The federal government is headed for a crisis, a new report warns, and without reforms, a homegrown problem threatens to derail everything from foreign policy, to entitlements, to food safety. The problem is the way the government manages its more than 2 million civil servants, according to a report from the nonprofit Partnership for Public Service and government consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton.

Comments:
Report says that only 9% of Federal workforce is under 30 years old and over 30% of Federal employees could retire by 2017. I see this as good news, since it provides an opportunity for next President to significantly downsize government workers through attrition. Also, replace leftists with good people.

I can think of a whole slew of IRS agents who could be furloughed right now.

Another problem is that they give preference to minorities and vets, with little regard for qualifications. I know a guy who did a few years in the navy in the 1980´s and has been civil service for 20 or more years. He is the laziest most inept jerk they could have hired, but he had all the preferences. Now he cant be removed, so not only does he cost money and not produce, other employees have to take up the slack. The way the system is set up he is safe.

And here I thought this report was going to be about the corruption of the current system. A system that has become more and more self-serving with little or no regard to serving the citizens who pay for it.

If Fiesta del Sol were queen, the term civil servants would be banished. WE are the servants! We don´t have lifetime retirement and benefits. The weeks upon weeks of paid vacation, etc. the federal government could fire 20% of its workforce! and who would notice?

There is a big reason why there are fewer young people working in government...at least on the military side of government. Many positions require experience of some kind to even be considered for a job. As a military analyst it is extraordinarily helpful to have military experience, even better to have combat experience. That means older workers. Overall, the govt´s way of hiring is just awful and the people who run it are often just as bad. It takes weeks to months to get hired because the process is so cumbersome. It took almost 4 months to start working as a RN for the Army after I was hired.

It is also an argument against Congressional term limits: the "snivel servants" would know they´d be there long after any "mere" elected person got term limited out.
As it is, these people already have FAR too much power and are effectively immune from accountability.
Where in the Constitution is there a provision for this 4th branch of government?

They are not "civil" and "servants". They are our rude and obnoxious lords and masters. They are also not "outdated" since this attitude never seems to go out of style.

#7 nailed it - they know they can´t be fired let alone be disciplined. Most are minorities and Democrats and just shuffle paper. Most don´t even have enough work to fill an 8 hour day. Pay and benefits now far surpass the public sector. Long past time to clean house but nothing will be done. Just keep in mind obamacare will be run by Federal employees like those at the Post Office, EPA and IRS.

#5, nearly all young people in the military today have some combat experience, but as you state, the hiring process is so archaic and glacial that they might not want to apply. Plus, as a young vigorous person who WANTS to work hard, why oh WHY would you want to work with some slothful civil servants?

I´m exaggerating quite a bit; I know plenty of GS types who work for the Air Force and Joint Staff, and they are all conscientious and hard-working. But there has been a hiring freeze for a while, which ages the workforce quickly.

Government has one purpose- to grow! Expansion is endemic in government because it is a power structure and the nature of power structures is always to gain more power! More regulations means more power, which means more employees, which means more power, which means more regulations, which means more ...

You get what you pay for.

Who do you want to run things and give services?

Pride in ones service facilitates loyalty.Reagan trickle down gave the raises to the CEO types, undermined the lower graded clerical jobs which are now affirmative action jobs, and created grade creep to give more money to the college grads and professionals for even more money at the top.

A minimum wage job without career options and loyal Joe taxpayer expects brilliance on the front lines?

Only love of country keeps some Civil Servants serving. Thankless job and used as political footballs, we are lucky other jobs are worse.

Does America want Federal retirees who qualify for poverty programs and military?

Shake up the system and you may only get more graft.

President Obama evidently has decided not to put a human face on the crisis unfolding at the U.S. southern border—not even his own. The White House said over and over again Monday that Obama will not travel to the border with Mexico despite flying to Texas this week to raise money for Democratic candidates there. It´s certainly in part a political decision, one meant to avoid taking ownership of a difficult issue on which the White House would prefer to share blame.
