The Dodge Dart Still Isn´t Selling.
Should Chrysler Can Cars Altogether?

There´s no two ways about it: the Dodge Dart isn´t selling. Just a year after its debut -- a debut heralded loudly throughout the automotive world -- the Dart´s sales were pretty dismal. Many of you vented about the compact model, complaining about things as varied as its so-so looks to its iffy ancestor. (Snip) Trucks and SUVs were a different story. On that front, sales were up 30 percent for the year, and March rang in a whopping 34 percent above March 2013, thanks in part to strong performances by the Ram pickup, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the

Comments:
Ironically Democrats bailed out an auto company that is making lots of fossil-fuel loving trucks, but cannot sell much else.

The writer does not take into account that 1st quarter of ´13 had mild weather, but 1st quarter of ´14 was one of the worst winters in recent history. Nobody around here (Michigan) was into car shopping in zero degree weather. I don´t think trying to make this comparison is valid.

According to the article, trucks and SUV sales were up, so weather doesn´t seem to be an issue.

Are some buyers still having nightmares about Fiats they owned decades ago?

What´s so "iffy" about the original Dart? IMO a solid smaller car for its day, and is now popular for restoration and modernization, particularly the Demon variant. It´s popular at the track, and a guy in the neighborhood has one souped up to 900 hp!

Automotive authors really need to research car history more or talk to a knowledgeable car buff.

#2, people are more likely to buy a truck or SUV in bad weather than they are to buy a car. This is a two-fold effect. One, people who are interested in buying a truck or SUV are less likely to be discouraged by bad weather. AND people who need a new vehicle are more likely to decide to buy a truck or SUV if the weather is bad.

It´s telling that the Big 3 have been on a nostalgia trip for the past few years, trying to capture the 50-60 year old male market with old model names and exteriors. The products simply cannot stand on their own. The Big 3 ´style´ their cars. The Euros and Japanese engineer their cars. The reason? Unions? Management culture? Most American buyers know a turkey when they see one/drive one.

Comparing auto sales in March year-to-year seems like a waste of time. One month tells nothing and choosing a month with variable weather makes it worse. If the Dart is a good car compared to others of its kind, it will sell. It´s really that simple. Reviews on the internet are quite varied but show a trend toward poor quality. I´ve now spent more time on my reply than the writer probably spent on the Yahoo! article.

The Dart is a pretty nice effort, but doesn´t stand out from the excellent Ford Focus, Mazda 3, Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.

Chrysler´s truck-oriented efforts are much, much better. The Ram, Grand Cherokee, Wrangler and the new Cherokee are strong, and do stand out from their competitors. Sales figures bear this out.

You want to do it right, take the Dart back to a straight 6, rear wheel drive, with a push-button automatic transmission. A ´64 Dart was my first ´driving´ car, and still is one of my top three favorite cars I´ve ever owned (well, my parents actually owned that one, but they let it be mine to drive - how much trouble can you get into in a car that could only hit 80 mph if it fell off a cliff?)

I don´t know....I have ridden in many, many higher mileage Hondas and they are rattletraps with cardboard feeling seats and shot interiors. Toyota just had to pay a huge settlement for quality issues. My son´s BMW is on its second recall.

As much as the "imports are better" goofballs would like to think otherwise, car quality, with a few exceptions, is pretty even around the board.

To say that Chrysler cars or GM cars are junk is pretty uninformed.

Off topic but a cute story.. In 1967 my dad bought a brand new candy apple red Dodge Dart. He had it a week, when showing it off to some co-workers he was stopped and got a ticket for speeding. A week later, same thing, stopped for speeding. He told the police officer he had only one ticket in 30 years, he neglected to tell the officer it was in the past week. The cop let him off with a warning.
About five years later, my folks had the car in a garage for some repair work and the garage burned down with the car inside.

Harare, Zimbabwe — President Robert Mugabe’s statement early this month that whites will no longer be allowed to own land in Zimbabwe, and that any white farmers still left will be kicked out, raised eyebrows at home and abroad. Now those comments by the long-ruling autocrat are bringing a backlash in Zimbabwe’s beleaguered trade and tourism ministries. Michelle Obama is a popular first lady. On average, her favorable ratings have been higher than those of her predecessors, Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton. This may well reflect the fact that more so than other first ladies, Mrs. Obama has a stand-alone personal image. Unlike other recent first ladies, her popularity has not fallen or risen with her husband’s. How popular is Michelle? A steady two-thirds of the public has held a favorable view of Mrs. Obama, according to nationwide Gallup poll and Pew Research Center surveys, for most of her time as first lady. BILLINGS, Mont. – Coal industry representatives say lawsuits against mines in three Western states could have consequences across the U.S. as environmentalists seek changes in how mining is approved on federally owned reserves. In civil cases unfolding in Colorado, New Mexico and Montana, the group WildEarth Guardians asserts coal companies benefited from lax oversight by federal regulators. The group says the U.S. Department of Interior approved mining plans without enough public involvement, and gave little heed to the pollution caused by digging, shipping and burning coal. The group asked the courts to stop mining until the plans are re-done. The

Glenn Beck has set up Mercury One Children and Family Border Relief Fund to help illegals coming into the United States. He’s already raised $600,000. Beck stated that Obama would not have to step in and ask for $3.7 billion if private charities would pick up the slack and give to the swarm of illegals crossing the border. Is he kidding? Do we really need more churches and non-profits enabling this blatant attack on America? Rich people and liberal elite billionaires have no skin in the game when it comes to the consequences of illegal immigration so what do they care? It’s the working class and middle class who will take the hit.

On Friday’s broadcast of PBS’s “NewsHour” New York Times columnist David Brooks and Creators Syndicate columnist Mark Shields took on the House Speaker John Boehner’s lawsuit against the Obama administration, which alleges oversteps in executive authority by the Obama White House. Both acknowledged Boehner’s gripe with the Obama administration had merit, but were skeptical of the lawsuit’s chances. However, they both also took on the alternative offered by former Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK), which was to impeach President Barack Obama. Both dismissed that course of action as well, with Brooks calling it “cloud cuckoo land.” Partial transcript as follows: WOODRUFF: So the Highway Trust
