PORTLAND, Ore.- When Rachel Martinez-Regan graduated from Corvallis High School this month, her diploma had a little something extra - an embossed seal certifying that she is bilingual. She is one of more than a dozen students at the Oregon high school who earned the distinction based on their proficiency in English and Spanish. The honor is part of a pilot project led by several school districts in the state with dual-language programs, and the Oregon Department of Education plans to make the bilingual seals available statewide next year. California, New Mexico, Washington, Illinois and Louisiana are among the other

President Obama is golfing Saturday with ESPN sports commentator Tony Kornheiser, for the third time in less than a year. Luke Rosa and Marvin Nicholson, a pair of White House staffers, round out the president’s foursome at Fort Belvoir in suburban Virginia, about a half hour outside Washington. Kornheiser, a former Washington Post columnist, co-hosts ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption” with Michael Wilbon. Kornheiser and Wilbon, another former Post columnist, both golfed with the president in July 2013 and September 2013.

(Video) Saturday at a press conference from the Rio Grande Valley, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) discussed her tour of a border holding facility and addressed the humanitarian crisis of thousands unaccompanied minors flooding across the U.S.-Mexico border, which she called a "humanitarian opportunity." Pelosi explained, "We are all Americans -- north and south in this hemisphere," and urged America to see this as not a crisis but an opportunity "to be helpful." She also said she wished she could simply "take home" the thousands of children temporarily housed in the overburden facilities. According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Ahmed Abu Khattala, a suspected Libyan ringleader of the 2012 terrorist embassy attack in Benghazi that killed four Americans, was brought Saturday from a Navy warship to the federal courthouse in the District, where he entered a plea of not guilty to a single conspiracy charge. Just before 3:30 p.m., Abu Khattala walked into a courtroom in downtown Washington unshackled, wearing a black zip-up hoodie and black pants. He appeared in public for the first time 13 days after he was captured in Libya and hours after a brief sunrise helicopter ride from the USS New York, which had transported

The controversy over President Obama’s decision to exchange five high-ranking Taliban leaders for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl last month focused largely on the price paid. There was less focus on Obama ignoring a federal law that required him to notify Congress 30 days in advance of releasing detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Laws such as this have been enacted to allow vital oversight of actions of such consequence. If this were an isolated instance, it could be dismissed. It is not. After announcing that he intended to act unilaterally in the face of congressional opposition, Obama ordered the non-enforcement of

In this way, for one: they have figured out how to make childishness pay. I have highlighted, from time to time, the low-grade emails that the Democratic Party uses to fire up, and seek donations from, its supporters. To put it gently, the party’s communications suggest that its leaders believe most Democrats are stupid. Currently, the Democrats are using John Boehner’s plan to sue President Obama, seeking a judicial declaration that some of his executive orders have been unconstitutional, as a fundraising prop. So last night I got this email (not the first on this topic). From: DCCC Update-Date: June

Simply because of the Fifth Amendment. Does invoking the Fifth Amendment indicate guilt? With the news of a massive influx of immigrants on the southern border, a new Gallup Poll shows that only 22% of Americans favor increased immigration. Only 14% of Republicans, 23% of independents, and 27% of Democrats favor increased immigration. The poll actually revealed a strong desire among Americans to decrease immigration, as 41% of respondents thought immigration should be decreased. This included 50% of GOP voters, 43% of independents, and 32% of Democrats. The percentage of those preferring to decrease immigration has jumped from 35% in 2012 and 2013 to 41% in 2014. Comparisons between Hillary Clinton and Mitt Romney have been greatly exaggerated, Hillary Clinton says. Clinton practically rolled with laughter when PBS’ Gwen Ifill noted humorlessly that her own husband has been “forced” to defend her recent comments about being “dead broke” after leaving the White House. What was humorous in that remarks is known only to Clinton. “I shouldn’t have said the, I think, five or so words that I said,” the former secretary of state said. “My inartful use of those five words doesn’t change who I am.” Later in the interview, Ifill asked if Clinton had become the Democratic adaptation of

Lois Lerner is back in the news cycle after the IRS told a House committee recently a chunk of her emails are missing because of a failed hard drive, with House Republicans holding multiple hearings on the matter in the past week. And in an interview with POLITICO, Lerner’s lawyer says it’s “a little brazen to think she did this on purpose.” William Taylor III says all the Republican hand-wringing about Lerner doing something sinister is just “silly” because, he said, she honestly doesn’t know what happened to the emails. A shocking new report from the Center for Immigration Studies claims to prove that every single new job created in America for the last fourteen years has gone to immigrants, legal and illegal. This would fly in the face of those who claim that immigration is an economic boon to native born Americans: The CIS report found that over the last 14 years, people who were born in the United States held 114.8 million jobs in 2000, and held 114.7 million jobs in 2014, a drop of 127,000. Were Lois Lerner’s allegedly lost emails actually destroyed? An Ohio-based trade association, the International Association of Information Technology Asset Managers (IAITAM), isn’t so sure, and they don’t find IRS commissioner Koskinen’s explanation of their loss very plausible. IAITAM administers internationally accepted certifications for information technology professionals. According to the group’s standards, if Lerner’s supposedly malfunctioning hardware was properly destroyed, there would be records of it. Dr. Barbara Rembiesa, president of IAITAM, questions whether there is documentation of the destruction of the files. Who performed the work, says Rembiesa, is important because not all IT professionals are IAITAM certified. “The notion

Dear Secretary Clinton, Please consider this in the nature of a friendly intervention. You have a money problem. It’s time to deal with it before it gets worse. Actually, you have two money problems. The first is how you talk about it. The second is how you collect it — or, to be more precise, the fact that you’re still frenetically collecting it. Let me be clear at the outset: The issue isn’t that you’re rich, or even that you and your husband became rich after leaving office. What transpired in the Mississippi Senate run-off is a red line for many conservatives across the country, because the Republican Party establishment essentially took a civil war and escalated it to a war for independence. It’s one thing to oppose your base in a primary. It’s entirely another to despicably play the race card against your base, and bolster the legitimacy of the propaganda of our race-baiting opponents on the Left. But that’s exactly what the Kamikaze pilots running the GOP did. As a result, Chris McDaniel won Republican voters handily on Tuesday, but still lost the run-off statewide thanks

Too far, and their tactics are likely to leave permanent scars in a civil war with Tea Party forces that are out of all proportion to the importance the establishment placed on saving one 76-year-old senator’s ability to please Washington’s K Street lobbying interests. “This is a win for the establishment, but it’s a win with an asterisk, because it’s so tainted that it might be one of those things where they’re going to be sorry they ever won the runoff in Mississippi,” Craig
