A frightening map of
where Kerr-McGee polluted

Washington Post, by Juliet Eilperin

Original Article

On Thursday, the Justice Department announced the biggest environmental settlement in history with Anadarko Petroleum, reaching a $5.15 billion deal to clean up dozens of sites across the United States and compensate more than 7,000 people living with the effects of the contamination. The accord arose out of a lawsuit in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court concerning Tronox, a paint materials manufacturer and unit of the company Kerr-McGee, an Anadarko subsidiary. Anadarko bought Kerr-McGee after it had spun off Tronox, but plaintiffs and Justice Dept. officials charged this was merely an attempt to avoid taking financial

Comments:
The problem with lawsuits like this is they don´t usually have a "fixed" payout to lawyers who win & therefore, much of the winnings go to them first. We have seen before when this type of money becomes available for "cleanup," it disappears down some political or union rathole. It is stupid to award without a complete breakout of how money will be doled out and then follow the progress of the action (cleanup). This reminds me of tobacco settlement.

Wow - that is a lot of pollution. Maybe we need a giant government agency with the power to shut down companies that pollute and enforce strict laws on pollution…

but of course we have had such an agency for over 40 years. How many problems have they solved?

Thanks to treatment methods like creosote and CCA (Cyano-Cupric-Arsenide) or "Treated Lumber", American forests have more trees now than when the Pilgrims landed. Before ´treatment´ everything wooden had to be constantly re-built, depleting the forests.

You please the greens over here....they get you over there.

Next thing you know...they´ll try to close down all the coal mines.

Oh....wait..

Frightening map? Most of the sites are service stations. So what. State agencies have been cleaning up thousands of service stations (mostly due to leaking underground storage tanks) for the last 25 years and most or all are cleaned-up or to the point where they are not a threat to the local drinking water.

Getting rid of Tronox would in no way rid Anadarko of environmental liability and I´m sure that Anadarko knew that. Anybody in the environmental field or with business savvy knows environmental liability is joint and several and that you can´t sign it away. In almost all cases, if you bought a polluted property then your on the hook unless you can document with the environmental agency you were not the cause or contributor to the pollution. Therefore, I believe that Juliet is trying to paint "big oil companies" as evil by trying to sell their environmental liability.

The article refers to a site that begun production in 1910. Anyone know what the environmental laws were back then? Anyone know if there were tests for the processes involved? Just that one reference to a contaminated site which is part of the "frightening map" is enough to stop me reading further.

If the EPA is so worried about creosote, why aren´t they suing all rail lines for creosote ties? Oh that´s right. The big libtard from Berkshire/Hallaway owns them.

Biomass should be the EPA´s concern. My wood supplier told me last fall that he didn´t know how long he could stay in business because Fort Drum was paying high prices for their wood burning biomass facility. Last fall, oversized tractor trailers of chips went by my house 5 times a day. These libtards obviously want trees destroyed everywhere they can find them.

With the outcome of Afghanistan´s controversial presidential election still in doubt, and uncertainty over Afghan forces´ ability to stand against the Taliban after most US forces withdraw, it´s hard to say with certainty what the US-led war there has accomplished, or failed to accomplish. But one thing is clear, as shown by latest quarterly report from the US Special Inspector General on Afghanistan Reconstruction: The $7 billion US program to eradicate poppy cultivation there over the past decade has been a flop. The country is today the world´s largest supplier of opium, the purified latex sap from the Papaver somniferum poppy species

VA fix could cost billions

The VA’s data on patient wait times is so bad that Congress’s official scorekeeper can’t even calculate the costs for fixing the agency, and that has become a major hurdle as lawmakers push for a quick fix on Capitol Hill. The House and Senate each have passed bills to try to get a handle on the wait times and other problems afflicting care at VA clinics, but when negotiators from each chamber met last month to try to hammer out a compromise, they ran into problems over the cost. Sen. Richard Burr, North Carolina Republican, said they couldn’t even begin to debate what’s in the bill because the cost estimate produced by the

The Pentagon came as close as it has to date on Thursday to identifying a red line that would need to be crossed for the Obama administration to justify an aggressive U.S. military attack on the al Qaeda-inspired extremists who have declared a new Islamic state spanning the border between Syria and Iraq. The Defense Department’s top uniformed official said the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which has seized vast territory over the past month, would have to become a serious threat to the U.S. homeland before the administration alters its existing strategy of collecting intelligence and advising the Iraqi military.

Cairo - Two people were killed in clashes, and a bomb blast in a train wounded nine, security officials said, as police quashed protests marking the anniversary Thursday of Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi´s ouster. The violence came as the pro-Morsi Muslim Brotherhood-led Anti-Coup Alliance issued an aggressive rallying cry demanding a "day of anger" to mark the occasion. Nine people were wounded when a bomb hidden in a briefcase near a passenger seat exploded inside a train compartment in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria late Thursday, security officials and state media said.

An education advocacy group on Thursday threw down the first challenge to New York’s teacher tenure laws in the wake of a landmark court decision in California last month finding such laws there unconstitutional. A lawsuit filed in State Supreme Court on Staten Island argues that the tenure laws violate the State Constitution’s guarantee of a “sound basic education” by making it difficult to fire bad teachers and by protecting the most veteran teachers in the event of layoffs, regardless of their quality. The suit, filed against city and state education officials, names as plaintiffs 11 public school students whose parents belong to a
