United Steelworkers: Players from
Other Colleges Interested in Unionizing

Associated Press, by Tim Dahlberg

Players from other universities have expressed interest in forming unions in the wake of the landmark decision last week involving the Northwestern football team, a union organizer said Friday. Tim Waters of the United Steelworkers would not disclose the players or their schools, saying it was too early to reveal who they are. But he said they reached out following the decision last week by a regional director of the National Labor Relations Board declaring Northwestern´s football players have the right to form a union. "We´re not giving out who it is or who they are, but the answer is

You can bet that the liberal Democrats will start using this unionization effort of NCAA athletes as a political issue before long.

The Left´s assault on American traditions continues. Since pro sports moved from game status to being a business for the players....it done nothing but go downhill. If this latest abomination goes through, college sports will have far more losers than gainers. What a shame. The union assault on all things American rolls along. Why don´t the athletes just try to go pro? The degrees conferred on 95% of them are a worthless joke anyway....

The shop steward will have to attend every huddle to make sure some running back isn´t being given the wide receiver´s assignment, or vice versa. Otherwise, he/she/it would have to call for a work stoppage, or a general strike.

Just wait for the union-madated "slow downs", strikes/walkouts on the eve of bowl games, etc. The colleges will cave because of the threat of revenue losses.

Also, who doesn´t see the inevitable union-inspired points shaving, catering to the demands of organized crime (union bosses)? Too much money to be had.

This will end as all union affiliated enterprises do: complete destruction of an activity/industry that was just too prosperous to be ignored by the unions

Don´t more than half the ´´employees´´ have to vote for a union? How many on a team are scholarships?

I see few, if any scholarships for sports in the future, if this happened. Even if the scholarship players were allowed to unionize among themselves, there would be few enough so that a strike would be ineffective at stopping games.

I expect the full NLRB to reverse this ruling.

But suppose not. Won´t all those receiving scholarships be employees?

Why should a scholarship for athletics be different from one for engineering or science or music or business?

And if the student is an employee then the scholarship funder is an employer. Funders won´t like that.

Immigration: During his re-election campaign, President Obama said emphatically that the southwestern border was secure. Now he wants billions to cope with the flood of illegals crossing that very border. According to various news accounts, the number of illegals coming across the border has surged to 35,000 month. In just the past few months, more than 50,000 unaccompanied children crossed over, creating a huge humanitarian crisis. How can this possibly be happening? After all, didn´t Obama tell us when he ran for re-election that the border with Mexico was secure? As a matter of fact, he did. Many times. In a

President Obama evidently has decided not to put a human face on the crisis unfolding at the U.S. southern border—not even his own. The White House said over and over again Monday that Obama will not travel to the border with Mexico despite flying to Texas this week to raise money for Democratic candidates there. It´s certainly in part a political decision, one meant to avoid taking ownership of a difficult issue on which the White House would prefer to share blame.
