Iran’s Reformers Include More
Than One Former Hostage-Taker

Washington Post, by Robert Mackey

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 4/4/2014 4:26:34 PM

As my colleagues Somini Sengupta and Thomas Erdbrink reported, there has been discomfort and anger in Washington since Iran applied for a visa to let a veteran diplomat who played a part in the 1979 hostage crisis move to New York and serve as its ambassador to the United Nations. What the outraged reaction from Washington obscures, however, is that several of the former hostage-takers — including the man who devised the plan to seize the United States Embassy in Tehran and the woman who explained the group’s demands to foreign reporters — later became leading members of the movement for reform in Iran.

Comments:
I wouldn´t trust any negotiations that 0bama is having with the Iranians and believe any of their actions are to the determent of US and Israel. Down in the article, my US Senator Ted Cruz calls Mr. Aboutalebi “an acknowledged terrorist” and that´s good enough for me. If he wants in, he can sneak across our porous southern border like everyone else. s/o.

When 10-year-old Charlotte Bell was invited to the White House’s annual “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day,” she made sure not to let an opportunity to help her dad pass her by. During a question-and-answer session with Michelle Obama, Charlotte wasn’t interested in asking about the first lady’s favorite book or favorite sport — she was there to get her daddy a job. “My dad’s been out of a job for three years and I wanted to give you his resume,” said Charlotte, handing Mrs. Obama a copy. “Oh my goodness,” the first lady said, hugging the little girl, and then turning back to the audience. “Well, it’s a little private,

The Obama administration is poised to take over Oregon’s broken insurance exchange, according to officials familiar with the decision, who say that it reflects federal officials’ conclusion that several state-run marketplaces may be too dysfunctional to fix. In public, the board overseeing Cover Oregon is scheduled to vote Friday whether to join the federal insurance marketplace that already sells health plans in most of the country under the Affordable Care Act. Behind the scenes, the officials say, federal and Oregon officials already have privately agreed that closing down the system is the best path to rescue the state

Former President Jimmy Carter said Tuesday that the United States shouldn’t impose harmful sanctions on Russia, as he believes Russian President Vladimir Putin “is not going to use military force” in eastern Ukraine. “So far, we have limited the sanctions to the leadership of Russia, and I think that is the proper approach,” he told the Agence France-Presse while in Paris for a discussion on climate change. “I don’t think we would go so far as to impose sanctions that would hurt the Russian people.” Mr. Carter argued that Russia’s takeover of Crimea was “inevitable” and that the West couldn’t have done anything “to prevent that

Israel has suspended its peace talks with the Palestinians in response to a unity deal between Hamas and Fatah. The decision came after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu chaired a six-hour meeting of Israel´s security cabinet. The Palestinian factions announced the reconciliation deal on Wednesday, saying they would attempt to form a unity government in the coming weeks. Mr Netanyahu told the BBC the Palestinian leader must abandon the deal if he wanted peace with Israel. However, more prominent Republican leaders who have made public and laudatory statements about Bundy have begun to backtrack. Expect the rest — if they want to keep their

Slavyansk, Ukraine - Ukraine´s military launched assaults to retake rebel-held eastern towns on Thursday in which up to five people were reported killed, a move Russian President Vladimir Putin warned would have "consequences". The offensive sent international tensions soaring and oil prices up, raising the prospect of Russia making good on its threat of a massive response in the ex-Soviet republic. First lady Michelle Obama took her campaign to help veterans find jobs to Fort Campbell, Ky.., Wednesday where she said that most Americans don´t know much about the military. Following comments from Jill Biden, the vice president´s wife and Obama´s teammate in helping veterans, she noted that unlike Biden, she had little familiarity with the military prior to campaigning for the White House in 2008. “Unlike Jill, I wasn´t a military mom. I wasn´t a Blue Star family member. I didn´t know much about the military, and I was probably more like the average American,” said Obama.

In advance of President Obama’s four-nation Asian tour this week, the Washington Post published an article saying this: President Obama’s bid to focus U.S. attention on Asia has failed to meet the lofty expectations he set three years ago in a grand pronouncement that the new emphasis would become a pillar of his foreign policy. [Snip] By now, nearly five and a half years into the Obama presidency, objective people can draw reasonable conclusions, among which are these: Barack Obama was among the least prepared men to ever serve as presidency. Anyone expecting rancher Cliven Bundy to apologize at a news briefing Thursday for widely condemned remarks — that black people were “happier” during the slavery era than now — would be disappointed. Wearing his signature cowboy hat, Bundy, who led an armed confrontation with federal rangers over a land dispute and was then hailed as a patriot by Fox News’ Sean Hannity and other conservatives, repeated in Bunkerville, Nevada, what he had said earlier — he was “just wondering” if blacks were better off under slavery. At least 40 U.S. veterans died waiting for appointments at the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care system, many of whom were placed on a secret waiting list. The secret list was part of an elaborate scheme designed by Veterans Affairs managers in Phoenix who were trying to hide that 1,400 to 1,600 sick veterans were forced to wait months to see a doctor, according to a recently retired top VA doctor and several high-level sources. For six months, CNN has been reporting on extended delays in health care appointments suffered by veterans across the country and who died while waiting for appointments and care.

President Obama’s landslide victory in 2008 was supposed to herald the beginning of a new Democratic era. And yet, six years later, there is not even a clear Democratic majority in the country, let alone one poised for 30 years of dominance. It’s not because Mr. Obama’s so-called new coalition of young and nonwhite voters failed to live up to its potential. They again turned out in record numbers in 2012. The Democratic majority has failed to materialize because the Republicans made large, countervailing and unappreciated gains of their own among white Southerners. Secretary of State John Kerry delivered a stern warning to Russia Thursday evening, one week after a tentative agreement to defuse the crisis in Ukraine appeared to have no impact on the violent clashes between pro-Russian separatists and the Ukrainian government. "The window to change course is closing," Kerry told reporters at the State Department. "President [Vladimir] Putin and Russia face a choice." If Russia does not reverse course and take action to urge the separatists to stand down and give up their arms, Kerry said the U.S. and its allies are poised to take actions directed at hurting Russia´s economy.
