KUALA LUMPUR—A family member of the captain of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 said the family is frustrated with the suspicion surrounding the pilot´s motives and character. Capt. Zaharie Ahmad Shah, with over 18,000 hours of flying time, commanded Flight 370 from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8 when it disappeared with 239 passengers and crew aboard. Fariq Abdul Hamid was the second officer. Investigators looking into the plane´s disappearance have focused on the pilot, co-pilot and crew members but haven´t ruled out the possibility that one or more passengers were involved, people familiar with the investigation said Friday. Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling tells his girlfriend, V. Stiviano, that he doesn´t want her posting pictures of minorities or bringing African-Americans to his games, according to explosive audio obtained by TMZ Sports. This includes NBA legend Magic Johnson, whom Stiviano was seen with in a photo on Instagram, which infuriated Sterling. Magic told TMZ Sports, "It´s a shame that Donald Sterling feels that way about African-Americans." During the alleged argument with Stiviano, who herself is black and Mexican, he asked, "Why are you taking pictures with minorities? Why?" Stiviano: "People call you and tell you that I have black

Facing up to 15 years in prison and stripped of his U.S. passport, Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s former city comptroller ordered his wife this week “to get him a fake birth certificate from Pakistan for a passport,” according to court records obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times. Now, Amer Ahmad is on the lam, and a judge issued a warrant Friday for his arrest. “I am very concerned that he will kidnap our children and take them to Pakistan,” Ahmad’s wife, Samar Ahmad, wrote Thursday in seeking an emergency order of protection against her husband. “He believes that [he] is not guilty and deserves a life with the children and repeatedly gets

Customized ´70s Van Fans Keep on

The 1970s may be long gone, but for a group of freewheeling fans, the spirit lives on in boxy glory. Sometimes with flamingos emblazoned on the side. Custom vans—the Grand Funk-blasting, mobile rumpus rooms of yesteryear—have held on to some dedicated enthusiasts. Even with grandchildren in tow or full-time jobs beckoning on Monday, the "vanners" are trying their mightiest to keep on trucking. Age has dampened a few things. "Pretty much, we don´t want to see these people naked anymore," said Joe Madonia, a 55-year-old who runs the Museum of Vanning & Hall of Fame at his Hudson, Fla., home.

Obama Subverts the Law

So now it’s the pardon power. To this point, in making a mockery of his core constitutional duty to execute the laws faithfully, the broad law-enforcement discretion the Constitution vests in the executive branch has been President Obama’s preferred sleight of hand. In reality, “prosecutorial discretion” is merely a resource-allocation doctrine peculiar to criminal law: a recognition of the obvious fact that enforcement resources are finite; that it is neither possible nor desirable that every penal infraction be prosecuted; and therefore that priorities must be established about which cases should be pursued, which left to state law-enforcement to handle, and which

During an appearance at Simmons College here in Boston on Wednesday, Hillary Clinton called Benghazi her "biggest regret" during her tenure as Secretary of State. To which I can only respond, "What difference at this point does it make?" Obviously this a ploy to put distance between herself and her actions or lack thereof during Benghazi and, by extension, to distance herself from the Obama Administration in her lifelong pursuit for the White House. Whatever she says now about Benghazi does not change the fact that four Americans died needlessly under her watch and that the Obama Administration made a

Every successful politician understands that you never start a fight you can’t win, and it’s an adage that Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York has taken to heart. Rick Perry, the governor of Texas, flew to New York City the other day to round up entrepreneurs to take a few of them back home to the business-friendly Lone Star State. Before he left, Mr. Perry dared Mr. Cuomo to stand up for his state’s economic policies in a one-on-one debate. Knowing a losing fight when he sees one, Mr. Cuomo scurried off, ducking the issue. He understands that Texas is heaven

As new U.S. sanctions against Russia loom, the Kremlin has shut down—at least for now—intensive high level communications between top U.S. and Russian officials. Since the invasion of Crimea, President Vladimir Putin and President Barack Obama have had regular phone calls in an often half-hearted attempt to deescalate the ongoing crisis inside Ukraine. But as the U.S. and EU prepare to unveil new sanctions against Russia, Putin has decided the interactions should stop. The Kremlin has ended high-level contact with the Obama administration, according to diplomatic officials and sources close to the Russian leadership. The move signals an end to the

President Obama returns from Asia Tuesday, but it’s already clear the signature trade initiative of his administration — the Trans-Pacific Partnership — is in tatters. And New York will be among the biggest losers. The basics of any trade deal come down to this: to make it easier for people in one country to buy or sell their goods and services to people in another country, and vice versa. Which is also why trade is among the best ways to advance general prosperity and global good will. The Trans-Pacific Partnership involves the United States and 11 other countries (Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile,

It’s a bit cheeky to compare neo-libertarian Senator Rand Paul to the late leftist songwriting icon Pete Seeger, but they share a naive sense of the possibilities of politics that is too obvious to ignore. That’s especially true now that Paul has elevated himself into a serious presidential contender seeking to shift the conservative movement away from its roots in multiple non-socialist traditions into something more monolithic and millenarian in its outlook and its aims. This morning’s New York Times profile of Sen. Paul’s fundraising efforts serves as a fresh reminder of that. Paul’s basic message is that the American Right

Rank-ordering the lies of President Obama is a daunting task. In advance of President Obama’s four-nation Asian tour this week, the Washington Post published an article saying this: President Obama’s bid to focus U.S. attention on Asia has failed to meet the lofty expectations he set three years ago in a grand pronouncement that the new emphasis would become a pillar of his foreign policy. [Snip] By now, nearly five and a half years into the Obama presidency, objective people can draw reasonable conclusions, among which are these: Barack Obama was among the least prepared men to ever serve as presidency. Forget the current polling as between Hillary and Elizabeth Warren. It pits Hillary against someone who “isn’t running.” For all my criticisms of Warren, and they are extensive, I am convinced that if she ran, she would crush Hillary, just as Obama did. Warren, as did Obama, has a unique ability to demagogue the core Democratic narrative of victimhood in ways that would make Hillary blush. She is more cunning than Hillary, more popular with the base, would bring an excitement the contrived Ready-for-Hillary movement could only dream of. Democrats may be “ready” for Hillary, but they don’t really want

Anyone expecting rancher Cliven Bundy to apologize at a news briefing Thursday for widely condemned remarks — that black people were “happier” during the slavery era than now — would be disappointed. Wearing his signature cowboy hat, Bundy, who led an armed confrontation with federal rangers over a land dispute and was then hailed as a patriot by Fox News’ Sean Hannity and other conservatives, repeated in Bunkerville, Nevada, what he had said earlier — he was “just wondering” if blacks were better off under slavery. President Obama’s landslide victory in 2008 was supposed to herald the beginning of a new Democratic era. And yet, six years later, there is not even a clear Democratic majority in the country, let alone one poised for 30 years of dominance. It’s not because Mr. Obama’s so-called new coalition of young and nonwhite voters failed to live up to its potential. They again turned out in record numbers in 2012. The Democratic majority has failed to materialize because the Republicans made large, countervailing and unappreciated gains of their own among white Southerners. From the high plains of West Texas to the

In late 2011, nearing the eve of the formal start of the 2012 presidential election cycle, America’s liberal commentators had already watched a series of Republican presidential debates and formed their opinions of the prospective GOP candidates. Most determined that former Massachusetts governor and eventual nominee, Mitt Romney, was an unsavory conservative, but he was a preferable alternative to his Republican competition. In fact, the left-leaning political press was so much more concerned about Romney’s arch-conservative competitors that they were willing to overlook the former governor’s offenses to liberal

Secretary of State John Kerry delivered a stern warning to Russia Thursday evening, one week after a tentative agreement to defuse the crisis in Ukraine appeared to have no impact on the violent clashes between pro-Russian separatists and the Ukrainian government. "The window to change course is closing," Kerry told reporters at the State Department. "President [Vladimir] Putin and Russia face a choice." If Russia does not reverse course and take action to urge the separatists to stand down and give up their arms, Kerry said the U.S. and its allies are poised to take actions directed at hurting Russia´s economy.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has been unable to get Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on the phone amid escalating tension near the country’s shared border with Ukraine. Mr. Shoigu announced Thursday that Russia planned to engage in a new series of military exercises near the Ukraine border. The military move, he said, is in response to ongoing NATO training exercises in Poland and the death of at least two pro-Russia insurgents in eastern Ukraine. Army Col. Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman, told reporters Friday that Mr. Hagel has been trying to communicate with Russian officials but has yet to hear back
