Black Death wasn´t actually
bubonic plague, study finds

Foxnews.com, by Kate Seamons

A fascinating sidebar to the news that some of the skeletons dug up in London during excavation for a train line last year are indeed the remains of Black Death victims: The Observer zeroes in on a new theory as to how the disease spread, and according to researchers, we might want to stop pinning the blame on fleas.

Those familiar with my posts will know that I regularly champion the cause of the humble and oft-despised rat. Having worked with them in laboratories, and now with our family having pet rats, I´ve quite come to love these gentle and misunderstood rodents, and have long adjured that rats were not the primary vector of plague-carrying fleas: Had rodents written the history books, they would certainly bemoan how humans had spread the plague to ratkind throughout medieval Europe.

According to the article, tere was no study, just a researcher´s conjecture.

I´m sticking with the rat flea theory since we can see how destructive they are today...

I should add that I also think fleas were the primary manner by which Y. pestis was spread. However, I´ve always doubted that the fleas were moved about by rats because R. rattus and R. Norvegicus are territorial animals that rarely travel more than a couple hundred meters from where they´re born. I think it much more likely that man and his domestic animals would have been considerably more effective in transporting fleas from village to village.

It was spread by community organizers, the deadliest type of rat.

OP, I´m guessing that neither your lab rats nor your pet rats had/have fleas.

I don´t know how this researcher can conjecture that since, what, he assumes, is the same strain of the virus, killed so many fewer people recently than it did 500 years ago, therefore it wasn´t the same.

500 years is a long time for humanity to develop more immunity.

I too, like OP, admire rats. They´ve been and still are poisoned, trapped, glued, etc. and they still thrive. I would say that as a non-scientist that the general living conditions back then probably contributed to the spread.

In the case of the great pestilence, it was an organism known as Yersinia pestis that caused so many deaths. We know this from multiple historical accounts of the disease process and the organism has been identified in the remains of Plague victims. Bubonic is the most common form followed by septicemic and pneumonic forms. So to say bubonic plague wasn´t the cause and pneumonic plague was the cause is simply saying a different form of the same disease was the primary killer. What we know is pneumonic plague (Oh, the nursery rhyme ´Ring around the Rosie´ is an all encompassing description of both bubonic and pneumonic plague) is 100% fatal without treatment. Bubonic is about 25% without treatment. And there was no treatment in the Middle Ages thus pneumonic is more feared. Prior to the plague, the world experienced record warming which allowed for a prolong growing season and cultivation of marginal land. The human population exploded. About a decade before the plague, global cooling with increase in wet weather set in thus vastly reducing the food supply. Decrease nutrition, increase confinement due to colder weather plays a role in the spread. Global warming equals increase life. Global cooling brings the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

The Obama administration quietly announced on Tuesday that it intends to change the way Americans learn about natural disasters and other major emergencies during radio and TV broadcasts, giving the president the ability to flip a switch and address the entire nation at once. The Emergency Alert System, the latest version of a program first established in 1951, blasts out emergency messages in the event of local weather emergencies, but can also be used to warn Americans about terror attacks and major natural disasters. In his message to the “Mexico/Holy See Colloquium on Migration and Development,” Pope Francis characterized the tens of thousands of illegal immigrants that have crossed the U.S. southern border as a product of globalization, suggesting that the phenomenon is happening worldwide. Francis proclaimed, “Despite the large influx of migrants present in all continents and in almost all countries, migration is still seen as an emergency, or as a circumstantial and sporadic fact, while instead it has now become a hallmark of our society and a challenge.” Emmer McCarthy for Vatican Radio said Francis expressed his concern for “the tens of thousands of

The First Lady of these United States has declared war on Chick-fil-A. It seems the home of plump juicy breasts and hot buttered buns has run afoul of the new Smart Snacks in School program. The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School. They’ve just learned they will no longer be allowed to buy Chick-fil-A

“Trust” is for Con Men: The reaction to the border chaos in Texas has accomplished one thing: It has exploded the lie at the heart of current “comprehensive” immigration reform plans. The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security.
