UConn orders shelter in place after
bomb threat made to campus building

New York Daily News, by Joe Kemp

Officials at the University of Connecticut warned students and faculty to take shelter on Thursday, after someone called in a bomb threat, according to a school alert. All students and staff inside the Tasker Building — where the school’s admissions offices are held — were told to take shelter in place after the threat was called in about 9:30 a.m., officials said. Everyone inside the building was told to stay in place and not flee through the school’s alert system. Officials ordered all others to stay away from the structure as response teams investigate the threat.

Has the official nomenclature been changed from `lock down` to `shelter in place`? When did this occur? Kind of like changing terrorism to workplace violence.

Qatar plans to buy US Patriot missile batteries and Apache attack helicopters in an arms deal worth about $11 billion, senior Pentagon officials said Monday. The sale would provide Qatar with roughly ten radars and 34 launchers for Patriot systems designed to knock out incoming missiles, as well as 24 Apache helicopters and Javelin anti-tank missiles. Qatar was investing in missile defense systems to counter the threat across the Gulf from Iran, which has built up its missile arsenal, officials said. Jerusalem - Israel is to indict three Jewish extremists with murder over the brutal killing of a Palestinian teenager, officials said Monday, as it emerged their initial target was an eight-year-old child. State governors from both parties have reacted cooly to efforts by the Obama administration to gain their support for placing thousands of unaccompanied Central American children with friends or family members. Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Matthews Burwell met privately with dozens of governors Sunday at the National Governors Association summer meeting in Nashville. According to those who attended the meeting, the governors expressed particular concerns about the costs to states, including that of providing public education for the children. Burwell left the meeting through a side door without talking to

Not even a week after it was offered, President Obama’s $3.7 billion plan to deal with the growing crisis along the U.S.-Mexico border appears all but dead, with Republican lawmakers Sunday decrying the administration’s “blank check” proposal and instead calling for a more targeted response centered on greater border security. Even Texas Gov. Rick Perry, personally recruited by the president to persuade Republicans to support the measure, threw cold water on the idea. He said the president doesn’t need that much money and instead should send National Guard troops to secure the border. The apparent defeat caps a whirlwind several days

Amid ongoing controversy over its scrutiny of non-profits, the Internal Revenue Service has decided it will no longer screen approximately 80% of the organizations seeking tax-exempt charitable status each year, a change that will ease the creation of small charities while doing away with a review intended to counter fraud and prevent political and other non-charitable groups from misusing the tax code. Sarah Palin wants to impeach Barack Obama. In an op-ed article published last week, the former Republican vice presidential nominee declared that the crisis on the southern border (where young illegal immigrants are being detained) "is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, ´No, mas´."
