Coats: ‘I’m at the wrong hearing'
Washington Post, by Colby Itkowitz

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 4/3/2014 7:39:30 PM

Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.) was prepped for an appropriations hearing on the defense budget when he took his turn Wednesday afternoon, flipping papers on his lap, reading from them and commending the witness for his department’s prompt response to a letter Coats had sent about a military accounting office in his home state. It was all fairly innocuous except for one problem: Coats was in the completely wrong hearing complimenting the wrong witness. After he’d finished a lengthy opening to his question, a staffer slipped Coats a piece of paper. Coats read it to himself, looked up, and said, “I just got a note saying I’m at the wrong hearing.”

Comments:
One of ours. In his defense, it took him going through all the usual posturing to suddenly figure out that he was in the wrong place. What does that say about the way hearings are truly conducted, as if we didn´t already know the answer? The word is "scripted."

Completely agree with OP with "scripted" hearings. They all drone on and say nothing so they would all look alike. If that´s the worse thing he has done who cares. If he was a Democrat it wouldn´t have been mentioned. Mediaite has it on their site too. At least he doesn´t behave like that cowardly, vile, odious Harry Reid.

w/o more information I have to defend Coats. It is easy enough to walk into the wrong room.

But shouldn´t the Chair have noticed? You can´t just walk into a committee or sub-committee meeting and start talking.

You can bet the Coats, if he runs for re-election, will continuously see the videos of him being lost on Capitol Hill with liberal Democrat commentary about how dumb he is.

Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton

On Monday morning, at a White House summit on policies to help working families, Vice President Joe Biden reflected on his wealth. He said that while he wore a "mildly expensive suit" and was vice president of the United States of America, he didn´t own a stock or a bond, and as a senator, was the poorest member of the club. This bit is a longstanding part of Biden´s shtick, but was interpreted--most loudly by the Republican National Committee--as a dig at possible presidential rival Hillary Clinton. The former secretary of state has been having trouble talking about her considerable wealth, ever since she described herself as "dead broke"

Sen. Ted Cruz doubled down on his adherence to strict conservative principles, saying that the GOP’s way to the White House is not paved with compromises and concessions to the Democrats. “It is amazing that the wisdom of the chattering class to the Republicans is always, always, always, ‘surrender your principles and agree with the Democrats,” Mr. Cruz told the New Yorker. “That’s been true for my entire lifetime. The chattering classes have consistently said, ‘You crazy Republicans have to give up on what you believe and become more like Democrats.’ “And, I would note, every time Republicans do that,

A former Guantanamo detainee has been arrested in Spain for operating a terrorist cell that recruited fighters for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), Spanish police said. Lahcen Ikassrien, a 46-year-old Moroccan, and seven others were arrested in Madrid recently as part of a dozen raids in the Spanish capital, conservative watchdog Judicial Watch reported, based on Spanish news reports. Ikassrien, who spent four years at Guantanamo, reportedly recruited and sent jihadists to Iraq via Turkey to fight for ISIL, an offshoot of al Qaeda that seeks to establish an Islamic caliphate in the Middle East.

Cairo - Sudanese authorities re-arrested a Sudanese woman on Tuesday hours after she was freed from death row, and detained her and her family as they tried to board a plane in Khartoum, a security source and her lawyer said. Mariam Yahya Ibrahim, 27, sentenced to death last month for converting to Christianity from Islam, was released on Monday after what the government said was unprecedented international pressure. The security official said he did know the reason for the re-arrest. One of Ibrahim's lawyers said she was being held at a security building outside the airport with her husband and two children.

If you’re a student loan-burdened recent college graduate putting the final touches on a note to President Obama, thanking him for his recent executive order on debt repayment, don’t get too excited. (Snip) But if you look at the numbers closely, PAYE saves you money only if you borrowed big and earn little. The revised program caps monthly loan payments at 10 percent of discretionary income, defined as income exceeding 150 percent of the federal poverty level for a single person. Syria has handed over the last of its declared stockpile of chemical weapons, which will be destroyed at sea over the next two months, the UN´s chemical weapons watchdog has said. The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical weapons (OPCW) announced that the final 8% of Syria´s acknowledged arsenal of chemical weapons and precursors had been loaded on to a Danish freighter. The ship, the Ark Futura, is now sailing to the Italian port of Gioia Tauro for a rendezvous with an American vessel, the MV Cape Ray, which is specially equipped to neutralise the most dangerous of the chemical agents at sea.

New York - A federal appeals court on Monday released a previously secret memo that provided legal justification for using drones to kill Americans suspected of terrorism overseas. The memo concluded that the killing of an al-Qaida leader who had been born in the United States had legal justification. It said the authority to use lethal force abroad may apply in appropriate circumstances to a U.S. citizen who is part of the forces of an enemy organization. It said the killing was justified as long as it was carried out in accord with applicable laws of war. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan released the memo,

Fraud on the market is still the law of the land, but the U.S. Supreme Court may have made it harder for plaintiff lawyers to assemble the class actions they use to win billions of dollars in settlements per year. The high court, in Halliburton v. Erica P. John Fund, left intact a quarter-century old precedent that allows lawyers to use the price of a stock as evidence a company engaged in fraud, instead of taking the extra step of proving that investors bought shares in reliance of the company’s fraudulent statements. The Supreme Court mustn’t overturn precedents lightly, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in an opinion that was joined in part

Washington - The Supreme Court on Monday left in place a ban on sports gambling in New Jersey, rebuffing an attempt to bring betting on professional and college sporting events to Atlantic City casinos and the state´s racetracks. The justices did not comment in letting stand lower court rulings that struck down New Jersey´s sports betting law because it conflicts with a federal law that that allows state-sanctioned sports gambling only in Nevada and three other states. The state's appeal was led by Gov. Chris Christie and it argued that New Jersey was trying to limit illegal sports wagering and capture some of that money for the state treasury.

The justices said that the Environmental Protection Agency lacks authority in some cases to force companies to evaluate ways to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Putrajaya, Malaysia - Malaysia´s highest court on Monday dismissed a bid by Christians for the right to use the word "Allah", ending a years-long legal battle that has caused religious tensions in the Muslim-majority country. The Catholic Church had been seeking to reverse a government ban on it referring to God by the Arabic word "Allah" in the local Malay-language edition of its Herald newspaper. But a seven-judge panel in the administrative capital Putrajaya ruled a lower court decision siding with the government stood. "It (the Court of Appeal) applied the correct test, and it is not open for us to interfere," chief justice Arifin Zakaria said.

There are times that I have senior moments and forget certain names and events but after the recent Obama Iraq war implosion, I´m convinced most political pundits are suffering from them as well. What is unusual is that this revision of history is being committed by conservatives who should know better. Recent commentary by Glenn Beck, George Will and Charles Krauthammer indicate that they have significant memory lapses about why we went to war in Iraq. They now suggest that it was a wrong decision whereas my complaint is that we took too long to invade and oust Saddam Hussein.

‘R-E-S-P-E-C-T,” the song goes. It is easy enough to spell, but for some vocal critics of President Barack Obama, it seems exceedingly hard to do. As the president moves toward the land of the lame ducks, his political enemies are calling for blood. That’s no shocker at this stage of a presidency. In this case, the cuts go deeper. For some, it is not enough to disagree. Some high-status public figures seem determined to demean, denigrate and ridicule the president of the United States. On June 12 the Speaker of the U.S. House stepped to a podium and insulted Obama for his handling of

Noted management expert and Internal Revenue Service Commissioner John Koskinen was apparently called out of retirement — like the Ted Williams of evasive, unapologetic bureaucrats — to destroy what is left of his agency’s credibility. At immediate issue is two years of subpoenaed e-mails from former IRS official Lois Lerner to outside agencies, lost in a convenient computer crash. The possible involvement of other agencies is one focus of a congressional investigation into the heightened IRS scrutiny of conservative nonprofit groups before the 2012 election. In recent congressional testimony, Koskinen admitted that the e-mails

All the time I was growing up in Atlanta, the face of Robert E. Lee was taking shape on the side of an enormous granite mountain just outside town. US Secretary of State John Kerry has arrived in Iraq´s capital, Baghdad as Sunni insurgents expand their control of towns across north-western Iraq. In Egypt on Sunday, Mr Kerry warned that Sunni militants Isis´ "ideology of violence and repression is a threat not only to Iraq but to the entire region". The town controls the main road from the Syrian border to Mosul, Iraq´s second biggest city, which was captured by the rebels two weeks ago.
