Four Simple Words
PJ Media, by Richard Fernandez

The rhetorical question is often asked: what do conservatives want president Obama to do about the Ukraine? As one commenter put it: “are you suggesting we should mobilize and take off on another foreign adventure to secure Ukraine?” This completely misstates the problem whose roots lie in the understanding of four very common words: could, can’t, won’t and will. One way to respond to the rhetorical question above is to facetiously answer: “no it’s better to wait until Putin reaches the border of Poland or tries to take over Finland.” After all Finland has been mentioned in the press as a

We asked people in BuzzFeed’s U.K. office to tell us what stereotypes they had of every state in the U.S.A. Here are their responses. We’re so terribly sorry, America. Here is it in more detail, broken state-by-state. First up, Alaska and Hawaii.(Snip for map)The West.(Snip for map)The Middle Bit.(Snip for map)And the North East, with all the fiddly little states.

It’s a bit cheeky to compare neo-libertarian Senator Rand Paul to the late leftist songwriting icon Pete Seeger, but they share a naive sense of the possibilities of politics that is too obvious to ignore. That’s especially true now that Paul has elevated himself into a serious presidential contender seeking to shift the conservative movement away from its roots in multiple non-socialist traditions into something more monolithic and millenarian in its outlook and its aims. This morning’s New York Times profile of Sen. Paul’s fundraising efforts serves as a fresh reminder of that. Paul’s basic message is that the American Right

Rank-ordering the lies of President Obama is a daunting task. But high on any sound list, though absent from most actual ones, is Obama’s claim that al Qaeda has been “decimated” and is “on the path to defeat.” This claim was ripped to shreds yesterday at an AEI conference called “Getting it right: A better strategy to defeat al Qaeda. You can watch that event here and I encourage you to do so. I’ll discuss the “better strategy” later. For now, I want to focus on al Qaeda’s ascendency and President Obama’s willful failure to deal with our most dangerous and lethal

Obama to pitch U.S. immigration

SEOUL -- President Obama plans to honor those who died in the Korean War with a surprising message for a foreign audience: a pitch for immigration reform back home. At a naturalization ceremony Friday for 13 U.S. service members and seven military spouses stationed in South Korea, he will offer a tribute to the contributions that naturalized American citizens have made through military service, according to an official familiar with the event. The ceremony offers a rare setting for a recurrent Obama message: that the U.S. will benefit if immigrants who already make the sacrifices of citizenship can enjoy the rights and

‘Gutless.” That word perfectly describes Obama’s “policy” on the Keystone XL pipeline. That this adjective rolled off the tongue of a union boss makes it as delicious as it is accurate. “In another gutless move, the Administration is delaying a finding on whether the pipeline is in the national interest,” said Terry O’Sullivan, general president of the Laborers’ International Union of North America. “This certainly is no example of profiles in courage. It’s clear the Administration needs to grow a set of antlers, or perhaps take a lesson from Popeye and eat some spinach.” Terry O’Sullivan is right. And so are the eleven

TOKYO — President Barack Obama spent his first full day of a weeklong Asia trip aimed at renewing U.S. ties to the region with the red-carpeted pomp of a state dinner, a visit to a shrine _ where he left a prayer card _ and the “full trust” of Japan’s prime minister that the U.S. will back it in a tiff over disputed land with China. Obama isn’t leaving here with a long-sought agreement on opening up Asia to trade with the United States, but he heads Friday to South Korea with a measure of support from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo

Secretary of State John Kerry delivered a stern warning to Russia Thursday evening, one week after a tentative agreement to defuse the crisis in Ukraine appeared to have no impact on the violent clashes between pro-Russian separatists and the Ukrainian government. "The window to change course is closing," Kerry told reporters at the State Department. "President [Vladimir] Putin and Russia face a choice." If Russia does not reverse course and take action to urge the separatists to stand down and give up their arms, Kerry said the U.S. and its allies are poised to take actions directed at hurting Russia´s economy.

The Romney strategy is back. Not the flawed campaign plan of Mitt Romney for the 2012 election, but the effort by President Obama and Democrats to malign Romney, even before he’d become the GOP nominee, as morally unfit for the presidency. Now the strategy is focused on Republican Senate candidates, some of them still running in contested primaries. From Democratic TV ads, we learn that Dan Sullivan in Alaska may not be “one of us,” a true Alaskan. Tom Cotton in Arkansas, having worked for insurance companies, is “a politician we just can’t trust.” And Bill Cassidy in Louisiana sought

WASHINGTON — President Obama’s relentless push for some sort of first-stage Mideast peace deal by the end of this month was dealt a strong blow by Fatah and Hamas deciding to put aside their differences and unite. Hamas’ information office said the pact between Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas political bureau leader Khaled Mashal was simply implementing the previous unity agreements signed years ago in Doha and Cairo — pacts followed by years of vicious fighting between the parties. Abbas agreed to “start talks on forming the new transitional national unity government that will be formed within five weeks, and

First lady Michelle Obama took her campaign to help veterans find jobs to Fort Campbell, Ky.., Wednesday where she said that most Americans don´t know much about the military. Following comments from Jill Biden, the vice president´s wife and Obama´s teammate in helping veterans, she noted that unlike Biden, she had little familiarity with the military prior to campaigning for the White House in 2008. “Unlike Jill, I wasn´t a military mom. I wasn´t a Blue Star family member. I didn´t know much about the military, and I was probably more like the average American,” said Obama.

In advance of President Obama’s four-nation Asian tour this week, the Washington Post published an article saying this: President Obama’s bid to focus U.S. attention on Asia has failed to meet the lofty expectations he set three years ago in a grand pronouncement that the new emphasis would become a pillar of his foreign policy. [Snip] By now, nearly five and a half years into the Obama presidency, objective people can draw reasonable conclusions, among which are these: Barack Obama was among the least prepared men to ever serve as presidency. It shows. He has been overmatched by events right from the start.

Anyone expecting rancher Cliven Bundy to apologize at a news briefing Thursday for widely condemned remarks — that black people were “happier” during the slavery era than now — would be disappointed. Wearing his signature cowboy hat, Bundy, who led an armed confrontation with federal rangers over a land dispute and was then hailed as a patriot by Fox News’ Sean Hannity and other conservatives, repeated in Bunkerville, Nevada, what he had said earlier — he was “just wondering” if blacks were better off under slavery. At least 40 U.S. veterans died waiting for appointments at the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care system, many of whom were placed on a secret waiting list. The secret list was part of an elaborate scheme designed by Veterans Affairs managers in Phoenix who were trying to hide that 1,400 to 1,600 sick veterans were forced to wait months to see a doctor, according to a recently retired top VA doctor and several high-level sources. For six months, CNN has been reporting on extended delays in health care appointments suffered by veterans across the country and who died while waiting for appointments and care.

President Obama’s landslide victory in 2008 was supposed to herald the beginning of a new Democratic era. And yet, six years later, there is not even a clear Democratic majority in the country, let alone one poised for 30 years of dominance. It’s not because Mr. Obama’s so-called new coalition of young and nonwhite voters failed to live up to its potential. They again turned out in record numbers in 2012. The Democratic majority has failed to materialize because the Republicans made large, countervailing and unappreciated gains of their own among white Southerners.
