SANTIAGO - A major earthquake of magnitude 8.0 struck off the coast of Chile on Tuesday, triggering a tsunami that hit the northern part of the country and a tsunami warning for all of South and Central America´s Pacific coast. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was very shallow, only 6.2 miles below the seabed, and struck at 6:46 p.m. local time (2346 GMT) 62 miles northwest of the mining port of Iquique, near the Peruvian border. The Chilean navy said the first tsunami wave had hit the coast within 45 minutes of the quake. "An earthquake of this

Monster quake in Chile. You´d feel an 8. Pray they are all right, especially the men in the mines.

First reports show the tsunami waves are relatively small. Iquique has lost power but otherwise ok. Some landslides have occurred with coastal evacuations ordered in the area. Mines in the area also report little or no damage. These are quick reports from the major news sources and may not be accurate as time goes on.

Six and seven foot waves have been reported at Iquique.

Illegal immigrants are being secretly flown to Massachusetts and kept in local lockups in an under-the-radar operation that has alarmed lawmen who are raising health and security concerns amid recent spikes in detainees coming up from Texas during the latest border crisis. “We’re all becoming border sheriffs now with these people being carted all over the country,” said Bristol County Sheriff Thomas M. Hodgson. “The blame goes all the way up. It’s a travesty and people ought to be upset,” Hodgson said. “This is un-American and has raised the stakes to the public health and public safety threat.” Hodgson said buses from his

Rio de Janeiro - Brazilians bitter about their team´s disastrous World Cup celebrated Argentina´s defeat to Germany in the final Sunday by dancing and launching fireworks, relieved that their arch-rivals failed to triumph on their soil. In Brasilia and Sao Paulo, fireworks exploded after Mario Goetze scored in extra-time to give the Germans a last-gasp victory at Rio de Janeiro´s Maracana Stadium. At a bar near the stadium, Brazilians chanted "Cry! Cry! Argentina!" in a nod to the song "Don´t cry for me Argentina." Riot police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse a group of rock-throwing vandals who disturbed a rally by Argentines celebrating their team´s gutsy performance in a 1-0 loss to Germany in the World Cup finals. Thousands of Argentines, saddened but proud, had gathered peacefully at the iconic Obelisk in downtown Buenos Aires to applaud their team´s best World Cup performance in 24 years. Police initially remained on the sidelines as fans poured into downtown Buenos Aires. But late Sunday night they began chasing down vandals. The youths, many of them with their faces covered and drinking heavily, responded by hurling

It’s not often that North Korean-flagged freighters turn up near America’s shores, but when they do, they deserve attention. North Korea has a prolific record of arms smuggling, narcotics dealing, counterfeiting, terrorist ties and missile and nuclear proliferation. So, let’s hope U.S. authorities are keeping a close eye on a North Korean cargo ship called the Mu Du Bong, which late last month called at Cuba, then vanished from the commercial shipping grid for more than a week. This past Thursday, July 10, the Mu Du Bong reappeared at Havana, then began steaming north of Cuba, and as of this

The Chilean government released a report about two high-quality photos it believes could indicate a close encounter. The particular incident under investigation occurred at the remote Collahuasi copper mine in Chile’s Atacama Desert back in April 2013, when four technicians working at the mine witnessed a disc-shaped object approach the area slowly, hover for about an hour over the mine before finally heading off to the east. In an op-ed article published last week, the former Republican vice presidential nominee declared that the crisis on the southern border (where young illegal immigrants are being detained) "is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, ´No, mas´." The Republican Speaker of the House, John Boehner, thinks that´s loco. (Technically, he said, "I disagree".) Where is the red line of impeachment? In theory, a red line might be located somewhere on a list of impeachable offenses – perhaps at the point where a certain number of transgressions is exceeded, or next to a specific instance because of its significance or impact. In reality, though, that red line exists along a spectrum of “political will.” As Andrew McCarthy explained: “You can have a thousand provable impeachable offenses, but before Congress may remove the president from power, there must be strong popular support – a public will that cuts across partisan and ideological lines.”
