The Unemployment Puzzle:
Where Have All the Workers Gone?

Wall Street Journal, by Glenn Hubbard

Original Article

Posted By:StormCnter, 4/5/2014 5:35:42 AM

A big puzzle looms over the U.S. economy: Friday´s jobs report tells us that the unemployment rate has fallen to 6.7% from a peak of 10% at the height of the Great Recession. But at the same time, only 63.2% of Americans 16 or older are participating in the labor force, which, while up a bit in March, is down substantially since 2000. As recently as the late 1990s, the U.S. was a nation in which employment, job creation and labor force participation went hand in hand. That is no longer the case. What´s going on? Think of the labor market

There are fewer workers because there are fewer jobs.
You didn´t think exporting jobs to China would create more jobs, did you?

Fewer independent, self-reliant Americans with jobs = more votes for Democrats. It´s very, very simple really.

"What we don´t know is whether the Obama´s administration´s activist policies failed to draw more Americans back to work because they were poorly executed or because they didn´t do enough to raise aggregate demand."

Yes and yes. The Obama administration has bungled every major undertaking since 2008, easy answer there. The government can not "create" demand. Only the interaction of business and the private sector can, both factions of which the government has done its best to overregulate and slow down. We should be in much worse shape than we are now except for the resilience of the American people who work for a living.

Like #6, I was amazed at that pull quote " What we don´t know is whether the Obama´s administration´s activist policies failed to draw more Americans back to work because they were poorly executed or because they didn´t do enough to raise aggregate demand. "

It is very dismaying that a once great economic news source would even find this to be a mystery.

And this administration and big business want to import MORE lower paying employees from over the border to replace those that currently do have jobs !!!

Besides, did you really expect that this Administration is going to ACTUALLY tell you what the correct unemployment rate is ?? Or give you a figure that THEY can say is great !!!

I count myself has having Gone Galt. I took an early retirement offer which slashed my standard of living to what I can just manage with the lifetime savings ravaged as they were by the 2008 market manipulations. I am healthy and could easily have continued to use my mind another ten or even twenty years for earning money in high-tech. But that money would in turn be stolen at a greater and greater rate as taxes.

Therefore, my mind is no longer on the market, as Ayn famously said. I´m working the dregs of the railroad with Galt, walking the tracks with Owen Kellogg, and most importantly, composing my music in a quiet valley, like Richard Halley.

well let us consider:
- try to find a real job when you are on the "wrong" side of, say, 47
- talk to any recruiter about the hiring managers who call with a request for candidates, but they must be "diversity candidates". Meaning, as the joke is, "Left-handed Lebanese lesbians with an MBA, a PhD, and have 15 years´ experience but must not be over 32 years of age, and willing to work 72 hours per week for $39,000 and no benefits". Not really a joke.
- as previously noted, so many positions are for roles no longer or rarely done in the USA. Call centers in Mumbai, manufacturing in Honduras, China, Nepal, or Mexico. Design in Korea.
-- utterly incompetent HR policies, in HR departments largely staffed by dolts, feminazi types, ´affirmative action" hires, and sexual perverts.
-- the difficulty of operating ANY business.
-- the recognition that early retirement, collecting Disability, and the like can pay nearly as much as working under awful conditions -- if one can find ANYTHING -- without the commute or paying confiscatory taxes and road tolls.
-- and, after all, Nancy Piglousy told us that now we are free to be dancers and poets without "job lock".

a few years ago, in this salon, someone posted a personal account. As he put it then, "two years ago I had a house, a boat, a thriving business that I operated with my wife. Now I have lost all that. I work a part time job and live in a rooming house. My wife lives with her aging parents".
I have seen many such, and am not far from it myself.
This will not turn out well.

I will give you an example.

Through his personal smarts and work ethic, my young son now has his own thriving business. I do the books and all the purchasing, on the side, evenings, weekends and an hour or two here and there during the day while I do my own job.

He is at the point where he could easily afford one if not two employees. Instead, he does all the shipping himself between phone calls, does late nights, always works some on the weekends.

Why? Simple. Why on earth would we want to hire people? The government telling me what i have to pay, threat of lawsuits, rampant drug use, theft, and not to mention all the compliance are regulatory rules that must be observed. My sister has her own business with 30 employees, and you should see what she has to deal with, especially if they do some work in-state, some out. All of which takes her away from selling and marketing her business.

We leverage technology, work long hours, use temps if we get into a bind, which is rare.

Again, most of this I lay at the feet of the government. There are a lot of people like us who have leveraged alternatives. And this will continue on.

IRS lawyers ought to enjoy themselves this holiday weekend because, as the Washington Examiner´s Mark Tapscott reports, "they´ll be busier than normal next week." IRS counsel will make two separate appearances next week in court to explain and defend the agency´s handling of Lois Lerner´s now-missing emails. The Obama administration has managed to keep the IRS story just below full-blown-scandal level for months now. The sickening news started filling my inbox during a family dinner. The three boys had become three bodies. “Not for publication yet,” my first source warned; I chose not to announce the news because I still wasn’t ready to bury my hopes for those kids. Half an hour later, my teenage son glanced at his ever-pinging cellphone and shared the bad news. My slightly prolonged denial didn’t ease the pain. I still had that constricted feeling in the chest so many of us have felt for 18 days, the recurring pit in the stomach that members of the three families

Every Fourth of July, some Americans sit down to read the Declaration of Independence, reacquainting themselves with the nation’s founding charter exactly as it was signed by the Second Continental Congress in 1776. Or almost exactly? A scholar is now saying that the official transcript of the document produced by the National Archives and Records Administration contains a significant error — smack in the middle of the sentence beginning “We hold these truths to be self-evident,” no less. The error, according to Danielle Allen, a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., concerns a period that appears right after

It looks like we have officially entered the world of the post-Obama presidency. President Obama’s recent speeches and remarks make it obvious that he is not making any serious effort to govern or to drive world events. Except for covering the basics, he seems to have taken something like an early retirement. We can look back at his West Point speech, which may go down in history as his first post-presidency speech, and the endpoint of an Obama foreign policy. During that speech, the president’s reflections on his foreign policy consisted of making excuses and trying to explain himself instead

Does this guy even understand how representative government works? Here’s how it works: the representatives govern. In other words, Congress makes the laws. But Obama seems to think that when push comes to shove, the president is the only representative the people need. Thus, he declared that “America cannot wait” for Congress, as if he speaks for America, rather than the people actually elected by the people to represent them in something called—you guessed it—the House

The question I am asked more than any other these days is: How on earth are we going to make it to 2017? It’s black humor, really, ironic hyperbole; no one really believes the United States will suffer an existential catastrophe between now and the day Barack Obama leaves office. Certainly we’ve seen nothing to compare with the cascading horrors of 1979, for example—a year that began with gas rationing, proceeded to a nuclear-plant meltdown, saw 52 American diplomats taken hostage in Iran, and ended with the Soviets invading Afghanistan. The people I’ve talked to lived through 1979; they know this.

In Washington, most respectable opinion lined up, yet again, to condemn Republicans for not passing an amnesty under the guise of defunct-for-now “comprehensive immigration reform.” Meanwhile, the crisis on the Southern border continued. A massive influx of people — largely driven by Central Americans, many of them children — drawn here in the expectation of lax immigration enforcement is overwhelming border officials and facilities.
