Will Republican Culture Warriors Snatch
Defeat From The Jaws Of Victory?

Forbes, by Bill Frezza

Original Article

Posted By:MissMolly, 4/4/2014 7:51:01 AM

I was recently invited to speak at the annual Conservative Leadership Conference in Raleigh, North Carolina, a regional red-meat gathering of the conservative faithful trying to help Republicans win back control of the government. Since I’m neither a conservative nor a Republican—nor faithful, for that matter, as I am a rather unabashed atheist—you might wonder what I was doing there. I’ll give you the same answer I gave the conference attendees. To have any hope of becoming a majority party, you ought to take a page from libertarians trying to make common cause with Republicans by focusing on economic freedom

Comments:
It worries me when I see long-time L-Dotters saying "Vote for the Democrat". You know who you are, and I simply don´t get the logic, if there is any.

Limited Government.

Also a ´minimally intrusive government´ must be our rallying call.

A lot of ´persuadable voters´ can smell the socialism and they don´t like it.

Religious and social issues are important but they are electoral poison.

Win first then preach if you must.

So an atheist goes to a conservative gathering-- and doesn´t take with him his hatred for things rooted in a morality of Judeo-Christian ethics?

I belive conservatives should frame every argument based on truth and common sense-- and of course economic sense-- and they wouldn´t have to even whisper God.

the real problem is being perceived as self-righteous instead of simply right!

au contraire
you win, ultimately, by persuasion, not by pandering. The real decisions are made in the hearts and minds and around the kitchen table. The tallies at ballot box reflect those decisions, not the reverse.
Culture counts. Words matter. Character is important. So is language. So are borders.
Yes, intrusive government is bad. So are lousy fiscal and tax policies. But a nation with great fiscal policies and a high and increasing rate of single-parent houses subsisting on WIC, EBT cards, Section 8 housing, and various other forms of public assistance, and an attitude of entitlement, will not be a successful nation. See Rome, et al. Subsidizing bad character guarantees more of it. Pretending bad behavior is OK is to give approval to a lie.
I have lived in a city that had sexually active 9-year-olds! 30 year old grandmothers. Do you truly believe that turning a blind eye to this sort of cultural rot will cure it?

I have been here a long time. I think I know who most of the long time posters are by now.

There are leftists among us helping to drive a wedge into the party. Despite their best efforts, they are easy to spot.

There are those who would have us vote for GOP politicians that vote with the Democrats on the biggest issues such as spending, taxes, entitlements, immigration, Obamacare repeal, and so on to avoid being called names.

There are those who are so angry that almost every incumbent is a ´RINO´ (a label I will not use).

But I do not recall any of them ever saying ´vote for the Democrat´.

We are having a very important and healthy debate. It is good for the party, and it is good for the country, for in the end we all will have thought seriously about where the country is, where it needs to go, and how we are all going to get it there.

Some may not vote for a particular candidate because they cannot support one or more of their political positions, social or economic, or both. That is OK, but they do need to take that route with caution.

However, that is not the equivalent of ´voting for a Democrat´. It is intellectually dishonest to say so, and some posters here need to stop trotting out that argument if they want to be taken seriously in this forum.

We have a significant battle for the future of this country coming over the next several elections. As we have already seen, the leftists and statists will not lose gracefully. We need to steel ourselves for what is to come.

I once thought ´atheist´ meant someone who didn´t believe in God.

But based on various atheists´ writing, it apparently means ´someone who has a lot of mirrors hanging in his house and spends a lot of time admiring his own reflection.´

First, we have to win. And we won´t win by pushing the hot button issues in front. Our country is in peril, but it´s not being taken down by gay people or young women who choose abortion, it´s being taken down by Marxist Progressives. Work on the culture AFTER you get in! This is what Obama did. be the Trojan horse. Get in the gates. I´m a raving conservative, but we need to WIN IT to fix it!!!!!

If Republicans are now only conservative about fiscal and military policy, then you´ll be happy to know they´ll still get my vote. But my respect will be gone.

I have never seen anyone on this site to vote for Democrats against Republicans but I am not constantly monitoring. It could have happened but I would think it is rare. I have promoted writing in your choice of a better candidate when the Republican is not someone you support but never voting for a Democrat. That would only give power to the left. As far as write in candidates go, "somehow" Lisa Murkowsky won that way so I think it is a viable suggestion even though I suspect that Alaskan election was rigged.

What they don´t seem to realize is that ALL of the Republican grass roots folks are more Tea Party than Republican. How you feel about this issue may depend on where you live. Here in California, there is virtually no "base" to rally. Our only hope is to make it seem "OK" to vote Republican, and I think that would be done by re-branding the party as more Libertarian-leaning. If a supporter of liberty happens to be an irreligious metro-sexual, who cares? Let´s capture his vote, get the government off our backs, and let the culture sort the rest of this stuff out.

The tens of thousands of Central Americans who have crossed America’s porous borders over the last year came on the assumption that once on U.S. soil they would never have to return to their countries. The instigators of this influx correctly viewed Obama’s de facto support for amnesty as a flashing green light. After all, how seriously were they going to take U.S. immigration law under a president who treated border security as a punch line to a joke? In 2011, Obama loudly mocked conservatives, the very ones who foresaw today’s mushrooming crisis, as malcontents crying wolf about a vulnerable border. “You
