafe methods.

However, doctors note that all drugs — even aspirin — have risks, and none is 100% effective.

Which brings us to the simple but critical question - Who should get to decide? You may not like the decision that some people make regarding vaccines, but is it not ultimately their decision for themselves and their children? Or do we believe that this is another situation where Government should intervene and demand compliance, ´for the good of all´?

I´m with the earlier poster who recounted his mother´s fight against polio. I am in that age group, too, with terrified parents and some of my friends getting polio and one ending up in an iron-lung for the rest of her life. No one knew how polio was contracted. Dr. Salk and then Dr. Sabin changed that world. I don´t believe many parents of those times rejected polio vaccine for their children. Yes, it would have been their decision, but I will generalize here and say not getting your children protected against easily preventable (and potentially fatal) diseases is as unthinkable as those parental loons who took their toddler and baby on an ocean trip in a 35-foot boat.

We are having these problems because we are letting people in from countries that do nothing to control these diseases. Blame the Liberals who want their votes and don´t care about what is right.

I would NOT immunize my child, at birth, with a hepatitis vaccine. Nor would my child get the varicella (chicken pox) or the HPV shot. Polio, meningitis, whooping cough, measles - yeah. But that´s it. I saw first hand a perfectly normal child to the age of one get the MMR and develop autism. I firmly believe there is a connection somewhere along the line.

A collection of anectdotes, stories and experiences does not make science. Yet these same people scared to death of vaccines will drive their car, drink alcohol, smoke, overeat, etc., despite clear science that these can be harmful. It is difficult to fix emotional thoughts.

A related article from Forbes about an event Chili´s restaurants was going to have today - and then cancelled. Giving 10% of its take at the table today to the National Autism Association, which "feels" and "believes" that vaccines - given equal weight with genetics and "environmental insults" - may be the casue of autism. Confusing correlation with causation.

There is no room for "feels" and "believes" when it comes to medical science and health issues.

This is an interesting read:

Chili´s Autism Awareness Problem
http://www.forbes.com/sites/emilywillingham/2014/04/05/chilis-autism-awareness-problem/

The fact that a child, who happens to begin to show signs of autism was also vaccinated, is correlation. Many, many children are vaccinated who DO NOT show signs of autism. From what they do know, the autism was there from birth - probably due to genetics.

I believe a great part of the fanatical opposition to vaccines has to do with parents of autistic children who cannot believe it could have anything to do with the child´s genetic background. Them. They feel it has to be something else.

Having grown up in the 1940s and ´50s, I remember what a great advance and benefit the polio and small pox vaccines were to people in that day. As a result, I have been favorably disposed to vaccination. But these days there are more such vaccines than I even know about, and I have become aware that some persons are quite opposed to early vaccination. Reading various medical opinion I´m surprised to find that there are doctors that are not supportive of vaccination. Those opposed say some vaccines are unnecessary, some say they are contaminated, and there are other reasons they oppose them. I would just say, at this point, that parental choice should be respected unless there is clear evidence to do otherwise.

No vaccine is perfectly safe so yes, there will always be a handful of bad outcomes in a nation of 313 million. But to go unvaccinated is to hand your children loaded pistols and send them off to play.

Part of the problem seems to be that few people under age 60 have first hand experience of the terrors of an epidemic of infectious diseases. The one in a million odds of a negative reaction to the vaccine now seem more exigent to some than the much greater odds of serious complications from the diseases themselves.

We have a wonderful, conservative pediatrician who took care of me as a child and is now taking care of my toddler. I am not anti vaccine but nonetheless expressed my tiny doubt during the first round of big shots. Mostly junk science celeb stuff that I know better than to believe. She said she felt so bad for my generation as parents because we have so much information to sort through. Every single decision can be googled first and social media makes you panic over rumors and symptoms. She said trust your gut, consider her recommendations as a professional, and ignore the noise. She would do what I wanted. That was excellent as advice and I went with all of the vaccines. She is absolutely right, my generation is losing our "gut trusting" abilities in the flood of information. It goes beyond parenting.

My kids are all past the baby and toddler phase, but if I were to do it again, I would insist that they get just one vaccination at a time, and not as newborns. Sorry, but I don´t trust the push to pump babies full of every chemical and virus the "state" decides to promote. Why? Because I don´t trust Obama´s horrible, heartless health-care "experts."

If you had your children vaccinated 25 or more years ago, you have no idea how many more vaccines there are. What concerned parents (which some of you name call) want is a slower vaccine schedule, acknowledgement that some children have side affects and they are precious also, and a real investigation into exactly what is in the vaccines. And it wouldn´t hurt to quit letting foreigners in unchecked.

OK, I´m stupid. Maybe they will eventually come up with a cure for it, but I likely wouldn´t take it.

I had my last vaccine 40 years ago.
Was constantly sick despite (or because) my parents had me vaccinated for everything that came along. Risked military court martial by refusing, starting with that Flu vaccine that killed or ruined so many thousands of peoples lives.
... Pretty much never been sick since I quit letting them inject germs into my body.

And as I listen to the TV commercials every ten minutes, pushing every sort of drug that the side effect warnings sound a heck of a lot worse than the symptoms they are supposed to alleviate, I can only shake my head in disgust.

Then a minute later, hear the commercials from ambulance chasing lawyers wanting people to sue the drug manufacturers because some drug harmed tham, I don´t know whether to laugh or cry.

Not a luddite... I accept that some of them can be lifesaving. But blindly following what the government and the pill pushers want you to take ain´t necessarily the smartest thing you can do either.

#20, TB is a growing threat, particularly in the border states. I have read that there was a gap in medical diagnosis and treatment because younger doctors weren´t trained to detect it. The US medical profession considered tuberculosis to be a third world problem. However, now physicians are watching for it and know what to do with it. Another threat, though, is that diabetes patients are particularly vulnerable to TB and doctors are now being cautioned to test their diabetes patients for it.

Thank God, polio is now gone. India was the last vulnerable population and it´s considered to polio-free now that the last case was three years ago.

Obviously, should have my contacts in. Loose borders.

A child´s immune system isn´t totally formed for several years. An overload of meds can prove too much as it did to my friend´s daughter. Perfectly well child and in the car on the way home, totally changed. No speech at all and cerebral palsy. A statistic? So many years of heartache for these parents now for twenty or so years.

Dang iPad.
A huge vote for vaccines on the recommended schedule! My husband and I were of a generation that got all the "childhood diseases. They were not harmless. How many of us knew children whose pregnant mamas had contracted rubella, a mild, common nuisance ailment in children? Those kids were born with severe hearing and eyesight deficits. How many of us lived in dread of polio, now nearly eradicated? How many of us still have smallpox vaccination scars, now no longer a problem, thanks to vaccines. Anybody remember what happened when measles was brought by sailors to the new world and Polynesia? Anybody? Mumps sterility?Chickenpox scars and pneumonia? Oh, yeah. Vaccinations are bad. Because, autism, ya know. Unless you read actual science. The irresponsible and gullible idiots who get all their scientific information and wacky anti-vaccination superstition from supermarket tabloids and counter-culture Internet garbage deserve what they get. What a shame their children, and those they expose who are still too young to be vaccinated, don´t deserve it.

Ever since I was a lowly medical corpsman in the 1950´s I have know every one´s body is made of different chemical makeup. Thus it is that one can take a certain drug and be helped while another could take the same drug and die.

So it is with vaccines. Everyone insists we all take the flu vaccine. Like a good young airman I did...wham 10 days in the hospital. They marked my records as allergic. I have not taken one since even though the "experts" say us old guys should take them. Horse manure, I refuse to take it. I also refuse to take that pneumonia shot.

I´m sure those drugs help others but I am doing just find through every flu season. Sure, I may die of something one of these days, maybe before I reach 90, but then we all have to die of one thing or another but I do not wish to rush the process with drugs that may kill me.

I agree #11. All the major deadly diseases, yes on the vaccines, even though my first had a reaction to the pertusis vaccine. It was a scary 4 days, and I held my breath when the pertussis was administered to my younger two. Chicken pox, which is probably not deadly, I didn´t see the need to get the vaccine. And for HPV, the science is still out on that one to my mind.

There are risks to vaccination. The best solution is to have 100% vaccination rate for everybody else and get the benefit of heard immunity for yourself. How does that work out with illegal immigrants where the law does not apply? They get to be the ones protected by the vaccination of law abiding citizens! I note a remark in the article that many people in the anti vaccination movement do not trust the government. Do we see a pattern here? There is a revolving door between the Pharma industry and the government agency FDA which regulates them. I would inquire of any medical expert where his financial interests are before listening to his medical opinion. Doctors can be corrupted by money just like anybody else. This article is one sided. To study the other side and some expert medical opinion from doctors and researchers who do no live off the Government/Big Pharma industry go to: www.vaccinationinformationnetwork.com

#22. While its true polio has mostly disappeared from the West and Europe, its still epidemic in in places like Nigeria, where the village witch doctors consider the Sabin and Salk vaccines Western plots to sterilize the Black Man.

Unfortunately, the more superstition (and politics) rules, the less likely the Nigerians are ever going to be polio-free.

Some of this is driven by a subculture who treat anything non-´natural´ as unholy. Perhaps related to the morality message in the movie ´Noah´.

I can sympathize with #5´s own vaccine horror. It´s a special sort of anguish to imagine something you´ve done with the intent of protecting your child is causing great suffering in them. But this has me confused:

"Shortly after this I met another mother who´s neighbor´s daughter had the same reaction to the WC vaccine. She gave it to her daughter again - this time it left the child brain damaged."

Her daughter´s body reacted horribly to the vaccination, so she had them repeat it? I wonder whether the daughter´s subsequent brain damage wasn´t inherited.

When I taught science to middle school kids and later pregnant teen girls I added a unit on dread diseases to my curriculum. I can make a "whoop" like whooping cough victims do. I described how every classroom in my youth had a kid in a wheelchair from polio. I described in agonizing detail the effects of both types measles on Native populations and the unborn. When the meningitis vaccine came in I added descriptions of babies we had at the school who almost died and when the chicken pox vaccine came in I referenced a community member who had become horribly scarred by the disease. You cannot make an informed decision on vaccines unless you know the diseases they will prevent. My students had one of the highest rates of vaccination in our state.

"CDC admits vaccines contain mercury, aluminum and formaldehyde:
Vaccine, of course, still contain toxic neurotoxins such as mercury, aluminum, MSG and formaldehyde -- all openly admitted by the Centers for Disease Control. These toxic substances are injected into children, going directly into their tissue and blood where they are circulated to their brains. Once in the brain, these neurotic substances can and do cause permanent brain damage. They can also cause damage to the digestive tract, as is common in autistic children.

My FIL, a physician, was deeply in debt to bogeyman BigPharma. His aunt lost all of her siblings and both parents to pertussis. She somehow squeaked through, and that deadly disease passed into the history books, for a while. His eldest son spent fifth grade in bed, paralyzed by the town´s last case of polio. None of my husband´s younger siblings got it. Another big thanks to the evil BigPharma. My beautiful daughter´s forehead still bears chickenpox scars. Her beautiful daughter will never be so scarred. Thanks, BigPharma! My son avoided mumps, thanks to BigPharma, and I have grandsons who also won´t suffer its side effects. Greedy BigPharma, the meanies, want to sell you their HPV vaccine. Horrors. This means they won´t get to sell your daughters chemo drugs for deadly cervical cancer.
I have nieces who believe every silly health scare rumor they read, and I pray their flat-earth gullibility won´t cost them everything. Remember the graveyards full of tiny tombstones? THAT wasn´t BigPharma´s fault.

There are many responsible, well-educated American parents in your same boat. There are many outstanding, Board-certified physicians who have real reservations about the current "recommended" vaccination schedules, etc. Behind the scenes, they absolutely rearrange it, sometimes delete certain shots when it comes to THEIR children/grandchildren. (Oh yes they do.) However, they dare not criticize in public, print or in their offices. Medicine is very political. If you want a healthy practice, you keep quiet.

For what it´s worth, I don´t think all of the vaccines should be given at one time.

I had whooping cough about ten years ago and would not wish that on a baby. As an older individual, I am grateful for the polio and smallpox vaccines.

What is coming across the border is not checked for vaccinations and at one time this state was #3 for TB.

Here in Austin we recently had a small child die of whooping cough. It had been about a decade since the previous death. If you skip vaccines you are exposing my mom, a kidney transplant patient, to potential death for your celebrity-spread junk science. She takes drugs to suppress her immune system. She relies upon the herd immunity of the vaccinated to keep her from being exposed.

When ABC’s long-popular daytime program The View returns in September for its 18th season, creator Barbara Walters will no longer have an ownership stake, and longtime executive producer Bill Geddie won’t be at the helm. “He won’t be back,” a person familiar with the inner workings of the show told The Daily Beast, confirming one of the major changes--including the enforced departures of panelists Sherri Shepherd

Federal employees, like all Americans, are entitled to hold passionate political beliefs. Most executive branch federal employees, however, may not engage in certain political activities, thanks to an anti-conflict of interest principle enshrined in a federal law called the Hatch Act. To wit, President Bush requested the resignation of his GSA administrator in 2008 after the US Office of Special Counsel determined she had violated federal law by participating in a video conference with Karl Rove and sending out partisan letters. (The New York Times was scandalized at the time, though I strangely can´t find their editorial calling for Kathleen

NEW YORK – Conservative filmmaker Dinesh D´Souza wants to know why his latest docudrama "America: Imagine the World Without Her" was buried by mega search engine Google. "I certainly hope this is not intentional. But how long does it take a technical company to fix a technical problem? “D´Souza told FOX411. “We´re trying to be patient, but this is making it harder for people to get accurate information about the film." Here´s the technical problem: When one normally searches the name of a current movie plus the word “movie” in Google, showtimes and more information for the film typically show up. “America”

Seventeen percent of people in the United States say immigration is the nation’s top problem, according to a Gallup poll released Wednesday. That´s up from 5 percent in June, and is the highest number Gallup has registered for immigration since 2006, when 15 percent said it was the nation´s most pressing problem. Gallup’s new survey found immigration is virtually tied with “dissatisfaction with government” as the nation´s top problem. The economy and unemployment rank below immigration and “dissatisfaction with government" as top problems, the new poll found. Only 8 percent now rate healthcare as the top problem, down from 16 percent in January, when

The headlines last week were all about the potential windfall: A second appraisal of works in the Detroit Institute of Arts´ collection had come in and the number was several orders of magnitude larger than the first. The city needs a valuation because the museum´s collection is in play under the current municipal bankruptcy proceeding. Back in December, Christie´s had come in with $454 million to $867 million, that low-high figure the equivalent of an auction "estimate" ranging between a number below which a work won´t sell and another representing its likely maximum hammer price. (Of course, auctions often break

How would you feel if someone promised to give you a car, and then reneged on that pledge? That’s how all Americans should feel when it comes to ObamaCare -- because Barack Obama’s failed and discredited campaign promise to lower health insurance premiums has cost the average American family an amount equal to the price of many new cars. During his 2008 campaign, one of then-Senator Obama’s most audacious promises was that his health plan would reduce premiums by $2,500 for the average family. His repeatedly made his pledge on videotape; you can view those promises here. But health insurance premiums

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has identified a massive new threat to domestic airline security. No, it’s not ISIS, Al Qaeda, or the Taliban. It’s the dead battery on your smartphone. Last week, TSA announced what it called “enhanced security measures” in which passengers will be required to power up their cell phones before boarding their flight. According to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, TSA has “assesse[d] the global threat environment and reevaluate[d] the measures we take to promote aviation security.” Your cell phone is evidently part of a “global threat environment,” and so it must be turned on in order

The Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) latest report says that although the federal deficit this year is the lowest of the Obama era, in the near future, it is expected to skyrocket to World War II heights. The years between 2009 and 2012 saw the largest recorded federal government deficits since 1946, based on percentage of the economy. And although the White House also reported that the deficit this year is the lowest of the Obama administration, there is little reason for celebration. Currently, the amount of federal debt is exactly 74 percent of the economy, and if measures aren’t taken to reign

CNN chose to describe the recently detained Jose Antonio Vargas, longtime journalist for U.S. publications and legal citizen of the Philippines, as a “symbol of the immigration debate.” The news network aired his documentary, Undocumented, several times. At the heart of Vargas’s viewpoint — and CNN’s decision to refer to him as a symbol, as opposed to, say, a scofflaw — is the notion that it is unfair to deny citizenship to him, considering his circumstances. Vargas came to the United States from the Philippines when he was 12 and didn’t learn he was in the country illegally until he was

CIUDAD HIDALGO, Mexico – Mexico is promising to stem the flow of Central American migrants to the United States by tightening control at its notoriously porous Guatemalan border. But messages from the country´s top two leaders in little more than a week have provided few details on how. And the scene on the ground is business as usual. Dozens of Central Americans who paid $1.50 a head could be seen this week crossing the broad Suchiate River on improvised rafts of inner tubes and wooden boards, in full view of Mexican police on the shore and immigration agents posted on

In his message to the “Mexico/Holy See Colloquium on Migration and Development,” Pope Francis characterized the tens of thousands of illegal immigrants that have crossed the U.S. southern border as a product of globalization, suggesting that the phenomenon is happening worldwide. Francis proclaimed, “Despite the large influx of migrants present in all continents and in almost all countries, migration is still seen as an emergency, or as a circumstantial and sporadic fact, while instead it has now become a hallmark of our society and a challenge.” Emmer McCarthy for Vatican Radio said Francis expressed his concern for “the tens of thousands of

The First Lady of these United States has declared war on Chick-fil-A. It seems the home of plump juicy breasts and hot buttered buns has run afoul of the new Smart Snacks in School program. The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School. They’ve just learned they will no longer be allowed to buy Chick-fil-A

“Trust” is for Con Men: The reaction to the border chaos in Texas has accomplished one thing: It has exploded the lie at the heart of current “comprehensive” immigration reform plans. The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security. With Bill on the skids and his wife’s future prospects on the line, it was necessary for the pubic to see the president being punished, said Weekly Standard online editor Daniel Halper in his new book, “Clinton, Inc.: The Audacious Rebuilding of a Political Machine.” “They understood that
