Solutions sought to reduce
food waste in schools

Los Angeles Times, by Teresa Watanabe

Original Article

Posted By:Fiesta del sol, 4/2/2014 9:01:16 AM

It´s lunchtime at Washington Preparatory High School in Los Angeles, but 16-year-old Parrish Jackson has barely touched her turkey burger and apricots. She´s dumping them into the trash can.The apricots are "sour," the junior says. The meat is "nasty." If it were up to her, she would just have taken the potato wedges — they´re close enough to fries — then headed to the student store to fuel up on hot Cheetos.(snip)But under federal school meal rules finalized in 2012, Parrish and other students must take at least three items — including one fruit or vegetable — even if they don´t

Comments:
You have to read the article. The dippy eggheads who claim that "exposure" to healthy foods eventually makes them healthier.

The answer is too simple for the food police to understand. Put up a McDonalds menu and let the kids choose from that.

There! I solved the food waste problem.

If we can´t ban public schools, then we should ban public school lunch, especially in high schools.

Having schools engage in foodservice makes as much sense as having a library in a McDonald´s. They serve diametrically opposed aims. And, as usual, leftists cannot watch human beings engage in the most basic activities of existence like eating without injecting politics and ideology (see also: restrooms, drinking water, procreation, etc.).

Many high schools once had ´open lunch´ where students left campus. It took the schools out of the meal equation. Many schools quashed the idea under the rubric of safety but the truth is they couldn´t stand to watch any independent thought or action by students take place.

If I am going to be paying for the lunch, the lunch should be healthy. If the girl doesn´t want to eat apricots and turkey burgers then she doesn´t need a free lunch.

Humans are amazingly omnivorous.

If you run 5 miles before breakfast you can eat any damn thing you like (and lots of it) and still be healthy as a race horse.

I worry about the emerging culture of infinite
sensitivity, wherein one demonstrates one´s nutritional insight by ´discovering´ an ever expanding list of substances that one is ´sensitive´to.

The hell is going on here ?

Our culture used to proclaim the virtues of being absolutely dominant, top of the food chain, ´can´t catch me´, world beaters.

What happened ?

How long have I been sleeping ?

It´s all about the money. These suppliers and vendors that truck this delicious food to the cafeteria make a lot of money and frankly they don´t care if it gets eaten or not. Solution: Get government out of the kitchen and let parents decide what to send in the lunch box.
Then allow their PTA and school board to have the ultimate authority over menu content and not Nancy Pelosi, Moochie Zero and Eric Holder.

My last good school lunch was over 60 years ago in the Allapattah Elementary School in Miami, FL. Since then I´ve eaten or refused to eat in the schools of four of my children and they all requested a home made bag lunch instead. I didn´t blame them. The food is disgusting.

In my youth our school served a full hot lunch of meat, starch and green veg. There was always a piece of delicious apple, cherry, peach or pumpkin pie (all home made in the school kitchen). We the kids did all the clean up (scraping plates, loading dishwasher and table detail) and got a free lunch for our work. Those were the days, when our mothers would come to lunch frequently and gladly pay the .25 cents to partake with their children. We loved the lady who ran the kitchen, planned the menus and made sure that everything was up to her highest standards. The food was consistently excellent over the years.

How Thad Cochran´s campaign pulled it off

Thad Cochran’s political resurrection began with a campaign shakeup and ended with a Hail Mary television ad. Just three weeks ago, in the dead of night on June 3, the Mississippi senator’s staff sat shaken and dejected, crestfallen at the results of a primary that deprived the six-term incumbent of an electoral majority. With Cochran forced into a runoff fight against an aggressive and energetic challenger, a dark mood shadowed his backers in Washington and Mississippi.Yet almost immediately, the Cochran coalition began bouncing back. Even on that gloomy night of June 3, Cochran adviser Stuart Stevens was insisting to staffers: “We’re

They may teach business classes at Brooklyn College, but the school’s liberal leaders have told two of the country’s top businessmen to take their money and shove it because they don’t like their conservative politics, a veteran faculty member charges. The CUNY college has turned down a $10 million grant offer from the Koch brothers, said business professor Mitchell Langbert — who called the decision by School of Business Dean William Hopkins a knee-jerk reaction to the mega-rich industrialists’ support of Republican causes. “It’s political correctness. It’s intolerance about anyone who doesn’t toe the left-wing line,” Langbert told The Post. Langbert

The Seattle-based chain also raised prices on some of the drinks sold in its cafes a year ago. The latest hikes don´t seem to be driven purely by the surging bean costs that have pressured other coffee sellers to raise prices, however, since Starbucks has said it already locked in its coffee contracts for the rest of this fiscal year and much of the

There are plenty of circumstances in which that pithy imperative —variously attributed to Disraeli, Queen VIctoria, and sundry other worthies — wins my admiration. “Never apologize, never explain”: I like the blunt, no-nonsense aroma it exudes, the hinted-at announcement that there will be no wallowing in unproductive self-recriminations or manufactured displays of contrition. There is a reason, I think, that the motto seems traceable to Victorian times: an era when manly forthrightness still had a prominent place in the economy of public life. But context is everything. It is one thing to say “Never apologize, never explain” as an adjunct

The VA has acknowledged her facility manipulated patient wait-time records to trigger bonuses. The U.S. House Veterans´ Affairs Committee on Friday examined how the VA awards bonuses and whether the criteria used to grant them reward executives who engage in bad behavior or create incentives to falsify information.
