Suspicion grows that China is exporting
deflation worldwide by driving down yuan
Telegraph [UK], by Ambrose Evans-Pritchard    Original Article

The Chinese Yuan weakened yet again this morning, punching through the key line of 6.25 against the dollar. It is almost back to where it was two years ago. This is the biggest story in the global currency markets. Yuan devaluation has reached 3.1pc this year. The longer this goes on, the harder it is to accept Beijing’s story that it is one-off measure to teach speculators a lesson and curb hot money inflows. The US Treasury clearly suspects that the Chinese authorities have reverted to their mercantilist tricks, driving down the exchange rate to keep struggling exporters afloat. Officials briefed

Tony Blair Gets It.
If Only the Current Batch
of World Leaders Did Too
Breitbart London [UK], by James Delingpole    Original Article

To those many of us in Britain who loathe Tony Blair and the disastrous legacy of his horribly misconceived "Third Way", it always comes as a bit of a shock to hear our cringe-inducing ex-Prime Minister stand up on the international stage and say something truly worthwhile. [Snip] Here´s one of the passages which shows that Blair totally (or--as we´ll see in a moment--almost but not quite totally) gets it. It´s on the subject of all those voices in the media and politics who find a way of excusing the worst excesses of Islamism. "However for the purposes of this

President Obama reportedly only ate half of the expensive sushi dinner he was treated to last night in Tokyo. Instead of savoring every morsel of the made-to-order 20-course meal at Sukiyabashi Jiro- dubbed the world´s best sushi restaurant and the subject of the 2011 documentary ´Jiro Dreams of Sushi´- the President reportedly put his chopsticks down after only 10 pieces. The owner of a chicken restaurant that sits in the same basement as the exclusive diner told Tokyo Broadcasting System that Obama stopped at the halfway point even though the famed chef, Jiro Ono, was making each piece especially for

A Department of Justice official told MailOnline on Thursday that looming protests by state lawmakers and a need to protect Attorney General Eric Holder´s image among law enforcement officers caused him to pull out of a planned speech in Oklahoma City. [Snip] That address didn´t occur, however. Seven Oklahoma legislators were preparing to lead a crowd of hundreds in protests across the street, most calling for Holder´s impeachment. ´Look, the attorney general isn´t afraid of a few protesters,´ the DOJ source said. ´But you have to understand that it´s legacy building time around here, and no one wants him to get

Our Typhoon fighters look flashy, but

RAF Typhoons were scrambled yesterday in an impressive show of force to buzz a Russian bomber flying a bit too close to British airspace for comfort. Although the sight of Britain’s most sophisticated fighter jet shadowing the ageing Russian Tupolev-95--a dinosaur from the Cold War--gives the reassuring impression that we have a military edge over Moscow, this image could not be further from the truth. If the worst case scenario in Ukraine were to transpire, tipping the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation into a conventional war to defend Europe against the advancing massed ranks of Russian tank divisions there is little we could

´Guns everywhere!´: Georgia governor

The Peach State is poised to become a petri-dish for the nation´s most ambitious gun-rights experiment, following Gov. Nathan Deal´s signing of a law that will permit concealed-carry permit holders to keep their weapons as they enter non-secure areas of airports, along with some churches and bars, and most government buildings. Lawmakers, which passed the bill by wide bipartisan margins in he waning hours of the year´s legislative session, notably excluded the state capitol where they work from the list of places where pre-vetted Georgians can now pack heat without penalty. Reaction was swift and incendiary. Time magazine called the move

This week the National Journal carried a very neat example of the gulf between the moderate "country club" Republican elite and the more conservative blue-collar grassroots that tend to dominate GOP primaries, and then lose general elections in today´s more secular, ethnically diverse America. The piece--well worth reading--tells the story of a US Senate candidate in Georgia who attacked his fellow Republican primary opponents for their lack of education and sophistication, at one point openly mocking the fact that "There´s a high school graduate in the race" and asking how, in a global economy, the semi-educated could possibly bring value

Two of the dead were a visiting father and son, Minister of Health Soraya Dalil said. The other victim was a Cure International doctor who had worked for seven years in Kabul. She said an American nurse had also been wounded in the attack.

A lot of people hate Tony Blair, and hate him in particular for what he did in the Middle East, and so when he made a speech today on the need for a broad front to combat Islamism they came out with a torrent of abuse. That is a mistake because most of his speech, properly understood, is a giant mea culpa. Since most people think that this mea culpa is necessary, perhaps they should listen. He is also right – and a lot of his critics would probably agree - that both political and militant Islamism are giant challenges

First lady Michelle Obama took her campaign to help veterans find jobs to Fort Campbell, Ky.., Wednesday where she said that most Americans don´t know much about the military. Following comments from Jill Biden, the vice president´s wife and Obama´s teammate in helping veterans, she noted that unlike Biden, she had little familiarity with the military prior to campaigning for the White House in 2008. “Unlike Jill, I wasn´t a military mom. I wasn´t a Blue Star family member. I didn´t know much about the military, and I was probably more like the average American,” said Obama.

Jeb Bush said Wednesday he´s "thinking about running for president," in his most direct statement yet about a possible 2016 run. The former Florida governor spoke at a Catholic school benefit in New York Wednesday morning. He previously has said he´ll make a decision on whether to run for president before the end of this year, making clear that he was considering the possibility. But his comments on Wednesday appeared to be more direct. Asked what his "immediate plans" were, he said, according to an attendee: "I´m thinking about running for president." Today is Earth Day. Fox News’ The Five opened its show with a nearly 15 minute segment titled “Earth Day Hysteria.” The goal appeared to be to prove that scientists’ warnings about climate change are overblown and should be ignored if not outright mocked and co-host Eric Bolling was the ringleader of the effort. But he found an adversary in Bob Beckel, who challenged the status quo by presenting actual data on the rise of CO2 levels from NASA, of all places. But before Beckel got to his chart, Bolling took some time to “praise” President Barack Obama for what

At least 40 U.S. veterans died waiting for appointments at the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care system, many of whom were placed on a secret waiting list. The secret list was part of an elaborate scheme designed by Veterans Affairs managers in Phoenix who were trying to hide that 1,400 to 1,600 sick veterans were forced to wait months to see a doctor, according to a recently retired top VA doctor and several high-level sources. For six months, CNN has been reporting on extended delays in health care appointments suffered by veterans across the country and who died while waiting for appointments and care.

Just three months after Rep. Trey Radel resigned his safe Republican seat in southwest Florida, Republican voters have chosen his likely successor: Curt Clawson. He won the election the old-fashioned way, by making a ton of money in the private sector and then splattering the airwaves with TV ads. In the process, Clawson rolled up endorsements from local Tea Party leaders and from the Tea Party Express. It wasn´t that he was particularly conservative -- he had no prior political record, and had even donated to Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow. It was enough, according to the Tea Party Express, that he
