Why the All-Ivy League Story Stirs Up Tensions
Between African Immigrants and Black Americans

Atlantic Wire, by Arit John

The story of the first-generation Ghanian-American student accepted by all eight Ivy league schools is wonderful, but it also stirs up the tension between black Americans and recent African immigrants — especially when you describe him as "not a typical African-American kid." That´s been the reaction to USA Today´s profile on Kwasi Enin, a Long Island high schooler who got into the nation´s most competitive schools through hard work and, according to IvyWise CEO Katherine Cohen, being African (and being male). At one point the piece reads: Being a first-generation American from Ghana also helps him stand out, Cohen says. "He´s

Who cares? Really - it is time we realized that attending one of these fantasy land liberal education camps has no meaning. This kid could get a great pre med education at a SUNY school and go on to be a great doctor. If he goes to Yale or Harvard he might decide to become a community organizer or a lawyer and waste his talents.

In general all immigrants do better than our lower class, because they come to be better off than they were in their old country.
That´s what made America great.
We did not get stupid , lazy people. We got people that had the knowledge and confidence to succeed .
They looked around at their country and knew they could do better.
Things have changed. Our liberals don´t let Europeans and other advanced peoples into our country. They let Mexicans and South Americans simply cross our borders so they can get welfare and vote for liberals.

Here´s the key:

Enin got accepted at all the Ivy League schools because of his hard work and diligence.

American blacks could care less about hard work and diligence; they just want it handed to them.

Mr. Enin achieved these invitations through hard work. Non-immigrants want it handed to them on a platter with flashbulbs blaring. The sitting pResident is the most obvious exception. Affirmative Action doesn´t make headlines any more.

Same pattern in the UK. Children of recent immigrants from the Sub-continent do better at school than second or third generation kids. Nothing racist. But saying ´nothing racist´ is becoming racist these days.

What stigma do the children really face?? The only ones racist here are the blacks themselves. I can´t say anyone sees children in a bad fashion, there are many examples of mixed race couplings and the children are not ostracized for it. Some areas are rampant with mixed race children.

Didn´t Barack write about nursing his racial grievances? Didn´t he also write that he was able to take advantage of his white grandparents, playing on their racial guilt?
Barack represents the worst aspect of diversity for diversity´s sake, which is spouted by all colleges and universities, except their sports teams.

I don´t have the cultural skills or experiences to understand the resentment among African/Caribbean/Aboriginal/American black groups. I´m in the middle of a book by a respected Nigerian-born woman who tries to explain. Each group feels either superior or inferior to various other groups for reasons beyond my comprehension. All of it comes together in the United States.

One thing I love about Utah is that most of its minorities are 1st generation mates of missionaries, and therefore also not exposed to most of America´s black culture.

Over 10 years ago I was involved in setting up a recruitment office for a federal agency. As anyone with experience in the federal government can tell you, an office - or even an agency - lives and dies by their metrics. (Which is why this whole "We don´t know the numbers crap is pure BS on toast!) I was intermediary between the govies and the new technology being put in place for recruiting. I was surprised to find out that there had been quit a backlash from African immigrants about being lumped in with "African-Americans". They wanted their accomplishments to stand out. I looked up at my black director apparently in surprise and she looked at me and said "Yeah, they don´t want anything to do with us". Which is why there is a separate code in the federal accounting system for ethnicity between the two.

Anecdotally, I once worked with a brilliant man from Zimbabwe. He and his brother were both computer engineers - his brother worked for Cisco at the time. He told me stories of growing up and how if they brought home a report card with a grade less than an A they went to their rooms until their Father got home and their Mom showed him the grades. Boy, when Dad saw the grades, they had to "assume the position" with hands on the wall and got strapped pretty good with Dad´s belt. When he related this to his pre-teen sons, one of them smarted off and said something to the effect of calling 911. To which he replied "If you do, you´re going back to Africa to live with your Grandparents." He said they never said anything like that again. ;-D

I have met successful blacks from Haiti, Jamaica, Nigeria, Ghana, and finally Ethiopia. What they all had in common, in my observation, was they did not see themselves as victims of white oppression and were not hindered in our society from taking advantage of its opportunities. As I said earlier; it´s more cultural than color being the factor for American blacks´ overall failures.

On this Independence Day it’s worth hearing how the American Longrifle helped win the battle for American freedom. If you don’t know this rifle’s starring role in American history you can’t understand America’s link to the gun or why so many firearms manufacturers are moving or expanding away from states that have banned their products. For this history lesson I stopped in to see Phil Schreier, the senior curator for the NRA’s National Firearms Museum, in Fairfax, VA. As we stood in the middle of the biggest gun museum in all the world he told me, “If school kids were

The headline of today’s jobs report, that 288,000 jobs were created in the last month, is positive. At least, it is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. However, as with most economic reports these days, there is a veneer of good news — but when you look closer, the White House is using the positive headlines to hide the growing deterioration of the American workforce. I’m sure by now people are tired of reading about the bad news, and I’ll admit I am weary of having to blow the whistle and expose the truth every
