Dem Rep.: ‘Members of Congress

Do you think members of Congress are overpaid or underpaid? Most likely you’d go with the former, but Democratic congressman Jim Moran argues it’s actually the latter. In an interview with CQ Roll Call, Moran says, “I think the American people should know that the members of Congress are underpaid.” The House recently took up a bill to freeze members’ paychecks, placing another halt on the annual cost-of-living pay increases they would normally get and keeping annual salary at $174,000. Moran believes that this is the wrong way to go, not necessarily talking about himself in particular, but saying there

Here´s my proposal. Pay legislators a million dollars yearly in special thirty year treasury bonds that cannot be sold or transferred until maturity and are payable only during the member´s lifetime. They could collect interest, but wouldn´t get the principle unless they lived past the maturity of the bond. This would provide an incentive to balance the budget and to retire before old age.

Maybe they could take a couple of those empty government buildings and build dorms for congress people who can´t afford a house in DC. I suggest though that Moran trying living within his means like the rest of us have to. By the way, I saw DC has the highest wine consumption of the whole country. Maybe he could cut back on that to save money.

I have two solutions. Instead of getting federal pay and benefits, let´s let each state pay their congressmen and senators from the state treasuries. That way each representative and senator would know how much their states values their work.

My second solution is to tell them to make do until the deficit spending is gone and the debt is down to the 2001 levels. Then we´ll talk.

If it were up to me they´d be paid a per-diem while they were in session plus travel pay to and from DC. They would ALL live in a dormitory at Fort Meade or one of the other military installations surrounding DC. Their meals would be provided and there would be NO retirement, except for Social Security. Term limits would be in effect and this would apply to ALL of Congress and the Supreme Court too.

Break up the overpriced "beltway" and move the House to the Midwest: say Oklahoma City, Kansas City, Dallas, etc.

That would fix it.

What about this, convene the House and Senate 4 times a year. Then go home to your real job.

After 2 terms, you go home permanently to your real job and are not allowed to work with any lobing efforts.

That is the way it should work.

WASHINGTON – Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson expressed confidence that the federal government can successfully deal with the surge of unaccompanied children crossing the southern border but it likely will cost billions of dollars to deal with the ongoing crisis. In testifying before the Senate Appropriations Committee, Johnson urged lawmakers to adopt the $3.7 billion plan proposed by President Obama, warning that revenues are running low in the Department of Homeland Security because of outlays already used to address the situation. Without the supplemental funding, Johnson told lawmakers, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will run out of money sometime in
